Friday Morning Press Stage Details An informal opportunity for members of the working press to meet with the stars of SCCA ProRally, and see the cars contesting the SCCA ProRally Manufacturers' Championship. A press caravan will depart from the West Coast Olympia Hotel at 7:30 AM Sharp for the press stage location. A press/VIP van will be available on first come/first served basis. All attending Press must be Credentialed prior to leaving for the stage. This is a closed press stage for Manufacturers Championship and select independently entered vehicles only, presented exclusively for registered members of the Press, Supporting Manufacturers representatives, Series Championship and specific team sponsors and VIP's. Rides in the rally cars are not guaranteed, and will be handled purely on a request basis with manufacturer teams and drivers. Selected entries (driver/co-driver): Paul Choiniere and Jeff Becker; SCCA Open Class 2000 Hyundai Tiburon - Multi-time overall SCCA ProRally National Champions Choiniere and Becker come to Wild West in an exceedingly rare condition for the team - 4th overall in Drivers/Co-Drivers points, and 3rd overall in Manufacturers points. While an overall Drivers' Championship, with only three events remaining is a near mathematical impossibility, Hyundai, with some strong year-ending finishes, can still mount a significant charge for the Manufacturers title. No question, the outcome of this event, which Hyundai won last year, (Lawler/Bradley) will determine the company's strategy for the balance of the season. Subaru's new WRX's have been virtually unstoppable this season, and there is no reason to suspect that their impressive string of podiums and victories isn't sustainable. The Prodrive managed team shows top form at every event, and has the 2002 Group N Manufacturers championship already in the bag. Top podium finishes from Lovell and Scheible this weekend have the potential to all but shut out the challengers. After a three-event hiatus, Richard Tuthill and John Bennie are back. The previously unknown in the US duo from the UK took the SCCA ProRally Championship by storm with an overall win at their debut event at Cherokee and 2nd place at Oregon Trail; by virtue of those finishes they are still placed 6th overall in the Drivers championship. Driving a fresh Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI, Tuthill and Bennie are rumoured to be committed to finish the balance of the season and as such, stand a very good chance of really shaking up the overall Championship chances for Mark Lovell and Seamus Burke. Seamus Burke and Frank Cunningham - the leading independent entries and a mere 9 points out of the top championship spot, will need a bit of luck to recapture the top of the leader board at Wild West; but, with their impressive "podium slot at every round" season, there isn't much that is out of these two gentleman's grasp. Event Rank: This rally is a full points SCCA ProRally Championship event. Drivers earn points towards the national championship, and supporting manufacturers (Hyundai, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi) earn points towards overall and class Manufacturers' Championships. Press Credentials: Event Press/Photo credentials will be available at registration on Thursday evening and Friday. Access to press-only photo areas, and to the post event parties will require a press pass. Credentials are available only to members of the working press. Identification and/or work assignment required. Visuals, Interviews & Media information: During the event, action photography will be possible from spectator and select press-only viewing areas along the rally course. Drivers, co-drivers and crew will be accessible throughout the event, including the Friday afternoon Parc Expose. The two-day performance rally will be held on closed Simpson Timber Company roads in the Mason County area west of Olympia, near the town of Shelton. Selected entries, news: For the first time this season, Hyundai drivers Noel Lawler and Paul Choiniere won the top two seeded draw starting positions, giving the team a much needed morale boost, and a real leg up if the rally becomes dusty. 2001 has been a rough season for the 5-time championship manufacturer, and particularly so for 1999 champions Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley, who have yet to finish a rally this season. Spirits are running high this weekend, as this tough event has several times in the past been the lucky one that changed the fortunes for the team. Seamus Burke and Frank Cunningham are ready to rumble in their independently entered Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI -the Irish duo are waging a season-long battle against Subaru with comparisons to David vs Goliath becoming more and more evident. Burke has a lock on 2nd place in the overall Driver's Championship, just 9 points behind Mark Lovell, but Cunningham is holding an edge over Steve Turvey, Lovell's co-driver. How'd he do that? Turvey took a one-event holiday at STPR, a mis-que that now puts him 13 points behind Cunningham. US and Canadian Production GT Champion Patrick Richard, who entered his first overseas event in Australia this past weekend, is back from down under and will be running his own Open class Subaru Impreza that he 'nearly debuted' at Ojibwe. Richard was forced into a last minute withdrawal at that event with transmission problems. In the two-wheel drive category, the crowd pleasing 'school bus yellow' Volvo of local favorite Carl Jardevall is back, and this time fellow Volvo devotee and equally crowd pleasing Bill Malik will be in hot pursuit. Sandwiched between the two wild men and their flying rocks will be 1998 Gr 2 champion, "mild mannered" David White, who's driving style and vehicle choice (VW Golf GTi) is as completely different from Jardevall and Malik as night is from