Though Jay grew up around racecars, he and long time co-driver Bill Feyling had never seen a real rally car until they volunteered as stage workers at the 98 Gorman Ridge ClubRally in Southern California. The pair had been running a highly modified Ford Taurus in the Nevada Open Road Race Series and were looking for something a little saner. The sight of fully prepped Rally cars rumbling with power and driving lights a blase was intoxicating. They were hooked! Jay told the other workers that they would be back next year with a car. In fact, that is exactly what they did. Just four months later Jay purchased an 83 Toyota Corolla, prepped to California Rally Series Stock Class specifications.
In 1999 Jay and Bill attended Rally School in Laughlin, Nevada and made their ClubRally debut at Rim of the World. Due to the meticulous preparation of their Scott Brothers built Corolla, the team managed to finish middle of the pack overall. Rim was the start of a strong ClubRally season. With only two DNF's, one driver error and one mechanical, they ended up second in CRS Stock Class and Second in SOPAC G2, moving up to a Seed 3 Club driver.
The year 2000 brought a new car and a decision to run the National Pro events with the intent of getting a feel for the roads outside of the SOPAC Division. The first event of the millennium, Oregon Trail, netted a Group 2 second and an 8th overall. The following month, Rim of the World saw a Class win and a move up to 7th overall. The team was on fire, the point’s race was on, the only thing left to do was going East, and that they did.
A hard crash at the Prescott Forest ProRally put them out of the title chase but their three top ten finishes were good enough to move from ProRally Seed 6 to Seed 2, secure 18th overall and the award for National ProRally Rookie of the Year. At the Club level, Jay was the SOPAC Group 2 champion and second in CRS 2WD Open. They later traveled to the 2000 ClubRally Shoot-out and finished second in class.
The year 2001 is back to the future. Jay has changed his Region of Record back to the NORPAC Division. They have rebuilt their original Scott Brothers Stock Class Toyota Corolla to full Group 2 specifications and are hunting for the National title. Along with the continued support of Willans Safety Harnesses and Silverstone Tyres, they are proud to add Trasher Magazine as a primary sponsor and look forward to bringing ProRally exposure to the skate board crowd.
