SCCA Performance Rally events follow a format similar to that used around the globe. At-speed competition takes place only on "special stages," using challenging roads closed by local authorities for the event. "Transits" connect the "special stage" sections together and are driven at posted speeds, with teams fully subject to all traffic laws. SCCA Performance Rally vehicles are production-based cars and trucks from manufacturers around the world. They compete both for the overall victory and wins within a class structure that groups together vehicles with similar performance capabilities. Each vehicle carries a driver and a co-driver/navigator. Using a detailed route book and a rally computer, the co-driver keeps the team on-course and advises the driver of any hazards ahead. This role is as critical as the driver's skill, since the team is traveling at speed over roads they have not seen, in any type of weather. Selected entries (driver/co-driver): 2001 Overall Driver Champion Mark Lovell with Steve Turvey, 2001 Manufacturer Champion, Open class Subaru WRX 8-time Overall Driver Champion Paul Choiniere & seven-time Co-Driver Champion Jeff Becker; Open Class Hyundai Tiburon 2001 Pikes Peak HP Showroom Stock Champion and record holder Rhys Millen with Gary Cowan, Open Class Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6.5 2000 Group 5, 2001 PGT Driver Champion Mark Utecht with Jeff Secor - FIA Gr N Subaru WRX British Rallying Champions, and brothers Mark and David Higgins will be competing directly against each other for the first time in their rally careers, Mark making his US rallying debut with Hyundai, and David in the Pirelli supported AV Sport Subaru WRX. Additional news interest: Several teams will be debuting all new sheet metal this year. Mitsubishi will debut the only works-backed Group 2 Lancer rally car in the world, with Lauchlin O'Sullivan at the wheel, and independent John Hamilton will take the wraps off his all new Production class VW Golf turbo diesel. Other new equipment unveilings include two independently entered new body Subaru WRXs, driven by 2001 Production GT Champion Mark Utecht and 2001 Production Class runner-up Craig Peeper. The Sno*Drift Rally has been re-formatted to a 2-day competition this year, but retains its popular "single service" operational layout, using the compact village of Atlanta, MI as operations headquarters, and the location of the start and all services, making this one of the most fan friendly and easiest press coverage events of the SCCA ProRally season. Event Rank: Sno*Drift is a full-points round for Driver & Manufacturer Championships in the SCCA ProRally. Interviews and Visuals: Drivers, co-drivers and crew will be accessible during the event, including the Friday Parc Expose prior to the start of the rally. The service area is open to credentialed press at all times of the event. Prior to the event, action photography and video will be obtainable at the practice stage for credentialed press only. During the event, action photography and video will be possible from viewing areas set up along the rally course, as well as other sites. Media information and Contacts: Media relations will be able to provide driver and co-driver interviews, event results and other information via telephone or e-mail. The Rally starts at 3:00 PM Friday afternoon, immediately following a Parc Expose of all the rally cars at the Old Atlanta Middle School in downtown Atlanta. Selected late entries, news For the third year in a row the event has is the largest Sno*Drift SCCA ProRally ever, with 67 entrants on the start list. Included in that list are an impressive number of overseas competitors, including the Higgins brothers; Mark and David, along with their co-drivers Michael Gibson and Calvin Cooledge; 2001 Drivers Champion Mark Lovell, with co-driving regular Steve Turvey, and a new co-driver, Rory Kennedy, for 2001 Drivers Champion runner up Seamus Burke. Returning for a second season along with Turvey are Michael Kidd, co-driving for 2001 rising star Ramana Lagemann, and Ian Bevan with 2001 Production class runner-up Craig Peeper. If the name "Calvin Cooledge" sounds eerily familiar, that's because we had an early 20th century President with a similar name. And yes, he is related. According to Denbighshire, UK's Calvin, the family split occurred in 1634, with the future Presidential wing of the family settling in Watertown, NY, and the rallying family staying