day; making a great show for the rally fans that are coming from all over the country to watch the spectacle that is SCCA ProRally. The Rally starts tomorrow afternoon from downtown Shelton at 5:30 PM, following a 1-hour open to the public Parc Expose of all the rally cars, at 3rd and Franklin Streets. The start order, due to the large size of the field, has been condensed down to the top 50 teams for this release. The complete listing, with up to the minute updates, is available at the Wild West website address shown below. In the end, some of the biggest players had fallen, some seasoned independents had long-awaited excellent results, and some new upstarts got their first taste of high-ranking national attention. Key Notes: Event organizers made a rare decision prior to the start to run the entire rally with "2 minute dust windows." SCCA ProRally events start cars on-stage at one-minute intervals; but due to the very dry and virtually windless conditions here in Washington, a stifling dust situation existed which had a direct effect on the safety of the event. By making this change, however, the event automatically would run behind schedule, so some hectic behind-the-scenes work by the event committee was required to keep things as near to the published schedule as possible. Friday nights stages, and results, were much as one might expect based on previous event outcomes - Subaru was having a solid evening, Hyundai was challenged but up to the task, and Mitsubishi was once again relying on independent entries to keep their flag in the air. About the only surprise of the evening was Richard Tuthill's 6th position, when conventional wisdom might have placed him in the top three. Also pleasing was an exceptionally short retirement list - perhaps the 2 minute windows were working well, or the consistently poor visibility (some drivers said that a 5-minute window wouldn't have been enough) was keeping everyone on their toes. Saturday, however, was a new day - and immediately the entire complexion of the event changed dramatically. SS7 - a long stage - started eating its young right away, with four Pro entries and nearly double that number of Club entries not making it to the end. SS9 was equally cruel, but this time snagged two front runners Leg One's overall leader Mark Lovell had his left front tire delaminate, a violent failure that took out the shielding around the cars front wiring harness, and then the harness itself; effectively 'unplugging' the engine , bringing the Subaru to a halt midway through the longest stage in US Rallying - 28.5 miles. Reigning champion Paul Choiniere, who was leading the event going into SS9, suffered a turbo failure near the same area, nd while able to complete the stage, was forced to withdraw at service. In the meantime, Tuthill, who on Leg One was beset with routebook and map interpretation problems that slowed him down, overnight worked with longtime co-driver John Bennie to get themselves re-acquainted with American rallying, and came out of the box on Saturday absolutely on fire, charging to the front. By midday, it became clear that the two leader retirements, and Tuthill's well-timed offense effectively have put the overall championship points race into a shredder. While all of this was going on, relative unknown Nat T-Stow, who successfully debuted his privately entered Subaru WRX at Ojibwe Forests last month, was quietly working his way up the leaderboard; securing himself a Production GT victory, and a career first Top 5 finish, just behind Karl Scheible. Additionally, local driver Scott Trinder, making his first drive in his recently acquired ex-Patrick Richard Subaru Impreza 2.5RS snapped up his first Top 10 Pro finish. Both men, plus the consistently astonishing Ramana Lagemann, represent the rapidly growing new pool of talent in SCCA ProRally. In the Two-Wheel Drive category, the expected battle of the rock-throwers versus the front drivers didn't completely materialize, with seasoned veteran David White diligently pointing his trusty VW Golf GTi down the stage roads at just the right pace, building a solid 3 minute lead over Bill Malik's immaculately prepared Volvo 240. The remaining rock-throwing duties were handed over to Andrew Havas, as Carl Jardevall's day came to and end with a front suspension failure late on Leg One. Havas himself had a challenging event , suffering a suspension and wheel failure of his own on SS9, losing nearly 14 minutes in the process. The last Group 5 survivor; Tad Ohtake, was never able to make up the difference, himself having lost seven minutes on SS3 dealing with an alternator failure. And finally - Tony Chavez, the Production class stalwart that has been hounding class leader Craig Peeper all season, took over the class lead here in Washington. Chavez drove a well paced rally, as he literally watched his entire class evaporate before him - 'StudBug" driver Michael Halley had to scratch the event due to transport problems, Class leader Craig Peeper stuffed his Focus into a tree on SS3, and Mark Tabor's engine seized overnight, and was unable to restart on Day Two. This left the lucky Chavez with only one thing to do - check the fuel level and drive a smooth rally - which he and co-driver Doug Robinson did with style. With only an 8 point margin, With Tuthill's win, Choiniere and Lovell's DNF's, and Burke's persistent podium residency, the Overall points chase has become a real hornets nest as the championship season heads into its final two events. Unofficially, the Overall drivers points are: Burke: 129, Lovell 123, Scheible 78, Tuthill 63, and Choiniere 60. In the Manufacturers Championship, the situation is even tighter - Subaru's lead in the overall has diminished slightly, and the automaker is now tied with Mitsubishi in Open class. The unofficial points now stand at: Subaru 134, Mitsubishi 127, and Hyundai 115.
