Maine Forest PRO Rally
Round #6 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
Rumford, Maine
Press Notes #1 - Thursday, July 30 - 9:00 AM EDT
1. Welcome to the River Valley region of Southern Maine, and the 11th
running of the Maine Forest PRO Rally. This event started in 1991,
with two feet of snow on the ground and sub-zero temperatures, and ran
once a year in December until 1994, when the July event was added.
The July, 1994 event was a coefficient 3 divisional (regional rally)
where the national drivers could score 60 percent of their normal
points, and the summer rally became a full national event in 1995.
In 1996, the Sports Car Club of America's PRO Rally Board decided that
the rally that ends each season should vary by location so drivers from
all over the country would have a chance to attend the year-end
banquet. This means that the Maine winter event happens only every
couple of years as the schedule calls for West and Midwest year-end
events (1996 - Olympia, Wash. and 1998 - Houghton, Mich.).
2. The weather promises to be reasonable this weekend, considering the
heat that has been present over the Northeast over the past month.
Partly sunny and warm, with temperatures in the low 80's during the day
and the low 60's at night. Humidity should be below 70 percent, with
only a chance of afternoon thundershows both Friday and Saturday - not
completely bad news as a brief shower would keep the dust down.
3. Replica Productions, of Cambridge, Mass., producers of the rally
coverage on ESPN2, have announced air dates for the Maine Forest PRO
Rally. They are:
Tuesday, September 8, at 6:30 PM Eastern
Wednesday, September 9, at 3:30 AM Eastern
4. An important note for those who plan to attend the Lake Superior PRO
Rally - the last event of the season - in October. Organizer Lyn
Nelson has asked that we put out the following message:
Forest service requirements have restricted the entry for the
D&N Bank Lake Superior PRO Rally to 50 cars total limit (national and
divisional). I'm concerned that with the tight point spread and so
many new people we have to get the word out REALLY early so people can
make their plans for the next few events. We're not setting a quota
between national and divisional cars. Looks like we'll be basing it on
postmark date! Our registrations will be out by the end of
August...much, much earlier than last year. If you have any questions,
please contact me via phone or e-mail.

Maine Forest PRO Rally
Round #6 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
Rumford, Maine
Press Notes #2 - Thursday, July 30 - 9:00 PM EDT
5. A couple of late DNS (did not start):
--Defending Maine Forest Rally champions (summer and winter '97) Frank
and Dan Sprongl and the Audi Dealer Team Castrol entry will be a
scratch for the forthcoming Maine Summer Rally. The team's
sponsorship arrangements are for Canada only, and they have not been
able to complete negotiations to expand their program to include all
of the U.S. rounds of the North American Rally Cup in time for
Maine. The team hopes to have arrangements in place in time for the
next event in Minnesota, and to be able to complete the SCCA
calendar.
--The Dean Panton Hyundai Elantra, which ran well until a crimped
exhaust put it out of the rally at STPR, will not make it to this
event as the big Trinidad rally is coming up next week, and the
Jamaican team needs time to prepare for that event.
6. After its shunt at STPR, the Bruce Newey Toyota Celica will take the
rest of the season off in order to gear up for a yet-to-be finalized
new effort for 1999.
7. Every year, Gary Webb's Atlantic Driving School puts on a TSD rally for
local charities, and this year, 17 entries competed for prizes in three
classes as well as two sets of Michelin tires. Howard and Patti
Mikkelsen from Harrison, Maine, were the overall winners with just nine
points, with Fred and Jessica Maplebeck - last year's winners - from
Salem, NH, second with 12 points. The tires were won by Andrew
Sylvester, of Livermore, Maine, and Walter Pulkkinen, of Minot, Maine.
8. Carl Merrill brought the series-leading Ford Escort Cosworth in on
Thursday to give rides to the Mead Publishing Papers executives on one
of the stages not being used for this year's event. After two rides,
Merrill lost fourth gear and developed turbo problems - giving his
service crew a busy night before the real rally begins.
9. Many of the early-season, West Coast drivers who have forged early
points leads have made the trip to Maine - unlike previous years when
the East Coasters have taken over the classes at this point. Trevor
Donison, leader in the Production class in his Plymouth Neon ACR, has
made the trip from Vancouver, Washington, to try to lengthen his lead
of 34 points, while Lee Shadbolt, from Tigard, Oregon, will try to
build on his six point lead in Production GT earned in his Subaru
Impreza. Dave White, from Benicia, California, has a ten point lead in
Group 2 in a VW GTI over Bill Malik's Volvo 240 (from Burbank,
California - both are here. Finally, Ralph Kosmides' Toyota Supra,
from Newport Beach, California, will try to build on its 11-point lead
in Group 5. The only leader not from the West Coast is Carl Merrill,
the overall points leader.

