SCCA Performance Rally events follow a format similar to that used around the globe. However, most events do not allow for on-course practice (recces) or pacenotes. Competitors generally see the course for the first time as they race it. The International Cherokee Trails Rally is the first recced and pacenoted SCCA ProRally Championship event in over a decade. At-speed competition takes place only on "special stages," using demanding back roads closed by local authorities for the event. "Transits" connect the "special stage" sections together and are driven at posted speeds, with teams fully subject to all traffic laws. SCCA Performance Rally vehicles are production-based cars and trucks from manufacturers around the world. They compete both for the overall victory and wins within a class structure that groups together vehicles with similar performance capabilities. Each vehicle carries a driver and a co-driver/navigator. Using a detailed route book and a specially designed rally computer, the co-driver keeps the team on-course and advises the driver of any hazards ahead. This role is as critical as the driver's skill, since the team is traveling at full racing speeds over roads they have not seen, in any type of weather. Selected entries (driver/co-driver): 11-time SCCA ProRally Overall Driver Champion and US Rally legend John Buffum with Neil Wilson; SCCA Open Class 2000 Hyundai Tiburon 1999 SCCA ProRally Overall Driver/Co-Driver champions Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley; SCCA Open Class 2000 Hyundai Tiburon 1999 Production Class and 2000 FIA Group N Driver Champion Karl Scheible with Brian Maxwell; FIA Gr N4 2000 Subaru Impreza WRX-Sti. 1997 European Rally Champion Krzysztof Holowczyc with Macie Wiskawski FIA Gr N4 2000 Subaru Impreza WRX Sti 1999 SCCA Group 5 Champions and 2000 FIA Group N runnerups Henry and Cindi Krolikowski FIA Group N 1995 Subaru Impreza WRX-STi. The Rally starts at 9:00 AM Thursday morning, at the Tennessee Aquarium in downtown Chattanooga. Selected late entries, news The highly anticipated arrival of the first three-car team in many years will have to wait until next months Oregon Trail event. The Knight Racing independent Subaru team's transport left their trio of 2000 Impreza's stranded late yesterday, and repairs to their rig were impossible to get completed by the close of Scrutineering this afternoon. Team boss Tom Ryther stated "We are very disappointed that we will not be competing at the Cherokee Trails ProRally, as it has all the makings of a WRC event." The team's innovative Impreza's will debut at Oregon Trail with some interesting new hardware under the hoods of Ryther's and Peterson's Imprezas - the cars will have automatic transmissions, designed specifically to deal with the high torque and horsepower of their turbo-charged and intercooled 2.5 litre engines. Season and New Championship Debuts for many teams are occurring this week: at the top of the lists: Making his SCCA ProRally Championship debut is 2000 Pikes Peak stock category champion Rhys Millen, and his Mitsubishi Motor Sales America backed 2000 Lancer Evo 6.5. Returning for 2001 are George Plsek and Alex Gelsomino in a completely rebuilt Audi S2, and young British rally aces Richard Tuthill and John Bennie will make their United States debut in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV, supported by Julian Masters. Who is Masters? Was the car owner than introduced international road-racing legend Erik Comas to the world of Performance Rallying at Oregon Trail last year, finishing 4th overall at that event. Will history repeat itself? Following today's well attended press/shakedown stage, Tuthill/Bennie and the Round 1 Sno*Drift podium finishing duo of Seamus Burke and Frank Cunningham are looking like the two to watch for dark horse top podium finishes. Fast and consistent, with reliable chariots, both teams bring well-honed international level rallying skills to this event. Tuthill is an unknown here - but has an impressive win sheet back in the UK, and Burke has been a man on a mission over the last season, with a steadily improving finish history, and regular equipment upgrades. Luckless Noel Lawler suffered yet another setback yesterday - pre-event equipment checks revealed a leaking head gasket and a warped head on his freshly rebuilt and just run-in Hyundai Tiburon engine - and a service crew frantically scrambling to rebuild the top