Carl Merrill, Maine with his Vermont co-driver, Lance Smith, out
drove all other competitors and the extreme weather conditions to win this
weekend's Michelin Rocky Mountain Rally. Merrill in his Norsemen Resorts
Ford Escort Cosworth beat the Eagle Talon of Barry and Sandra Latreille
from Ontario by over 3 minutes. Third place, another 3 minutes back, was
the Swedish team of Pelle Eriksson and Lennart Pullander in a Volvo.
Throughout the rally, the Merrill/Smith team were challenged stage
by racing stage by Selchuk Karamanoglu's open class Eagle Talon.
Karamanoglu, a former Turkish national rally champion, had the fastest
times over the stages. A ten minute road penalty robbed him of the win and
left Karamanoglu in 4th place after a stellar performance on the twisting,
slippery roads.
Over 50 mm of rain in the Porcupine Hills turned the usually stable
gravel to slippery grease-like surfaces where teams fought for traction and
speed, and drivers were challenged to keep their cars on the roads. This
was a huge advantage for the four wheel drive cars which claimed 3 of the
top 4 positions.
Jorge Dascollas and Greg Hofer, in their Michelin sponsored VW Golf
was the top Calgary team. They finished 5th overall and 2nd in the Group 2
(two wheel drive) class. Tim Bendle, also from Calgary, drove his Datsun
510 with crisp panache, but ran out of fuel just short of the service area,
losing 15 minutes, and this dropped him from 3rd place to 9th overall.
Other top North American drivers had mechanical problems on
Friday's opening stage at Race City Motorsport Park dropping them from the
event. Last weekends (Bighorn Rally) winners, Frank and Dan Sprongl from
Mississauga Ontario, had turbo and engine problems with their Castrol Audi
Quattro. Also suffering engine failure on the fast track , were Sam
Bryan's, Washington Audi, and the Quebec Eagle Talon owned and driven by
Yves Barbe.
Merrill's win at the Rocky and 4th place finish at the Bighorn
Rally gives him 65 points and a large lead in the 1997 Canadian Rally
Championship series. Frank Sprongl and Barry Latreille are tied for second
with 40 points each. The next event on the schedule is the Rallye Michelin
Baie de Chaleurs in New Richmond Quebec on July 4-5, 1997.
Stage results and photo's will be posted to the "Rocky" website on Wednesday.
