Hi All,
Forgive the lateness of the details, but it has been a crazy couple of weeks with Tall Pines being followed immediately by Maine Winter. First, thank you for your generous offer to come out and work the event. Without volunteers like you, the sport of rallying would end tomorrow. Your efforts are truly appreciated by competitors and organizers alike.
Plan on winter conditions up in that area of Maine so the roads will be snow/slush/ice covered. The road will be plowed before the event, but will likely be very slippery in spots. As you know, this is a single road event about 15 miles long, so the timing to get everything done is very tight. The good news is since all the competition occurs on this one stage, you will get to see the cars on 4 separate occasions. Because of the tight schedule, it will not be possible to bring workers out of the stage once the event starts.
I would approach working the event much like a winter day excursion:
- Layers of warm clothes (Saturday's temps are forecast 13F low, 26F HIGH, 40% P.O.P.)
- Full tank of gas in the car; you have 2 long transits and may be running the heater during the day
- Snow tires highly recommended
- Food and Fluids (enough for lunch and a couple of snacks)
- Camera (for those automotive Kodak moments)
- Any other personal items you may find helpful or necessary (T.P.?) for a day out with nature
Here is an outline of the event:
Friday:
If you will be coming up the day before, please drop by the Madison between 7pm and 10pm to sign in and have a drink and share a couple of stories.
Saturday:
Workers will meet Cars 0 and 000 at the rear of the McDonalds in Rumford, Maine by 6:15am Saturday morning. There is a map of the Rumford area on the event website, Rumford Area Map
The workers will convoy up Rt. 2 east to Rt. 17 in Mexico, then North to Oquossoc. From there they will follow Rt. 16 west to the DOT Lot in Wilsons Mills.
If you live closer to Wilsons Mills and want to meet at the DOT Lot, please be there no later than 7:45am, Saturday morning. There is a map of the entire area also on the website in the Maps section. This map is from the summer event. The DOT Lot is on Maine Rt. 16 about 3 miles west of the location marked "Spectator Saturday S1".
Once the entire crew has assembled at the DOT Lot, we will leave in convoy to set up the stage. Car 000 will escort and place all the workers along the stage so that the stage is ready to go in time for Car 0 to open the stage at 9:20am.
From there, the cars will race North to South, and the stage will be reconfigured from South to North (there is a small change in the middle and a couple of crews will move). The cars will then race South to North. They will have a short service and return in the early afternoon and repeat the same North to South, followed by South to North route.
The entire event should be completed by dark and sweep will make sure that everyone gets out of the stage. After the event, everyone is invited to join us for Pizza and more stories downstairs at the Madison.
