Burke, Williams Win Rally New York 2005
Monticello, New York, One year ago, