Little Creek Casino Pacific Forest PRO Rally
Shelton, Washington
Round #11 - 1996 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series
Press Notes #1
November 9, 1996 - 9:00 AM

1. Welcome to a sunny, but chilly Northwest - about 70 miles
southwest of Seattle, Washington - for the Little Creek
Casino Pacific Forest PRO Rally. This is the final event
of the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series, with the awards
banquet being held only hours after the finish of the
event tonight at the Little Creek Casino.

2. Some pre-rally notes (we are behind, so these will be
    shorter than usual):

--The Little Creek Casino is not only sponsoring the
event, but the year-end banquet as well.

--Year-end banquet guests include SCCA Chairperson of the
Board Marge Binks, SCCA Area 1 Director Bill Bradshaw,
SCCA Rally/Solo series manager Howard Duncan, SCCA
series administrator Paige Wagner, and Michelin racing
      tire manager Jerry Rinaldo.

--The only driver's championship still up for grabs is
the Production Class title, with the Jim
Anderson/Martin Dapot Honda Prelude trying to catch the
Lon Peterson/Bill Gutzmann Kia Sephia. If Peterson
finishes, he clinches the manufacturers title for Kia,
but he can only win the driver's title if Anderson
      DNFs.

--The overall co-driver race is still being contested
with Jeff Becker returning to the wars with Paul
Choiniere after missing several rallies with a bad
back. Becker must catch Yorgi Bittner, co-driver for
Selcuk Karamanoglu, who has forged into the lead with
Selcuk's top finishes during the last several events.

3. 48 entries (20 national and 28 divisional), the largest
field here in recent years, started from the Little Creek
Casino in Shelton and headed into the Simpson Timber
Company forests nearby on Friday night. The rally, 294
miles in length with 14 stages and 132 stage miles, also
encompasses the national divisional runoffs - won last
year by Janice Damitio/Amity Trowbridge in their Toyota
Celica GT4. For the first time in memory, five FIA seed
drivers (Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker Hyundai Elantra,
Henry Joy/Michael Fennell Mitsubishi Lancer, Frank
    Sprongl/Dan Sprongl Audi Quattro S-2, Carl Merrill/Lance
Smith Ford Escort Csoworth, and Selcuk Karamanoglu/Yorgi
Bittner Eagle Talon) started the event.

4. The event has also been boosted by the fact that this is
the national runoffs for the divisional rally series,
with Janice Damitio/Amity Trowbridge trying to defend
their title earned last year in Texas in their Toyota
    Celica GT4.

   5. Here's the poop on the Terry Bassett replacement in Rally/Solo at
SCCA - note the new person is also on CompuServe.

From: Dennis Dean, 71601,1313

CONTACT: SCCA, (303)-694-7222
OCTOBER 31, 1996

DEAN NAMED VICE PRESIDENT, CLUB RACING-RALLY/SOLO

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. _ Capt. Dennis Dean, a 19-year SCCA member and a retiring
naval officer, has been named the SCCA's Vice President, Club
Racing-Rally/Solo, effective December 9, announced SCCA
President Nicholas W. Craw.
In his new appointment, Dean will oversee the SCCA's massive Club Racing
program, which features 8,000 licensed participants competing in 300
amateur road racing events conducted at the regional and national levels.
He'll also oversee the club's vast Rally/Solo Division, which offers the
SCCA membership a variety of programs, including Solo I, Solo II, Pro Solo,
PRO Rally and Road Rallies.
"Dennis has the leadership and inter-personal skills critical to an
organization such as the SCCA," said Craw. "He has demonstrated his
leadership skills as a commander in the U.S. Navy, which will serve him
well in leading our Club Racing and Rally/Solo programs."
Dean, 49, joins the SCCA senior management team following a 30-year
career in the Navy, which culminated in his appointment as the Captain of
the USS Chosin, a 400-crew guided-missile cruiser stationed in Pearl
Harbor. Dean transfers his command of the ship December 6.
"Dean skippered one of our finest missile cruisers and was stationed in
Hawaii," said Craw. "To give that up to work at the SCCA means one of two
things. He either has rocks in his head or has a deep affection for SCCA
and is highly committed to the club's continued success."
"The club has been a love of mine since joining in 1978 _ solid ground
under foot sounded good after 30 years at sea," said Dean.
An SCCA member since 1978 (San Francisco Region), Dean was one of the
club's finest chief scrutineers, serving as head of tech in four divisions
of the SCCA as his Navy duties moved him from base to base. Dean also
served as the National Administrator of Scrutineers from 1988 to 1993.
Dean joined the Navy as an enlisted man, first serving as a deck seaman
on an ocean-going tugboat. He rose through the ranks quickly, earning Petty
Officer First Class rank in less than six years. Dean was then selected for
the Navy's Officer Training Program, resulting in his gaining not only an
engineering degree from Purdue but his Navy commission.
Dean's 30-year Navy career included a three-year stint at the Pentagon.
One of his career highlights was serving in the Red Sea during Desert
Storm, in command of the destroyer USS William
V. Pratt.

