DENVER, Colorado Sixth round (of ten) for the 2002 season. A select group of 
18 SCCA and FIA Performance Rally cars from across North America and drivers 
from around the World will compete as a championship group for the very first 
time at the 80th running of "The Peak." The SCCA ProRally Championship is 
presented by Hyundai Motor America, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, and 
Subaru of America.

Event Rank:
This hillclimb is a full points SCCA ProRally Manufacturers Championship event 
for Open Class Manufacturer (Hyundai, Subaru and Mitsubishi) teams. This first-time 
appearance of the SCCA ProRally Championship at Pikes Peak is a non-points round 
for Drivers and Co-Drivers.

Additional news interest:
Pikes Peak historical records indicate that no driver from England has ever won here - in any class. 
With two championship leading UK based teams, one from Subaru, and one from Hyundai, both in top form, 
if either wins here, it will be major history making back home.
 
Both Hyundai and Mitsubishi have considerable experience at the Peak - but have never had to run under 
SCCA ProRally rules while at the peak, yet Subaru, with partner Prodrive, with its huge global rallying 
background, has no major Hillclimb experience at all, which may make for some interesting competition 
amongst the works teams. 

High on all teams challenges is the Championship's requirement that all rally cars run on street-legal 
unleaded fuel with functional catalytic converters - a rule that has kept the race engineers up a lot of 
sleepless nights as they learn to cope with the high altitudes. 

Co-drivers are an essential part of rallying, and for the SCCA ProRally Championship, this event is no 
exception. Conversely, practice runs are banned at SCCA ProRally events, so at Pikes Peak, teams are 
allowed to "recce & pacenote" in street cars, at posted speed limits, the Pikes Peak Highway pre-event. 
Each team will have one, brief look at the mountain at speed on Friday morning, and that's it.

Event Press/Photo and VIP credentials are issued exclusively by PPIHC - not the SCCA, and will be available 
at registration on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Access to press-only photo areas will require a 
Press Pass. Credentials are available only to members of the working press. Identification and/or proper 
work orders are required.

Action photography will be possible from spectator and press-only viewing areas along the course. Drivers, 
co-drivers and crew are accessible throughout the event, including the Thursday Scrutineering session, the 
Friday testing session mid-point (at Glen Cove), and the service area adjacent to the start line on Saturday.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo Seventeen SCCA ProRally teams rolled through this 
mornings Scrutineering session, in preparation for their one shot at the 
'worlds greatest special stage' a term coined by overall record holder 
Rod Millen, that so aptly describes the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. 
Drivers, co-drivers and crew have been acclimating themselves to the high 
altitudes for several days now, and are all looking forward to tomorrows 
early morning practice sessions that will give them their first taste of 
the peak at speed.

Late Breaking News:

Weather: At 14,000 feet, the weather is anything but predictable, and the 
fires that have consumed hundreds of thousands of acres of standing timber in 
the nearby Pikes National Forest have created an uncharacteristic haze that 
surrounds much of the mountain, and the host city of Colorado Springs. The 
fire-fighters have had good luck in the area over the last several days, and 
much of the huge Hayman fire is now contained, and poses no threat to the 
operations of the Hillclimb. 

This first time participation at the Peak as a Championship round for SCCA ProRally, 
while awarding no points to the drivers, is, however a full points event for the 
Manufacturers - and all three, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Subaru, are all working 
overtime to put their cars on the summit fastest. With just one shot at the 
12.5 mile stage, but with maximum points up for grabs, Saturday morning's 
Race to the Clouds will be quite the shootout. 

An early retirement has struck the Knight racing team, which had three cars entered. 
The #49 entry of Jonathan Ryther/Roger Loeffers was withdrawn late yesterday due to 
what Ryther described as a shortage of time - "my car had all new motor, turbo and 
engine management - we had it all together, but just ran out of time to get it all 
working as well as we wanted - so we concentrated on the other two cars, to make sure 
they were right for the Peak." The Knight Racing team's two remaining cars, the #49 
car of Lon Peterson and John Elkin, and the #259 car of Scott and Robert Trinder 
successfully made it through what may be the worlds highest Scrutineering session 
(9,000 ft) - at the nearly dry Crystal Reservoir, a dramatic reminder of the extreme 
drought this part of the country is experiencing. 

Tire choice is always critical at Pikes Peak, and this years additional paved surfaces 
have a lot of teams - both in the SCCA ProRally division, and others, pondering a 
variety of ideas. Hyundai Rally Team USA - fielding two Open class cars, are trying 
two different setups for testing tomorrow - Mark Higgins will be using 'conventional' 
rally tires, and Paul Choiniere will be using a set of European rallycross tires - 
designed for use on both tarmac and gravel. With nearly identical cars, the results 
could be dramatic - or barely significant at all.