end before the close of Scrutineering tonight. The back-up plan: well-placed but un-confirmed pit-lane rumors indicate that Lawler will start in team boss John Buffum's Tiburon should Lawler's motor not be up to snuff at daybreak. Weather forecast: The forecast for this weeks 3-day rally: something reminiscent of last weeks Rally Portugal - soggy weather with thunderstorms likely tomorrow, then easing off to partly cloudy conditions for the balance of the event. Highs tomorrow around 62f/17c, with similar temps for Friday and Saturday. ProRallysm Championship - Round 2 - Cherokee Trails Day One Results and News UK's Tuthill leads - Buffum in pursuit Chattanooga, TN, The first ever International Cherokee Trails Rally got off to a roaring start today under a soaking sky, with top drivers and manufacturers setting a fierce pace immediatelyb& Richard Tuthill proved his mettle early on, methodically building what would end up as a greater than one-minute lead in his SCCA ProRally debut event over the course of the day. Setting a scorching pace in the early morning rain, the gradually drying conditions worked well for the young UK driver. Rhys Millen's SCCA ProRally debut had a bit of a setback, with gearbox problems slowing the 2000 Pikes Peak Hillclimb champion start early in SS2. Unable to effect repairs, the team soldiered on through the balance of the day, with repairs to be made tonite. Expect Millen to make a charge for the front early on in Day 2. Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley's bad luck finally turned around mere minutes before the close of scrutineering last nite, with their Hyundai Tiburon up and running with a frantically rebuilt motor top-end. While still experiencing some minor overheating problems when running at full sustained throttle, the 1999 SCCA ProRally Champions are sitting in a comfortable 4th place overall at the end of day ones activities. Karl Scheible, the 2000 SCCA ProRally Gr N Champion, and now Prodrive Subaru driver sits 7th overall, and is in command of the Group N category. That may not last however, as his Impreza' motor seized as he pulled into the final service. Experiencing overheating problems from SS2 on, the short service times between stages precluded the team from effecting repairs during the event Seamus Burke and Frank Cunningham are showing good pace, and are in 5th overall position at the days close. Using a rented Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI shell, and the mechanicals of their not yet finished Evo VI, the duo has never been quicker. In the SCCA classes, a variety of stories are being written. Brian Vinson, who debuted his ex-Ralph Kosmides G5 championship winning Toyota Supra turbo at Sno*Drift last month, had, unfortunately, had another short day, with the car shedding yet another accessory belt drive. Andrew Havas now leads Gr5, with Bryan Hourt's supercharged Honda Civic in close pursuit. The 1999 Production class championship winning and TV Commercial favorite VW New Beetle has returned to SCCA ProRally Championship action, with new teammates Michael Halley and Joshua Bressem getting settled in, holding onto 2nd place in class behind Jeff Field and Ole Holter. The Group 2 "Spec-Car" battle is between Richard and Brian Pilczuk's VW Golf and the VW Golf of Eric Burmeister/Mark Buskirk Day two of the International Cherokee Trails Rally begins tomorrow at 8:00 AM from the Cricket Pavilion in downtown Chattanooga, which has already been acclaimed by several service crews as the finest service facility in the nation. Heading back into the high Tennessee Smoky Mountain woods, 5 more technically challenging stages will be completed by nightfall. The Weather Forecast calls for gradually clearing skies and moderate temperatures. This should begin to dry out the damp roads in the sunny spots, making tire choice for tomorrow particularly critical. ProRallysm Championship - Round 2 - Cherokee Trails Day Two Results and News Buffum, Tuthill battle it out Chattanooga, TN: The second day of competition at the International Cherokee Trails Rally brought rapid-fire surprise retirements and field reshufflings, but through it all Mitsubishi pilot Tuthill and USA Rally legend and Hyundai team boss Buffum remained the forces to be reckoned with. Prodrive Troubles: Early into the days activities, both Prodrive entries suffered terminal mechanical problems that eliminated both cars from the rally. Early into SS7, Scheible's Impreza suffered from a blown head gasket - an end result of intermittent overheating heating problem that began early in Day 1. Later, in the same stage, Lovell's Impreza was sidelined with terminal transmission problems. His service crew was aware of the problem, and was prepared to complete the transmission swap during the 20-minute service scheduled immediately following the stage, but Lovell was unable to drive the car back under its own power. Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley's round of good luck on Day One on SS8 while the duo were in second place nipping at Tuthill's heels when the Irishmen had an off which left the car stuck and unable to continue. Also on the surprise retirement list is Rhys Millen, who failed to restart today. The transmission problems he was dealing with in Day 1 were terminal, and spares couldn't be located to effect repairs. With a keen eye to repeating or improving on their January podium finish at the Sno*Drift event, Seamus Burke and Frank Cunningham are in a solid 3rd overall position with a ten minute lead over the nearest class competitors Tim Patterson and Scott Ferguson. The mechanical attrition of this event, while being a misfortune for some, has moved several independent teams into the top-ranking limelight, many for their first time. The car 116 team of Thomas Lawless and Brian Sharkey, who purchased Burke's 97 Evo IV at the Sno*Drift awards banquet in January have wasted no time as establishing themselves as players in the FIA Group N category, currently leading the class and placed fourth in overall competition. Richard Tuthill,. Whose performance at his debut US event has impressed all, was clearly pleased with his driving, was also mindful that the competition was very real. "At every stage today, I would wait at the finish to get an idea of my competitor's timesb&I never had to wait longb&everyone seemed to be right thereb&Lawler, and now Buffum, are giving me quite the run." The California based team of Lauchlin O'Sullivan and John Dillon are doing well in their first event of the season, steadily drawing out a twelve minute lead over East Coast favorites Gail Truess and Pattie Hughes-Mayer. O'Sullivan is also currently seventh overall. After finishing a distant second place in Group 5 in Day 1, Bryan Hourt has gained significant time on class leader Andrew Havas and is now in striking distance of taking the Gr5 lead going into Day 3. In Group 2, a10-minute window reminiscent of Sno*Drift in January has appeared - only this time its Eric Burmeister at the far end of the time stick. The local to Chattanooga team of Randy Bailey and Will Perry are showing some 'home town advantage' on these Tennessee back roads, stretching out a comfortable lead. There are many internationally based members of the global performance rally community that have flown to Chattanooga to observe the first SCCA international event in thirteen years, and all have come away impressed with the overall quality of the venue. Said one: "Discussions with several drivers have told me that the roads here are as good as any found in the world and that Chattanooga makes for an excellent host city." Included in the overseas contingent is an observer from Mitsubishi Ralliart/Spain - who arrived at the event today with a new awards program for US based driver's of the company's Lancer Evo series of performance rally cars. The Final Day of the Int. Cherokee Trails Rally begins at 8 am and will run a shorter schedule than the first two, with rally activity wrapping up at approximately 4:30 pm, with a podium finish in downtown Chattanooga. ProRallysm Championship - Round 2 - Cherokee Trails Tuthill Wins First SCCA International Rally in 13 Years Chattanooga TN: Richard Tuthill has overnight become the man to beat in SCCA ProRally. Driving a mature, well-calculated event that saw the vast majority of his challengers fall by the wayside trying to keep up, the young gentleman from the UK steadily expanded his lead each day, building a comfortable, yet never overwhelming, buffer over his nearest rivals in John Buffum and Seamus Burke. The event started to resemble an episode of 'Survivor' rather than a SCCA ProRally as more and more teams were 'voted off the island' through mechanical failures or mis-judgement of road conditions, leaving several cars daily high-centered on the berms or stuck in the ditches of the logging trails. Only 