   6. From the current issue of AUTOSPORT:

ECCLESTONE READY TO PUSH TV RALLYING

Bernie Ecclestone is poised to use the demise of the International Touring
Car Championship as the springboard to push World Championship rallying
onto the television screen, possibly as early as next season.

The ITC has been shown in a limited form this season, but was to be
expanded next year as part of the ITV motorsport package, led by its
Formula 1 coverage poached earlier the year from the BBC.

But Ecclestone who has control of motorsport promotion on behalf of the
governing body, the FIA, is demanding that rallying embrace's this
opportunity by adjusting its format to be more television friendly.

"I hope upon hope that rallying will concentrate more on superspecials" he
said last week. "You should have less importance attached to people
charging around in the bloody woods and more on the superspecials."

Ecclestone is not, however insisting that the traditional aspect of
rallying be erased forever. "I don't mean you have to get rid of the stuff
in the woods," he continued. "Rallying is always going to what it is. You
can keep the two elements, but you must change the emphasis and keep it
more television friendly that way."

Ecclestone's support for a revised format of events should guarantee that
the idea of a points deciding superspecial at the end of each event will be
part of the championship structure by 1998.

"Bernie has to prove himself on rallying" said Subaru boss David
Richards on Monday. "He said 18 months ago that ITC was his flagship!
Rallying has all the potential, but has not enjoyed the promotion. But now
the FIA only has F1 and rallying, so the rally championship
should get a big push in terms of format and television coverage."
Richards concluded: "Many events will need to rethink their attitudes and
we'll lose a lot of dead wood."

 8.  The Sprongl's DNF has nothing to do with their fast Audi Quattro S-2;
co-driver Dan Sprongl was sick during the first two stages, and was
forced to retire from the entry. Fellow Canadian co-driver John
Bellefleur, who was Carl Merrill's co-driver through most of the
season, stepped in so Frank could keep running, but the rules prohibit
the entry from scoring points or getting a finishing position in the
     final results.

 9. The Henry Joy/Michael Fennell DNF, which occurred on stage #5, resulted
from a missed turn in the very foggy last stage on Friday night.
Although the car was not badly damaged, they were unable to get back on
     the road on time.

 10. The Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker Hyundai Elantra came in on a rope after
the conclusion of the Friday night activities (after stage #5) with a
blown clutch. The Sam Bryan/Rob Walden Saab pulled them the 15 miles
from the end of the stage to the Little Creek Casino. Although leading
the rally by more than two minutes, Choiniere's fate might rest with a
protest committee which will determine whether he receives a ten minute
penalty for working on the car in the control zone (no penalty will be
considered unless a protest is filed). The team replaced the clutch
overnight, and Choiniere started with the rest of the pack this
morning. Co-driver Jeff Becker, running his first U.S. rally since his
back injury, reports that he feels okay, but his back hurts getting out
of the car to get scores.

 11. The battle between the Jim Anderson/Martin Dapot Honda Prelude
and the Lon Peterson/Bill Gutzmann Kia Sephia is going great guns,
with both teams having their problems. Peterson would have led after
five stages, but speeding on a transit (and being caught by the
organizer's radar gun in an "O" control) cost him 2:30, and he now
trails Anderson by more than two minutes. Anderson had initially
fallen behind due to a broken electrical connector, and reported that
he was dragging his skidplate on many sections of each stage.

  12. In Group 5, the Saab 900 of Sam Bryan/Rob Walden, looking for their
first finish of the season, has grabbed a two-minute lead over
the Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes Toyota Supra despite losing a turbo hose
during the first two stages. Ralph just wants to stay ahead of the
two Dodges, however, in order to clinch the manufacturers championship
for Toyota. The Supra was running well despite some minor brake
problems which lead to bleeding the brakes after stage #2. After five
stages, Kosmides lead the Dave Clark/Ben Greisler Dodge Omni by more
than five minutes, with the Lesley Suddard/Anne Thomas Dodge Charger
      another minute behind.

