NORTH CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA RALLY SHORTENED BY FATAL ACCIDENT

Morris, Penn. - The 13th running of the Ski Sawmill ClubRally, part of the Sports Car Club of America's ClubRally program, was halted Saturday after the fourth of 10 racing stages due to a fatal accident involving one of the competitors.

Sandor Kovacs, Jr., 32, of Norwalk, Conn., was pronounced dead at the scene by the deputy coroner of Lycoming County from injuries sustained when the rally car he was navigating - driven by Rafal Listopad, of Garfield, NJ - went off the road and hit a tree. Listopad was airlifted to the hospital in Danville, and subsequently released with only minor injuries.

In the sport of ClubRally, each team has a driver and navigator, with the object to race against the clock on closed forest roads. English Center Road in Pine Township, where the accident occurred, was closed to the public during this rally event. Driving a 1991 Toyota Celica All-Trac, Listopad and Kovacs were running their first event together.

In the 28 years of Sports Car Club of America's rally program, in which thousands of drivers have raced hundreds of thousands of miles, there have been six fatalities - four drivers and two co-drivers.