Information regarding the start order list:
Car # = number on vehicle. Class = Open or FIA Gr N - while stock appearing on the outside, 
using current bodyshells, SCCA Open class cars have considerable modifications to their 
running gear, and feature highly tuned 4-cylinder turbocharged engines and all-wheel-drive. 
Minimum weight is 2700 pounds. FIA Group N cars also feature all-wheel-drive and turbocharged 
4-cylinder motors, but are much closer to street cars that you can buy - all bodywork must 
remain stock, and engine modifications are very restricted.

Informational Times & Testing News

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - At 5:30 AM this morning all seventeen SCCA ProRally 
teams started their first ever test session at Pikes Peak, in the crisp, cool 
and very thin air that surrounds this huge mountain. Each team was allotted 
one at-speed run from the start line at 9000 feet through Glen Cove at 11,500 
feet, then up to three tests from Cove Creek at 12,000 feet to the 14,400 foot summit.

Mitsubishi: 
Lauchlin O'Sullivan and co-driver Matt Chester arrived at the Cove Creek service 
sans rear bumper - knocking it off early in their first run from the start line. 
"it was a light tap; really!" said O'Sullivan - "we didn't expect it to come off.
" Sure enough, a Hillclimb worker retrieved the bumper, delivering it back to the 
team virtually unscathed. 2001 HPSS class champion, and teammate Rhys Millen served 
notice to all entrants that his win last year was no fluke, posting fastest time on 
the lower portion of the course in his Lancer Evo VII. The top half of his test went 
nearly as well, and there was no evidence of the overheating problems that have 
plagued the team nearly all season. 

Hyundai: 
The pair of 2003 Tiburons have a new look for this weekend - hunkered down suspensions 
over 17 inch rims and low profile rallycross tires from the UK, indicative of the 
considerable tunability engineered into these cars. The tires, designed for changeable 
surfaces like that experienced at the Peak - from fresh tarmac to loose gravel - seemed 
to be working well, as Paul Choiniere demonstrated immediately. Teammate Mark Higgins, 
who started on conventional rally tires, switched over to the Avon's right away at the 
Cove Creek service, and was happy with the result. Unofficial times for the upper test 
session indicated that Higgins, Choiniere, Lovell and Millen were all within seconds of 
each other over several attempts, setting the stage for a fierce race tomorrow. Choiniere's 
Tiburon suffered turbo failure at the start line, and posted a slower speed than expected - 
but was replaced at service, with the car clearly back in top form for the un-timed 
Cove Creek to summit test sessions 

Subaru: 
"We've done months of investigating, testing, and just plain asking questions" remarked 
Subaru Rally Team USA Manager David Campion, "and it's all been great information - but you 
really just have no idea what it's like up here until you arrive." Regardless, all the pre-event 
preparation was paying off, as Mark Lovell and teammate Ramana Lagemann had excellent tests, 
with immediately competitive times for the rookie team. That was until Lagemann and co-driver 
Michael Kidd had a miscue coming out of the aptly named "Ragged Edge" turn at 12,000 feet - 
luridly sliding the car, finally stopping it with a nearly 2000 foot drop-off underneath the 
front half of the car. Co-driver Kidd hopped out immediately, and grabbed onto the rear bumper, 
along with 6 photographers that caught it all on film. "It was going over - no question" exclaimed 
one excited photographer - we could feel it pulling away - the tow truck got here just in time." 
Driver, co-driver and car are just fine - although Lagemann's test was done for the day.
 
The Independents: 
Without the budgets of the works teams, the independents that fill out the majority of the 17 car 
field have to work creatively and efficiently - as while keeping an eye on the factory teams for 
any tidbits of information that might be spotted - such as Hyundai's and Mitsubishis switch to 
tires that favor mixed surfaces over gravel only tires. Leading the pack is Doug Havir in his 
one-event old Prodrive-built WRX, followed closely by PPIHC and SCCA ProRally veteran Lon Peterson 
in the innovative, turbocharged and automatic tranmissioned Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. George Plsek 
debuted his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI to good effect making only minor adjustments, while Canadian 
Scott Trinder was battling both transmission and turbo boost problems - but was very confident 
that all his problems are curable before tomorrows session - "we may be slowest - but we still 
made it to the summit!" 

In Group N, very close competition was the rule, with Steamboat Springs CO natives Mark Cox and 
Jim Gill leading the way in their Lancer Evo VI, with AV Sports Peter Workum very close on their 
heels. In the lower course times, only 15 seconds separated all 7 entries in Group N - some of 
the closest racing this group has had all season.