back in the old country. The exact moment of the spelling change isn't clear, but 10 rallys from now we will know if "Series Champion Cooledge" and "President Coolidge" are synonymous. Rallying Legend John Buffum landed the first surprise of the season, arriving with not two but three Hyundais, with Canadian rallying stars Frank and Dan Sprongl in the team's evergreen (and final rally) Elantra. Mark Higgins, with Michael Gibons will be driving the #5 Tiburon, and multi-time co-champions Paul Choiniere and Jeff Becker will be returning in the #6 Tiburon. Buffum and Hyundai have made sweeping changes in the team structure, and will be debuting radical, all new 2003 model Tiburon coupes at Round 2 - the Cherokee Trail International Rally, in March. Weather forecast: A distinct lack of snow and above average daytime temperatures this year is making tire choice the buzz word of the event. In the wooded areas of the rally, the roads are solid ice, but clear cut areas are 'defrosted' about 1 inch down, creating a slimy mud over hard packed frozen gravel. At night, with temperatures dipping well below freezing, road conditions will change dramatically. In addition, the forecast is calling for occasional snow flurries throughout the day and night, but with sharply warming temperatures on Saturday. For immediate release 25 January 2002 SCCA ProRally Championship - Round 1 - Sno*Drift Lovell, Higgins and Sprongl lead tightly packed herd of rallyists Atlanta, Michigan The 29th consecutive full season of SCCA ProRally Championship competition thundered to life with nearly 70 rally cars today in this hunting and snowmobiling hamlet in northern Michigan. Unseasonably warm temperatures created a mixture of icy and muddy road conditions for rallyists to rumble in and crew chiefs to grumble at, as tire choice became the 'black art' of the day. Key Notes & Quotes: The sun came out just in time for the Parc Expose and start of the rally, and was effective at softening a significant amount of the ice remaining on the roads, creating surprisingly fast but slick conditions that made tire choice a real challenge. Tire changes were occurring right up to the last minute, with the field leaving the downtown assembly point with everything from ultra thin ice tires to traditional gravel rally tires and literally everything in between. At the end of the day, it became clear that many a crew chief was on their game, with the top 30 cars in the field separated by less than 10 total minutes, the top 5 by less than two and a half. Retirements were also admirably low, with only three reported in the 67 car field. Not everyone had a perfect season start, however. Rhys Millen's season started with a thud, his Lancer Evo 6.5 sliding off the road in SS2 and getting stuck in the mire. Teammate Lauchlin O'Sullivan did his best to tug Millen out with his Group 2 Lancer, but to no avail. O'Sullivan, driving what may be the only two-wheel drive rally Lancer in the world, had his share of debut problems as well, sliding into an ice-bank on SS2 and cutting two tires. Running out of time, he was only able to change one tire, and ran SS3 with a flat dropping him out of Day one's top 30. Minor dents and dings abounded but Ramana Lagemann's debut as a works driver for Subaru included a really sold whack to the left side of his Open class WRX in SS2, mangling his rear suspension and began knocking over a good sized tree in the process. Peter Lahm followed immediately behind, and finished the tree off for good, along with most of the front of his Mitsubishi Lancer. Both were able to continue on, but neither will be winning any beauty awards. Absent from the tales of woe department is Hyundai, the team having an infinitely better start to their 2002 season than at Sno*Drift last year. At the end of day one all 3 entered cars are running flawlessly, and at the front of the pack - new recruit Mark Higgins in 2nd, Canadian snow and ice ace Dan Sprongl in 3rd, and Paul Choiniere, last year's Sno*Drift winner, comfortably in 4th, barely a minute separating the three. Mark Utecht and new co-driver Jeff Secor, has selected his 3rd different class in as many years, the reigning PGT champion and 2000 season Group 5 champion debuting their new FIA Group N Subaru WRX, finishing day one in 9th overall, and in 2nd place in Group N, just 28 seconds behind Canadian Group N champion Patrick Richard. In Group 2, Mazda Protégé pilot Eric Burmeister, who enjoyed a 