  13. Other Friday night reports:

--The George Plsek/Mark Ratham Saab 99 suffered a flat tire on stage
#2, losing time to the field as he ran on the flat for five miles.

--The Gerry Valentini/Lee Sorenson Mazda RX-7 lost bolts that held on
the exhaust, nearly losing the entire exhaust system on stage #2.

--The Rui Brasil/Carlos Tavares Audi Quattro, currently in fourth
        place, was having overheating problems.

--The Rick Beson/Mike Fenter 4WD Mazda Protoge, in its first national
of the year, was having minor electrical problems, but, according to
Beson, was only suffering from "rusty driver syndrome."

--The John Forespring/Chris Forespring "Fat Ford" Mustang had an
electrical fire and went off the road while trying to diagnose its
        source.

15. The Guy Light/David White VW GTI (built by Light, owned and usually
driven by White, but driven this weekend by Light), broke a ball joint
on stage #8 and was forced to retire.

16. The big change in the standings after stage #8 was the turn of bad luck
for Selcuk Karamanoglu and Yorgi Bittner in their Eagle Talon. Selcuk
went off the road on stage #8, losing 12 minutes to the field. The car
is also reported to be leaking transmission fluid and losing fourth
gear, putting this year's Production GT champ in a tough spot to hold
off Carl Merrill in the battle for the second overall position in the
     final point standings.

16. The 1997 Little Creek Casino Pacific Forest PRO Rally is now
over, and a rules violation as the result of a blown clutch has meant
a surprise winner. The Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker Hyundai Elantra,
which took the national championship for manufacturers, the driver's
championship, and the co-driver's title, could not secure the event
win as it incurred a ten minute penalty for working on the car in a
control zone (official's area) at the end of Friday night's
     activities.

Choiniere, who lost his clutch at the end of stage #5, lifted his hood
to inspect the car in an area where no work is allowed on the car. A
protest committee upheld an inquiry filed by several drivers, and
Choiniere dropped to second place with the 10-minute penalty. This
allowed the Carl Merrill/Lance Smith Ford Escort Cosworth, which had
finished 4:50 behind, to capture the event title. For Merrill, it was
his second win here, after beating the field in April.

18. A couple of the DNF details:

--The Lesley Suddard/Anne Thomas Dodge Charger lost its clutch
pulling Karamanoglu out of the mud.

--The Dave Clark/Ben Greisler Dodge Omni lost its motor on stage
       #6.

19. Other class winners included the Janice Damitio/Amity Trowbridge
Toyota Celica GT4 (Production GT); the Sam Bryan/Rob Walden Saab 900
(Group 5); and the Jim Anderson/Martin Dapot Honda Prelude VTEC
(Production). For the title that were still up for grabs, Anderson
wins the Production class driver's championship while Lon Peterson's
second-place in Production clinches the manufacturers award for Kia.
Ralph Kosmides' second place finish clinches the manufacturer's title
for Toyota in Group 5, while the other manufacturer's awards go to
Jeep-Eagle (Production GT), Nissan (Group 2), and, of course, Hyundai
     for overall.

20. Year-end national champions are as follows:

Paul Choiniere - driver; Jeff Becker - co-driver; - OVERALL
     Henry Krolikowski - driver; Cindy Krolikowski - co-driver; - GROUP 5
     Mike Whitman - driver; Paula Gibeault - co-driver; - GROUP 2

21. Jerry Rinaldo of Michelin North America announced at the awards
ceremony that the world's second largest tire company has renewed its
sponsorship agreement with SCCA for three more years - through the 1999
season. The series will now be known as the Michelin PRO Rally, an
SCCA series. There will be 11 events on the schedule, inclduing eight
national and two 60 percent events, with the first rally in Atlanta,
Michigan on February 8. A detailed schedule will be released shortly.
Also back for three more years is series media liaison Andy Schupack,
now an employee of Kermish-Geylin Public Relations, Inc., a New York
PR firm, and series video shooter Glen Mazzone of Mazz-one Motorsports.

22. In the confusion following a very long awards ceremony, the awarding of
the Woodner Cup was left off the program. The award, named after Jon
Woodner, an SCCA rallyist in the 70's and '80's whose spirit embodied
sportsmanship and competition, goes to the top-finishing two-wheel-
drive car in the overall season series. This year, the award goes to
Mike Whitman, whose vintage Datsun 510 won six national events enroute
     to a national championship.
