Mitsubishi Rally Team USA: Rhys Millen, with Garry Cowan, 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII. A huge 19 car Group 2 field is headlined by two works teams, featuring Eric Burmeister, with Cindy Krolikowski, 01 Mazda Protégé MP3, and Lauchlin O'Sullivan and Matt Chester, 02 Mitsubishi Lancer RMR. Keeping them on their toes in this highly competitive class will be the impressively quick Matthew Johnson (VW Golf), and James Robinson (Honda Civic) Other notables: Frank and Dan Sprongl, winners of the 2002 Sno*Drift Rally in January, 1993 Ford Escort Cosworth; Tom McGeer and Mark Williams, 2002 Subaru Impreza; rising star Mark Nelson and Charles Bradley, 2000 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI; and west coast veterans Carl Jardevall with Amity Trowbridge, 1997 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV. Additional news interest: The Maine Forest ProRally is substantially revised this year, using a number of roads new to the rally, and no 'out and back' stages, which should improve the flow of cars considerably. The wildly popular Mexico Recreational Park spectator stage, which is approximately 3 miles north of Rumford on Rt. 17, will take place again immediately following the Parc Expose. The SCCA ProRally Overall Drivers Championship points battle tightened considerably with Subaru's win at Pikes Peak, but the Hyundais, which appear to have a horsepower edge over the Subarus, are always a major factor at this rally, which historically has favored faster cars. To quote one driver that survived last years event: 'Maine Forest is too fast to drive slow, but its too rough to drive fast." Event Rank: This rally is a full points SCCA ProRally Championship event. Drivers earn points towards the national championship, and supporting manufacturers (Hyundai, Subaru, Mitsubishi, and Mazda) earn points towards overall and class Manufacturers' Championships. Press & VIP Credentials: Event Press/Photo and VIP credentials will be available at registration on Thursday evening at the Sunday River Ski Resort and Friday morning at the "Pavilion" behind the Linnell Motel only (see above for times). Access to press-only photo areas will require a Press Pass. Credentials are available only to members of the working press. Identification and/or proper work orders are required. Minors are not eligible for Press or VIP credentials. Visuals, Interviews & Media information: During the event, action photography and video will be possible from spectator and press-only viewing areas along the rally course. Drivers, co-drivers and crew will be accessible throughout the event, including the Friday afternoon Parc Expose. Due to the very large geographic footprint of this event, Media Relations will only be able to provide event results and other information via e-mail. The press room phone number will be available on event day. All three Overall Championship Manufacturers (Hyundai, Subaru and Mitsubishi) are represented along with both of the Group 2 Manufacturers (Mazda and Mitsubishi). The two-day event will be held on privately owned lumber roads of the MeadWestvaco Paper Company, International Paper Company and Seven Islands Land Company in Western Maine, near the New Hampshire border. The Rally starts Friday afternoon, 26 July at 2:00 PM EST from downtown Rumford at the thrilling Mexico Recreation Park Spectator Stage, then promptly moves North into the breathtaking Maine woods. Late Breaking News (driver/co-driver): Weather & Start Order: Much like last year's drought conditions, Maine is still very dry, and therefore first car on the road will remain a highly coveted position. Since last year, however, SCCA ProRally rules have been adjusted to help diminish that advantage somewhat, with all eight top-seeded drivers getting a 2-minute start window. In addition, the traditional Maine Forest stage-one reseeding has been eliminated by the SCCA ProRally Series Manager, Dan Coughnour, which may help curb some of the banzai driving seen last year on the very short ˝ mile special stage as the top drivers fought for a dust-free restart position. At tonight's start-order draw, Canadian champion Tom McGeer drew top honors, hopefully a good omen after his disappointing DNF last year on stage 2. Jonny Milner, one of the UK's top ranked national drivers will be making his US rallying debut this weekend in one of Subaru Rally Team USA's backup cars. Milner, who regularly drives a Toyota Corolla WRC car in the UK, (winning the Rally of Wales in May) most recently won at the Swansea Bay National Rally driving a Hyundai WRC. Milner had some engine problems in testing earlier this week, but US Prodrive Motorsport Manager Ed Bentley made it clear that the car was completely sorted by