Additional news interest:
ˇ The Maine Forest ProRally features one of the few spectator tarmac stages
in the country, this one running through the center of historic downtown
Rumford. The stage is also the final stage of the event, and brings some of
the largest spectator crowds of any USA based rally.
ˇ The Manufacturers' Championship continues at a wide open pace, with the
2nd consecutive overall victory of Karl Scheible's Group N Mitsubishi Lancer
V at June's Susquehannock Trail placing Mitsubishi in a even points heat with
perennial favorite Hyundai. Subaru, with a total of eleven Subaru Imprezas
entered in three different classes, (a record number of entries for that
manufacturer) is certain to build on their points, putting them within
striking distance of either Hyundai or Mitsubishi.
ˇ Perry King, television star and a SCCA road racing veteran; will be
trying SCCA Performance Rally for the first time, driving Hyundai's
Production class Tiburon.
Event Rank:
This rally is a full points SCCA ProRally Championship event. Drivers earn
points towards the national championship, and supporting manufacturers
(Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi) earn points towards overall and
class Manufacturers' Championships.
Press Credentials:
Event Press/Photo credentials will be available at registration on Thursday

Start Order & Late Breaking News:
SCCA ProRally Championship - Maine Forest
Rumford Maine: A USA-record of 115 cars are entered in the Maine Forest SCCA
ProRally Championship event. All four Championship manufacturers (Hyundai,
Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi) are represented, featuring the hugely
successful Hyundai Tiburons and Elantras, 6 Mitsubishi Lancers, and the debut
of several new Subaru Imprezas, in both FIA Group N and SCCA specification
categories.
The two-day event will be held on privately held lumber company roads in the
area west of Rumford. The Rally starts Friday afternoon, 28 July at 3:00 PM
EST.
Selected late entries, news (driver/co-driver):
ˇ Garen and Floyd "Doc" Shrader's Flash Market sponsored Mitsubishi Lancer
Evo IV has a new co-driver - Mike Fennell of Jamaica. No stranger to
Performance Rally, Fennell was the 1998 Overall Co-Driver Champion with
fellow Jamaican David Summerbell, also in a Lancer Evo. Garen's father -
"Doc" will be assuming the role of team manager, as the team prepares to make
the leap to a full-time national championship effort in 2001. Adding Fennell
to the team is "the final key" says Garen, who credits his father with
"really helping with the steep learning curve to run with the series leaders."
ˇ One of the more unusual entries is that of Heikki Salmen, an FIA World
Rally driver from Finland, who is flying in his FIA Gr A Mercedes C200 just
for this event. A 25-year veteran of the sport, Salmen is making his US
performance rally debut this weekend. Also adding to the international
flavor of the event is the late addition of a Russian entry. The
Prokofjeva/Grichetchkine team, driving a VW Golf equipped with Russian rally
tires, will be running for Production class honors.
ˇ Current Canadian performance rally points leader Tom McGeer is making his
first SCCA ProRally start of the season, in his championship leading Subaru
Impreza WRX. Along for the ride is US rally veteran Mark Williams, who also
serves as his co-driver north of the border.
ˇ The weather, which is always a factor in performance rally, has been
exceptionally wet, with flood warnings posted for much of the northeast. The
rain slowed tonight, and the forecast is for a gradual drying off through
Saturday afternoon with partly cloudy skies - certainly effective in keeping
the dust down, at least for the first stages of the event.
ˇ Entrants for this event came from 27 states and the District of Colombia,
3 provinces of Canada, and several overseas countries, makes this one of the
most nationally diverse fields ever.
ˇ The start order, due to the huge size of the field, has been condensed
down to the top 50 teams for this release. The complete listing, with up to
the minute updates, is available at the Maine Forest website address shown
below.

SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #5 - Maine Forest
Leg One Results, Key Notes
Hyundai, Subaru and Mitsubishi 1,2,3, more of each in Top Ten
Rumford, Maine; -- At 3:00 PM Eastern Time this the largest field to ever
start an SCCA ProRally Championship event began the 12th running of the SCCA
Maine Forest ProRally. The start time was 30 minutes earlier than originally
scheduled, to accommodate the huge field.
Key Notes & Quotes:
¨ At the Friday morning Press Stage, actor and road racer Perry King gave
his 2000 Hyundai Tiburon its first test, and came away with big smiles. "I
need to forget everything I know about road racing" commented King, "and
remind myself that when I feel things that aren't familiar, to know that the
car will pull me through." While this is King's first performance rally, the
actor does have considerable track experience, holding SCCA and CART licenses
since the mid 80's.
¨ Patrick Richard, perhaps earning the title of 'the hardest working man in
Performance Rally" - running full rally schedules in both the US and Canada,
got off to a bad start here in Maine - losing the transmission on his Subaru
Impreza during the morning's press stage. A new transmission was found, but
the team couldn't get it installed in time for the start, so Richard got a
tow across the start line by Lauchlin O'Sullivan to earn his 2 starting
points. Getting O'Sullivan to offer the tow was a bit of payback - Richard
stopped on-stage during April's Rim of the World event to offer a
high-centered O'Sullivan a tow. Lauchlin accepted, but the time it took to
get the car off the berm cost Patrick a class win at that event.
¨ Noel Lawler, the defending 1999 Champion is finally having a good day,
holding a slight edge over Canadian points leader Tom McGeer. Pleased with
the Cargotec/Snap-on Tools Hyundai's performance, Noel admitted to finding a
few rocks, but that it wasn't slowing him down: "It's been a long time, but
we're up on the field, and it feels very good." McGeer's strong 2nd place
finish puts Subaru in its highest position of the season, and with 2
additional Subarus in the top10, its strongest manufacturer showing of the
year.
¨ The addition of Michael Fennell to the co-driver's seat on the Shrader's
Flash Market Mitsubishi Lancer team is already paying dividends, with Garen
Shrader holding a comfortable 5th place. "Like many of us, we hit a rock and
bent a rim, but we really are keeping it a little conservative to make sure
we are there at the end" noted Garen; It's really starting to come together,
and we're finding that rhythm."
¨ Special Stage 3 was, unquestionably, the roughest stage yet seen in 2000
season, with nearly every top team at the service having to check alignments,
replace bent control arms and rims, and deal with more punctures after this
single stage than has been seen all season.
¨ With the top 10 teams all within a 2 minute spread, and the next 15 cars
less than a minute and a half behind, the competition is fierce, and the
stage is set for a long and brutal day of competition tomorrow.
¨ Leg two of the Maine Forest ProRally begins at 8:30 AM, and concludes
with the now traditional fan favorite "Downtown Street Stage" in the center
of the Rumford business district at dusk tomorrow evening.

SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #5 - Maine Forest
Hyundai Strikes Back with 2 Podium Finishes
Rumford, Maine: The SCCA Maine Forest ProRally came to an exciting and
controversial conclusion in the streets of downtown Rumford, with the top 10
filled with manufacturer championship cars from across North America. Paul
Choiniere, the 7-time SCCA Overall Champion, swapped the lead with teammate
Noel Lawler early in the day, and drove his Tiburon to the closest finish of
the season, with a margin of only 12 seconds over Canadian Championship
points leader Tom McGeer. Visiting the SCCA ProRally Championship Series for
the first time in three years, McGeer was always in the hunt, and, based on
stage times, would have earned Subaru its first podium finish of the season.
Noel Lawler, running on 3 cylinders for most of the day, and using his lead
advantage from Leg One, held onto his place on the podium, 1 minute and 48
seconds behind McGeer.
Key Notes:
¨ The controversy over the finish positions centers around the McGeer
entry, which was protested by a team outside of the original top three for an
illegal service infraction. As this release went to press, the matter had
been sent to SCCA National appeals court, but the Official Results will show
the top three as Choinere,Lawler and Scheible.
¨ The weather continued to throw challenges to all the entrants, with
continuous changes from dry to torrential downpours throughout the day. The
occasional hard rains turned some of the stages into quagmires or, as was the
case in yesterdays brutal SS3, rocky, tire and suspension abusing torture
tracks as the dirt normally covering the rocks was washed away. The tire
puncture count on Friday alone was at least 35, with the number continuing to
climb today. Seeing crewmembers searching for spares was commonplace as
teams ran out of their own supplies.
¨ After yesterday's brilliant run, it looked like Noel Lawler's dismal
season had finally come to an end. The morning stages started well enough,
but his Open class Tiburon developed engine problems during SS6, finally
losing a cylinder on the way to the lunch-time service. With team orders to
continue, the crew deactivated the fuel injector to the affected cylinder,
the defending National Champion soldiered on, ultimately earning a crucial
championship points earning 3rd place.
¨ Hyundai's #967 Production Class entry with veteran actor but first-time
performance rally pilot Perry King came to an abrupt end about half-way
through SS6, when he wedged his Tiburon between two trees, puncturing the
radiator in the process. Actual body damage to the car is minimal, and the
Driver and Co-Driver are fine, but the loss of coolant ended their day.
¨ Close battles were the order of the day in several classes, with Group 5
and Production classes being particularly hard fought. Mark Utecht, in what
is already being regarded as the drive of his career, placed his time honored
Dodge Omni in the top 10, with a significant 2.5 minute David and Goliath
style victory over Ralph Kosmides in his 1998 Championship winning Toyota
Supra Turbo. Kosmides, also in a death-match with longtime nemesis Rick
Davis and his BMW M3 powered 318 compact, capturing 2nd place in Group 5 by
less than 12 seconds.
¨ A 9 second Production class margin of victory between ultimate winner Ted
and Lise Mendham and challenger Dennis and Claire Chizma was due in part to
some Good Samaritan work by the Chizmas, who used their restored vintage 1973
Porsche 911 to tug fellow Californian Jay Streets out of a ditch in SS9.
Said Claire "There's a reason why we run in the SCCA - it's the people - we
know any number of entrants that would do, and have done, the same for us,
anywhere in the country."
¨ With strong finishes by all the manufacturers, Hyundai's slim points lead
over Mitsubishi is reduced from a mere 7 points to just 5; while Mitsubishi's
lead of 3 points over Subaru grows to 6 - maintaining a virtual 3-way tie
heading into the final four events of the season. Should the results appeal
be approved, Mitsubishi's lead over Subaru would be reduced to just 1 point.