10-minute window over a hard-charging Matthew Johnson last year is getting the 'favor' returned this year. Johnson, a North Carolina native who has earned a lot of rally experience in the past year, is leading Burmeister by a couple ticks over a minute, and is also leading the class. The Rally restarts tomorrow, at 8:01 AM in downtown Atlanta, with the first cars scheduled to finish in the late afternoon in nearby Hillman. For immediate release 27 January, 2001 2002 SCCA ProRallysm Championship - Round 1 - Sno*Drift The Sprongls take Hyundai to Top Podium Finish Atlanta, Michigan, the 2002 SCCA ProRally Championship finished its season opening round with Hyundai back in top form after a difficult 2001 season. Canadians Frank and Dan Sprongl, originally of the Czech Republic, ran a steady, well-paced rally in the muddy roads around the host city. Mark Lovell, Subaru's 2001 Driver's champion, with Steve Turvey finished in 2nd place, just a minute and a half behind, and Mark Higgins with Michael Gibbons rounded out the top three for Hyundai in their 2000 Tiburon coupe. Key Notes & Quotes: Maintaining the company's Sno*Drift winning dynasty made this was a perfect 'retirement party' for Hyundai, with all three of the team's cars, the Elantra and both Tiburons, being retired from SCCA ProRally competition after this weekend. The team will debut all new Tiburon coupes at Round 2 in the Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee in mid March. Praise for the season opener ran high, despite the distinct lack of its namesake "snow." Mark Lovell: "What a huge improvement" noted the current SCCA and former British National Rally Champion, "from last year - a truly well run event." Co-Driver Steve Turvey also noted that the spectator attendance was "twice as big" as last year. 2001 Drivers Champion runnerup Seamus Burke (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6), and series veteran Jon Kemp (Audi 4000 quattro) kept the pressure on the field leaders, with independent Burke earning Mitsubishi much needed points in place of the early retired Millen. Kemp and his Audi, with long-time co-driver Rod Hendriksen proved that old hardware in the right hands, and in the right conditions, can still run near the front, was also one of the few vehicles in the top 10 that finished with nearly all the sheetmetal in near pristine condition. The event was not without its share of Intrigue and Drama and that ultimately cost 4th place overall Patrick Richard his finish. The rapidly growing internationally recognized FIA Group N category, which had more entrants at Sno*Drift than at any event in the US since the classes inception in 2000, was the focus of greatly increased scrutiny; at post-event impound and teardown, Richard's class winning, rented Subaru WRX failed him during the transmission inspection for apparently improper gear ratios. Richard is appealing the disqualification decision. Mark Utecht and Jeff Secor, reigning PGT Champions started the season in their new Subaru WRX; and despite ending one stage literally on their door handles, snagged the Group N win leading Henry and Cindy Krolikowski by just under 2 and a half minutes. Hyundai jumps to an early lead in the Overall Manufacturers Championship with Round 1 overall points at: Hyundai 20, Subaru 15, and Mitsubishi 8. In the two-wheel-drive Overall Championship a solid 2nd place finish by Mazda's Eric Burmeister nets the company 15 points, with the world debut of Mitsubishi's US Spec Lancer RMR, finishing a respectable 9th place after numerous punctures and a failed attempt to un-stick teammate Rhys Millen's Lancer Evo, earns the company 2 points. The Driver's Championship starts the season with a distinctly international flavor, with unofficial points standings at: 22 for Canadians Frank and Dan Spongl, 17 for Britons Lovell and Turvey, 14 for Mark Higgins of Wales, and Irish co-driver Michael Gibson, and 12 points for Irishman (but US resident) Seamus Burke, and his Irish co-driver Rory Kennedy. Fifth place Kemp and Hendricksen constitute the first "all-American" team with 10 points each. After this traditional early season start, the SCCA ProRally Championship will take a brief hiatus, resuming action in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for the Cherokee Trails Rally 15-17 March. An internationally listed FIA event, this event will feature SCCA ProRally and SCCA ClubRally action, in the Smoky Mountains of east Tennessee.
