Black River Stages ClubRally Harrisville, NY
Round #5 - NEDIV SCCA ClubRally Championship
September 25, 1999
4. Rally Racing News had planned to post reports on Friday night and on
Saturday but upon arrival at the Rod & Gun Club in Harrisville we
discovered we were "communication challenged". The cell phones
roamed endlessly looking for a non-existent cell to connect to only
to be matched by humans walking around with phone cord in hand looking
for a phone jack.
5. Most of the rally administration and all of the service takes place
this year at the Harrisville Rod & Gun Club. The grounds of the club
are large enough to provide service areas for all of the teams as well
as on site indoor toilet facilities and meals for the competitors and
workers.
6. A late entry to the event is the team of Jon Pizzagalli and Lance Smith
driving the Vermont SportsCar Mitsubishi EVO V. This should make for a
strong challenge to the other teams with their sights set on the overall
win. This includes the team of Sylvester Stepniewski and Adam Pelc
in their Audi Quattro, last years winning team of Mike and Reny Villemure
driving their "not your father's" VW Bug, "rookie hotshoe" Alex Erisoty
with veteran co-driver Ben Greisler in yet another fast Audi Quattro,
and Rick Davis teamed for this event with the rally Chairman Greg Healey's
co-driver John MacLeod driving Rick's always fast BMW 318.
7. All of the classes are well represented with 15 entries in both Open
and Group 2, 6 in Group 5, and 4 each in PGT and Production.
8. 44 cars checked into the Main Time Control at the Rod & Gun Club.
The first set of roads, being only a short transit away, would total
five stages. The first 7.5 mile road being used twice with the second
5.6 mile stage run three times.
9. At the lunch break after stage 5 most of the cars were still running.
One notable exception was the Production Nissan of Ted & Lise Mendham
who rolled on stage 4. "I was taking it easy because we had already been
through the stage once," said Ted, "the car slipped off the road and the
next thing we knew we rolled over and ended up leaning against a very
large tree". Both team members were unhurt and were able to drive the
car back to service, but were "Time Barred" and unable to continue.
10. Selected scores at the halfway point:

31 G2 Kammer/Adams 32.42
29 O Fry/Kennedy 32.67
101 P Kishkarev/Paleologis 41.97
11. Several first-time drivers are entered in the rally. Among them, the current
leaders of both PGT and Production. In PGT, Bruce Perry is driving his first
rally in a newly prepared Eagle Talon with Canadian Andrew Miller in the
co-driver's seat. Leading Production is Dimitri Kishkarev and Nick Paleologis
in the x-Pete Pollard VW.
12. The Mazda RX-7 of Terdsuk Srisook and David Shindle succumbed to suspension
failure on stage 7.
13. After Stage 7 a decision was made by the organizers to cancel stages 8 and 9
which were a re-run of stages 6 and 7 due to detiorating road conditions and
also to bring the rally back to the published time schedule.
14. The last two stages, which were located within walking distance of downtown
Harrisville, proved to be the favorite of the rally. A large number of spectators
walked in from the finish to watch the cars "yumping" over the many crests.
15. As the 30 finishers made their way to the Harrisville Fire Hall for the Pizza
Party, the unofficial scores revealed Jon Pizzagalli and Lance Smith the overall
winners. This was the first-ever win for long-time competitor Jon Pizzagalli.
16. The awards ceremony commenced at 10 PM with rallymaster Keith Kreisler as MC.
Several special worker awards were presented in recognition of duty "above and
beyond the call". Cash prizes were awarded to the top three places in each class
and first through third overall teams.