23 of the 61 starting ProRally entries were running at the finish. Other than Thursday morning's rain, the weather was not a major factor, with cool mountain temperatures and partly cloudy skies keeping dust minimal and the technically challenging roads fast and smooth. The International Cherokee Trails Rally is the SCCA's first 'toe in the water' as the Club prepares to bid for a future round of the FIA's World Rally Championship. With over 800 miles in the route book, including 180 miles of special stages, vehicle endurance, adapting to and successfully using pacenotes, and finding an race survivable, yet competitive team cadence were the real challenges - a tall order for many US based rallyists who aren't familiar with performance rallying on this grand scale. The internationally based or experienced entries in the event drove the point home, as did the handful of gritty American teams that survived this test - but also set an enviable yet attainable example for all in attendance to aspire to in the coming months. John Buffum: recognizing Hyundai Motor America CEO Finbarr O'Neill, and several other industry dignitaries in the audience, including Subaru R&D President Tatsuo Sakai, asked all those in attendance to 'recognize the change in the sport,' and work together to further the growth of SCCA ProRally, 'as the manufacturers who are investing in it already are.' Regarding Tuthill, the rally legend noted: "I simply couldn't catch him - a great young driver." Richard Tuthill: who publicly thanked his co-driver for keeping him on-pace and in check, and car-owner Julian Masters for the opportunity to drive in the event, was satisfied with the new venue, remarking at the awards ceremony "There is no question that in a few years, this can be the finest World Rally event in the Championship." Another young talent in the SCCA performance rally ranks, Andrew Havas secured a career best 5th overall and an easy Group 5 win when a hard-charging Bryan Hourt retired with terminal mechanical problems in the days first special stage. Lauchlin O'Sullivan made a triumphant return to the SCCA ProRally Championship after taking nearly a year off, with a solid 7th place finish overall, and a first in PGT. In Production, a Michael Halley constructed Dodge Shadow, driven by Jeff Field, beat a Michael Halley driven VW New Beetle, and a new Ford Focus, driven by SCCA ProRally newcomer Craig Peeper, in the tightest competition of the event, the trio separated by barely 7 minutes over the course of 3 days. The 'home team' of Randy Bailey and Will Perry from nearby Soddy Daisy, TN, made a solid charge up the leaderboard to take their first Group 2 win in their first SCCA ProRally event with an inspired drive that kept the fans happy and their competition busy. Their immaculately prepared 1988 Isuzu Impulse made for a curious rally car choice, but the team and the car got the job done, with a commanding 11 minute window over 2nd place Eric Burmeister and Mark Buskirk. The window might not have been so wide were it not for a broken steering rack knuckle on the VW Golf - which took some 15 minutes on-stage to repair according to a resourceful Burmeister, "with a large rock." For the first time in their SCCA ProRally careers Seamus Burke and Frank Cunningham lead (unofficially) the overall driver's and co-drivers championships with 28 points each. Tuthill and Paul Choiniere are tied at 22, and Buffum and Mark Lovell are tied at 17 a piece. Despite Tuthill's convincing drive, Hyundai will maintain its early season Manufacturers Championship lead by virtue of Tuthill's 1997 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV being ineligible for SCCA MFG Council points. Burke, finishing 3rd and driving a 2000 Evo VI, generated the points for the company. Henry Krolikowski, in the top finishing Subaru, brought home 3rd place overall points, and 1st place Group N points for the company. The Manufacturers Championship standings (unofficially) are now: Hyundai: 40, with Subaru and Mitsubishi tied at 27 points each. Round 3 of the SCCA ProRally Championship is the Oregon Trail Rally in Tillamook, Oregon, located along the state's spectacular northern shoreline. The event is scheduled for the weekend of April 7-8. Television coverage of the SCCA ProRally Championship starts its 2001 season this Monday night at 8:00 PM and Midnight Eastern time on Speedvision, with the broadcast of Round 1: Sno*Drift.
