Vancouver Island's Unique Performance Rally

June 11 & 12, 1999
CANCELLED

We are unhappy to announce that the Edge of the Rock Stage Rally in British Columbia Canada has to be cancelled. Due to an infestation of the gypsy moth, the whole area and surroundings are being placed in a quarantine zone by the logging companies and the Ministry of the Environment and this will last for the next 2 to 3 years. Until this invasive pest is eradicated or at least considered to be under control this quarantine will continue over the only area on Vancouver that has been available for closed road rallying. It should be noted that the Edge venue is actually clear of the pest, but they are trying to ensure that it will remain so. Unfortunately all areas leading into the area of the rally are plagued with this destructive foreign invader and therefore the closure.

This fourth performance rally run on Vancouver Island by the Nanaimo Sports Car Club will use generally the same set of roads as used in the first three events. They are just southwest of Duncan, BC. The first running in 1996 drew rave reviews about the road quality and happy satisfaction due to the great stage distances compared to transit distance. The second running used even more interesting roads and drew even more rave reviews. The third year we were part of the Pacific Northwest (SCCA) Divisional series.

The area is private logging land and is riddled with mainline and secondary logging roads suitable for stage events. We will be having registration and tech ONLY ON FRIDAY EVENING. Then we will have a full day of rallying Saturday. Routes have been fully planned, with 3 stages totalling 89 km comprising the 1st Regional, called the Edge, and those same three stages run in reverse direction comprising the 2nd Regional, called the Rock. This makes 178 km or about 110 miles of stage compared to about 30 miles (48 km) of transits resulting in a terrific stage to transit ratio.

The whole area is gated, and service will be inside the secured area. No fuel or power will be available at service, although once again we will be providing toilet facilities, tow trucks, and ambulance on site. The roads can be really fast, and are nice and wide in some sections with interesting narrower and twistier sections also to be navigated.

A sanctioned Canadian Association of Rallysport event, edge of the rock rally will be conducted under the CARS General Competition Rules. Classes will be per CARS General Competition Rules.
