Rocky Road Racing Brings Home an Unexpected Overall Win

SHILLINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA -- The Rocky Road Racing team and their Steve Moyer Subaru, KAM Specialties sponsored 1996 Subaru Impreza survived the Maine Forest Rally Friday and Saturday, besting 51 other teams on one of the toughest rallies in North America, then captured the overall win at the inaugural Maine Forest RallyCross on Sunday.

"The Maine Forest Rally is a tough event, but this year we decided to not hold back as much" said team owner and driver Don Kennedy. The team took advantage of their DMS suspension and the durability that Subaru builds into every one of its cars to improve their stage times from previous years, bettering some by almost 2 minutes. "I also started working on left foot braking, and that seemed to help me carry more speed through the corners, which is something that we really need considering were competing mostly against turbo charged cars."

The team also seems to have left behind the flat tire problems that plagued them all last year. "We had more flat tires last year then I can remember us having in all our other years of racing" crew chief Keith Kennedy commented. Though the team did suffer one dented rim, all the service crew really needed to do at each stop was put fuel in the car, check oil levels and tire pressures, and generally look over or clean off the car. "I think we expended more energy this weekend packing and unpacking the service vehicle, and moving form service area to service area than we did working on the rally car!"

While the rest of the Rocky Road Racing team was heading home to Pennsylvania, navigator Matt Kennedy had moved to the drivers seat to compete in the inaugural Maine Forest RallyCross. Despite going up against many newer or more powerful cars, Matt won the Production 4WD class and to his surprise managed to finish first overall by 10 seconds. The day was not without its heart-pounding moments though. "I was sitting in line waiting to pull up to the start for my third run when someone came up and told me it looked like the tread was separating on one of my tires. It turned out to be a chunk of electrical tape I ran over and picked up."