Maine Forest PRO Rally
Round #6 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
Rumford, Maine
Press Notes #3 - Friday, July 31 - 7:00 PM
9. Another note from an upcoming rally - this one from the organizers of
the Ojibwe Forests PRO Rally. Both the headquarters hotel - the
Northern Inn - and the neighboring Comfort Inn - are full of PRO Rally
people. The organizer has reserved a block of rooms at the Best
Western - Bemidji (less than a mile away), so get your rooms quickly.
The Best Western's number is (218) 751-0390.
10. The resources of a special guest came into play last night when
Carl Merrill's car had its problems on a demonstration run yesterday.
Here on vacation from Borham, England, is Gary "Gazzer" Baker, a
veteran car preparer of Ford Escort Cosworths for the World Rally
Championship. WeeGee Smith, Merrill's car preparer, has established a
relationship with Baker from his numerous trips to England for
technical info on the Cosworth, and Baker is returning the favor by
coming to Maine to help Carl this weekend. And last night, he was a
big help as WeeGee replaced the turbo and installed new gears 4-7.
11. The advantage of being an airline pilot is that you might be able to
arrange your schedule around rally activity. Mike Whitman, a resident
of Farmington, New Mexico, left his car in Pennsylvania after STPR, but
was able to arrange his America West flying schedule to swoop by Penn.
several times since early June to work on the car - especially brakes
which were troublesome at that event.
12. With registration coming to a close, it looks like 61 cars - a record
field - will start this event. The cars will run two 4-1/2 mile stages
just north of Rumford, and then come back to town to run two stages
through the streets of Rumford. These are the only two PRO Rally
stages in the U.S. that run on downtown streets. The downtown stages
will be run in reverse starting order at 30-second intervals.
13. The Gail Truess/Patti Hughes Mazda 323GTX, formerly an Open class car,
became a Production GT car courtesy of Bill Driegert's co-driver Tony
Lumino, who lent Truess a back seat to make the car legal.
14. 55 cars - all the national entrants - started the 11th Maine Forest PRO
Rally in downtown Rumford, and the only car which did not make it back
to the downtown area after the first two stages was the Audi 4000
Quattro of Jon Kemp/Gail McGuire, which went off the road at speed and
hit several hard objects before coming to a stop. Details to come.
15. Bruno Kreibich/Rod Hendricksen Audi Quattro and Lee Shadbolt/Paul
Eklund Subaru Impreza both spun on stage #2, losing valuable time in
class, but staying on the road.

Maine Forest PRO Rally
Round #6 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
Rumford, Maine
Press Notes #4 - Saturday, August 1 - 10:00 AM
17. Of the divisional-only competitors entered in today's event,
the Chris Sanborn/David Holroyd Audi Quattro is a no-show.
18. More on the Kemp/McGuire off. On stage #1, Kemp was headed for a
right hand bend after a straight when the rear end slid off slightly
into a ditch. Thinking he could power out, Kemp kept his foot in the
gas, but the car did not come out of the ditch. Instead, the rear end
hit a tree, spun the car on its nose, and the car went airborn high
enough to saw off a birch tree four feet off the ground. Neither
entrant was hurt, but the car could not continue, with the trunk lid
being the only body panel not in need of repair. Mechanically, bent
control arms put them out of the event.
19. The "new" Cosworth-powered car at this event is the Peter Smejkal/Vlad
Hladky Ford Escort Cosworth built as a rally car in the Czeck
Republic. Smejkal hit a boulder yesterday, cracking the skid plate,
so he will proceed cautiously today, try to get the car to finish in
its first event.
20. The Mead Divisional Rally has 30 entries, 26 of which are also running
the national event as well. Mike Hurst and Rick Davis should battle
it out for the 02, while Chris Havas is the favorite in U2. The
picture is not as clear in 4WD, as Ken Stewart, Gail Truess, Dean Fry,
Garen Shrader, Ivan Orisek, Sylvester Stepniewski, and Lee Shadbolt
could all win.
21. After four stages in the national event (Friday night), the Paul
Choiniere/Jeff Becker Hyundai Tiburon holds a 13-second lead over the
David Summerbell/Michael Fennell Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV. The Carl
Merrill/Lance Smith Ford Escort Cosworth is one second behind
Summerbell after losing second place with a slower first in-town
stage. Noel Lawler/Charles Bradley are fourth in the Hyundai Elantra,
despite Lawler completely looping the car at the end of the downtown
stage (#3) after overcooking it in the last corner.
Class leaders include:
--Tom Ottey/Pam McGarvey Mazda 323GTX (5th overall - first in
Production GT).
--Chris Havas/Eric Trembley VW GTI (9th overall - first in
Group 2).
--Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes Toyota Supra (12th overall - first in
Group 5).
--Jay Kowalik/Scott Embree Honda Civic VTEC (16th overall - first
in Production.

Maine Forest PRO Rally
Round #6 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
Rumford, Maine
Press Notes #6 - Saturday, August 1 - 9:00 PM
Note: Notes #5 - containing item #22 - were the standings from Friday
night which were already posted previously - this note was issued at
the event in order to print card copies.
23. In for service after seven stages (three stages today), Paul Choiniere
and Jeff Becker in their Hyundai Elantra continue to lead the David
Summerbell/Michael Fennell Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV by 24 seconds.
The third car in the mix - the Carl Merrill/Lance Smith Ford Escort
Cosworth - got airborn on stage #5 and hit a rock upon landing,
pulling the half-shaft out of the transmission. It's a particularly
costly DNF for Merrill, who had a points lead on both Summerbell and
Choiniere going into the event. Noel Lawler/Charles Bradley move into
third place in the Libra Racing Hyundai Elantra, 57 seconds behind
Summerbell.
24. The classes after #7:
--Bill Driegert/Tony Lumino Mitsubishi Galant (fourth overall - first
in Production GT).
--Chris Havas/Eric Trembley VW GTI (8th overall - first in
Group 2).
--Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes Toyota Supra (9th overall - first in
Group 5).
--Jay Kowalik/Scott Embree Honda Civic VTEC (20th overall - first
in Production.
25. Other DNF's include:
--Hynds/Mitchell VW GTI - suspension
--Smejkal/Hladky Ford Escort Cosworth - transmission
--Rosenshein/Cote Suzuki Swift - suspension/crash
--Mendham/Mendham Nissan Sentra - engine
--White/Casey Saab 99 - engine
26. Other service reports:
--The Tom Ottey/Pam McGravey Mazda 323GTX, which has a new
transmission and rebuilt engine since STPR, lost the lead in PG to
Bill Driegert as Tom was afraid to strain the new tranny by turning
up the turbo boost. But he wants to get the class lead back, and
plans to turn up the boost for the longer stages this afternoon.
--The Mike Hurst/Rob Bohn Mazda RX-7 lost six minutes on stage #7 when
a rock hit the right front rim, breaking the wheel and leaving only
the immediate area around the bolt pattern attached to the car. The
wheel and perfectly-inflated tire is still out in woods somewhere.
--The Vinnie Frontinan/Frank Cunningham VW Corrado is lagging behind
the Group 5 field as the supercharger is not working.
--The Lesley Suddard/Marc Goldfarb Dodge Charger, currently third in
Group 5, is running 100 percent better than the last event after
engine work, but Suddard was replacing a MAP sensor at service
after experiencing ignition problems.
--The Mike Whitman/Paula Gibeault Ford Sierra Cosworth broke two
axle hub bolts - a nasty problem as it is difficult to remove the
broke bolts. Enter service neighbor Guy Light, who lent his
expertise and a torch to remove the bolts, and let the Whitman crew
27. The battle lines have been drawn for the final stages in several
classes:
--Paul Choiniere and Jeff Becker continue to maintain a 20 - 30 second
lead over David Summerbell/Michael Fennell throughout the rally, but
the two cars are turning similar stage times. Both have to go all
out to gain a win, but a mistake could put either out of the
competition.
--In Production GT, the Bill Driegert/Tony Lumino Mitsubishi Galant
continues to hold a slim lead despite the best efforts of the Steve
Gingras/Eric Carlson Eagle Talon. Gingras said he ran the best
stage of his life on stage #9, only to find out that Driegert beat
him by 1/100 of a second.
--Although he will not make it to enough events to run for the
national title, the Chris Havas/Eric Trembley VW GTI is showing the
Group 2 drivers from the West Coast that the class is alive and well
in New England. Havas has maintained a 30 - 60 second lead over
White - the national points leader - all day, with the Bill
Malik/Christian Edstrom Volvo 240 another 30 seconds back.