this afternoon. More British Invasion: US Group N regular Craig Peeper is swapping co-driver's for Maine. With his regular navigator Ian Bevan away with other rally commitments, Peeper selected a top-drawer replacement in Andrew Dugdale, who is fresh from a win at the Malcolm Wilson Rally in the UK. This afternoon's shakedown stage brought out a large number of entries, both for testing purposes, and also to give teams still new to stage notes a chance to try them out at speed before the rally begins tomorrow afternoon. Looking impressive at shakedown were a very confident Mark Higgins and Michael Gibson in the Hyundai Tiburon, Gibson remarking that the car was feeling very solid Contact: Kurt Spitzner - SCCA Pro Rally Championship Director Direct inquiry Email: sccaprorally@aol.com Time zone at-event: Eastern Daylight Time (GMT - 5 hours) SCCA ProRally: http://www.sccaprorally.org/ SCCA Maine Forest ProRally: http://www.maineforestrally.com Information regarding the start order list: Car # = number on vehicle. Has his luck run out? Championship leader David Higgins had a difficult first night, suffering a puncture on SS2, returning to service with his right front wheel worn down to just the hub, sparks flying, loosing two and a half minutes in the process. A victim of Higgins' misfortune was Paul Choiniere, losing some 40 seconds as he tried to slice through the thick dust left in the wake of the wounded Subaru. Jonny Milner, experiencing his first US rally is very impressed with both the roads, and the stage notes that describe them. The Briton executed a significant 'leap' over a crest on SS4, which resulted in an even more significant landing that flattened his exhaust, is otherwise very happy with his 6th place drive in his Prodrive supplied WRX, curiously running with a mere 32mm restrictor in this 40mm restrictor class. The ever growing and fiercely competitive Group N category has Tim O'Neil leading by 2 tenths of a minute over Brendan Cunningham. Not a single Group N car has retired, and the entire 12-car class has just a 2-minute spread between them. The expected Group 2 battle, despite being only 20 minutes into this rally, is shaping up to be quite a row, with Washington's Scott Fuller leading over Lauchlin O'Sullivan, who was slowed by a puncture in SS3, by just 3 tenths of a minute, with James Robinson just 2 tenths behind him. Fast action, thrilling stage roads and a schedule friendly to fans and entrants alike are traditional characteristics of the Maine Forest Rally, and this year didn't disappoint the fans or the entrants. Key Notes and Quotes: What could be described as "just driving a better rally" - Lovell and Turvey for two days simply dodged the pitfalls of rallying better than anyone else, and brought home a convincing win for Subaru. In addition, by earning maximum points, Lovell has significantly enhanced his chances for a 2nd driver's championship. Finishing nearly three minutes ahead of 2nd place challenger Tom McGeer the defending champion also posted the largest margin of victory of the 2002 SCCA ProRally season. That's not to say that Lovell's drive was not without some excitement - the right front fender required some sledgehammer adjustments at the midday service, and a hasty 17-minute transmission swap on day one went right down to the wire. Current driver's championship points leader David Higgins, blessed with four consecutive wins this season, suffered a variety of rallying cruel twists, running into an embankment on Day one, damaging his front suspension, and getting punctures early in day two, and on the last stage, the last incident wresting away from him an almost certain 2nd place finish. It nearly cost him the 3rd place podium position as well; a hard charging Paul Choiniere finishing a mere 6 seconds behind. Regardless, Higgins, while not jubilant with his finish, was ecstatic with the roads: "the stages we ran today are simply the finest rally roads I've ever ran on - positively incredible." Brother Mark Higgins was similarly hindered in the Hyundai, with punctures and rear-bumper removing exercise early in Day 2. "Miggins" was pleased with the finish, after several frustrating mechanical DNF's, the impressively quick Tiburons finishing in 4th and 5th place. Championship Driver's standings. David Higgins: 103, Lovell: 83, Mark Higgins: 66, Rhys Millen: 40, Mark Nelson: 39. MFG Standings: For the first time this year, Subaru has taken the lead away from Hyundai, now leading 92 over Hyundai's 86, and Mitsubishi's 52. Mitsubishi and the talented team of Lauchlin O'Sullivan and Matt Chester continues to expand their lead over Mazda in Group 2, handily leading that championship 100 to 68. O'Sullivan leads the Group 2 Drivers Championship as well.
