Sullivan County Makes Rally New York Unique
Because auto rallies are run on the roads, the character of a rally comes from the
route, and from the hosting community. Rally New York (Saturday, April 16, 2005)
takes its character from Sullivan County.
Sullivan County is home to the type of roads that auto rallyists find challenging:
a mix of pavement and gravel, with lots of the twists and hills. This year's route, from
Monticello to Narrowsburg and back, will include some of the roads which have been
popular in previous Rally New York events.
The area is also home to many of the people who will organize this spring's event.
To give a few notable examples, Ivan and Olga Orisek (of Forestburg) are the chairman
and treasurer, respectively, Ed Jackson (of Narrowsburg) is the event coordinator, Rich
Otis (of Middletown) runs the radio network, and New York State Assemblywoman
Aileen Gunther is the grand marshal.
We'll also see many of the local residents along the roads (and in a few cases on
their front lawns), cheering on the competitors. And many of the local merchants will
provide support by cheerfully providing visiting rallyists and rally workers with
everything from food and lodging to car parts and souvenirs.