--Group 5 points leader Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes has a comfortable
lead over the Vinny Frontinan/Frank Cunningham VW Corrado, thanks to
the crash of closest pursuers Rick Davis/Ben Greisler in the BMW
318ti. Rick went into a ditch at high speed, rolled his car over,
and came to rest on the car's side. The drivers and spectators
couldn't quite get the car pushed onto its wheels, causing a DNF.
--Jay Kowalik/Scott Embree in the Honda Civic VTEC have a comfortable
lead in Production.

Maine Forest PRO Rally
Round #6 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
Rumford, Maine
Press Notes #7 - Sunday, August 2 - 8:00 AM
28. It came down to the last stage - a 15-miler - and Paul Choiniere/Jeff
Becker had a scant 12-second lead in their Hyundai Tiburon over the
David Summerbell/Michael Fennell Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV. Whoever
won the rally would move into first place in the points. Choiniere
ran as hard as he could, and then waited at the finish for the
Mitsubishi to appear. But, like last year's rally in Prescott, AZ,
when he and Henry Joy had their battle, Choiniere was never able to
compare times with Summerbell. The Jamaican team had a flat tire and
went off the road, damaging the front suspension and unable to
continue. Like Merrill, the Summerbell DNF was a costly one in the
standings as Choiniere now takes the points lead with 58 points, with
Merrill having 51 points and Summerbell 44 going into the next event
in Minnesota the end of the month.
Noel Lawler/Charles Bradley Hyundai Elantra, lurking in the top five
all day, finished second overall, four minutes behind his Libra Racing
teammate. It is the first time that Hyundai has finished one-two
without the driving help of team owner John Buffum. It is also the
highest overall finish for Lawler, who was third at STPR in June.
Class winners:
--Bill Driegert/Tony Lumino Mitsubishi Galant (third overall - first
in Production GT).
--Chris Havas/Eric Trembley VW GTI (8th overall - first in
Group 2).
--Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes Toyota Supra (9th overall - first in
Group 5).
--Jay Kowalik/Scott Embree Honda Civic VTEC (16th overall - first
in Production.
Many more details to come.

Maine Forest PRO Rally
Round #6 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
Rumford, Maine
Press Notes #8 - Sunday, August 2 - 2:00 PM
29. More on the Summerbell off. According to folks who have viewed the
ESPN2 in-car video, Summerbell had a flat tire while running at speed
on the last stage. The car lunged into a burm, and then went off the
road, where rocks and stumps damaged the suspension and punctured the
oil cooler, causing the DNF.
30. The Production class-winning Honda Civic of Jay Kowalik/Scott Embree
finished the last four stages without a rear window as a tow rope and
hook that was zip-tied on the inside of the rear deck broke loose and
shattered the window.
31. The Mike Whitman/Paula Gibeault Ford Sierra Cosworth, after fixing
their axle hub problem after stage #7, actually performed better near
the end of the rally as the rough road conditions help bend the three
remaining bolts back into their normal position.
32. The Garen Shrade/Doc Shrader Ford Sierra Cosworth, seeming destined for
a top ten finish, suffered a setback when Garen bent a control arm and
a shock after slamming a rock on stage 9. The team adjusted their
driving style to make the car last, and they ended up finished 11th and
winning their class in the divisional.
33. Speaking of the divisional, the overall fastest divisional car was the
VW Golf of Chris Havas/Eric Trembley, which won the U2 class. We
mentioned that the Shraders won 04, and they were the second fastest
divisional car overall, and 02 was won by the Dodge Charger of Lesley
Suddard/Marc Goldfarb - 12th fastest divisional car.
34. It was an up-and-down weekend for the Gail Truess/Pattie Hughes Mazda
323GTX Production GT car. Truess and Hughes, both divers for the PPG
CART Pace car team, got together for the first time this spring at
the Headwaters divisional event and finished second overall. This
time, both driver and co-drive made mistakes during the event, pushing
them out of the top 20 despite some good individual stages.
35. The former Cal Landau/Eric Marcus 1991 Production class national
championship VW Golf GTI is now being driven by Brian Vinson/Richard
Beels. The pair finished seventh in the Production class.
36. The Ivan Orisek/Olga Orisek Audi Quattro, which now develops 385
horsepower, suffered from massive oil blow-by, and was forced out of
the event.
37. For those who are planning to fly to the Ojibwe Forests PRO Rally the
end of the month, committee PR chair Sarah Lenz reminds us that the
target date for the Northwest Airlines strike (headquartered in
Minneapolis and the only airline that flies direct to Bemidji) is
August 28.