Round #6 - Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hillclimb

UK's Lovell, Subaru Victorious at Inaugural Summit Run

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo Under perfect for rallying weather conditions, the SCCA 
ProRally Championship's debut at the 80th running of the Pikes Peak International 
Hillclimb demonstrated to all in attendance the fiercely close competition between 
both independent entries and manufacturer supported teams that has become a 
hallmark of the nearly 30 year old rallying series.
 
Subaru's Mark Lovell, the 2001 SCCA ProRally Driver's and Manufacturer's Champion, 
along with co-driver Steve Turvey made history today, setting a blistering pace of 
11 minutes and 52 seconds up the 150 turn, 12 and a half mile gravel and tarmac 
highway. Lovell and Turvey became not only the first ever SCCA ProRally Overall 
winners at Pikes Peak, but also the first British citizens to win at this 
extraordinary event.

Hyundai: With a margin of just 19 seconds, Subaru's win was just and hard-earned - 
but was also the recipient of some Pikes Peak Luck. Paul Choiniere, with several 
winning years of experience at the Peak with John Buffum's Libra Racing team, was 
favored by many over the 'rookie' team of Subaru's Prodrive, but had a puncture 
to the left front tire just two miles into the stage. Driving one of the most 
committed rides of his career, Choiniere, with Hillclimb veteran co-driver 
Cindy Krolikowski blasted up the mountain in his hobbled Tiburon in just over 12 
minutes, stunning the crowds that lined the mountain from top to bottom. 
Teammates Mark Higgins and Michael Gibson also suffered from the cruel turns, 
posting the only retirement of the SCCA ProRally division with terminal power 
steering failure, coating their windshield with fluid, as they approached the 
three quarter mark up the hill.
 
Mitsubishi: Lauchlin O'Sullivan and co-driver Matt Chester posted the upset of 
the Open Class with a third place finish, 13 seconds behind Choiniere and a paper 
thin 8 hundredths of a second ahead of Ramana Lagemann's Subaru, and less than 
6 seconds ahead of lead-driver and team boss Rhys Millen. Millen, chasing 
developmental problems on his all-new Lancer Evo VII much the way Hyundai was 
chasing problems with their new Tiburons several months ago, stalled twice at 
the start line, an omen that the 2001 Pikes Peak HP Showroom Stock champion wasn't 
able to overcome. 

Subaru: The months of testing, questioning and preparing paid off for Subaru and 
Prodrive, delivering the team with their first top podium position of the 2002 
season in the most dramatic way. Lovell delivered a flawless drive to the summit, 
with teammates Ramana Lagemann and Michael Kidd, recovered from their hair-raising 
"visit to the edge" in yesterday's test also drove a nearly perfect run, keeping 
fans on their feet and the live radio announcers nearly speechless. 

The Independents: 
Doug Havir, with Scott Putnam finished only 11 seconds out of the 'twelve's' in 
their brilliant yellow Subaru WRX, and 19 and 21 seconds ahead of fellow independents 
Lon Peterson and George Plesk. Only Scott and Robert Trinder, beleaguered by 
ongoing transmission woes were out of the hunt, soldiering to the summit in just 
over 15 minutes, with just 3rd gear to get them their. "Giving up wasn't an option" 
said the young Scott, "we still feel like winners" 

In Group N, the exceptionally close test times posted yesterday were precisely 
indicative of the close racing today. After 12 miles on the most exhilarating 
rally road in the USA, only 37 seconds separated the class winner from the final 
7th place finisher.  2002 season and Pikes Peak rookie Wolfgang Hoeck, originally 
from Austria, with Julie Lin posted the Group N record at 13:31.51, two seconds 
ahead of Tim O'Neil and Ole Holter. Using skills both from his rallying background 
in Austria, and from his several successful seasons in the SCCA ProSolo (autocross) 
Championship, Hoeck flew his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII up the highway in fine form. 
As were several other teams, Hoeck's crew kept an keen eye on the ever changing road 
conditions that are a hallmark of racing at Pikes Peak, and swapped tires several 
times in the morning from tarmac to gravel and back to tarmac tires again at the 
last minute. Their tire choice was a wise one, with much needed heavy rains the 
night before sweeping much of the loose 'marbles' off the road, and providing a 
grippy surface for all. 

Notes:
Subaru's first place win at this full-points round of the SCCA Manufacturers Championship 
has moved them within striking distance of points leaders Hyundai, which leads 76 to 72 
as the series heads back east for Round 7, the Maine Forest Rally in three weeks. The 
third place finish for Mitsubishi has also aided their points position, now at 49.

Saturday, August 24th at 3:00 PM (Eastern time), and re-airs on Sunday, August 25 
at 11:30 PM (Eastern)
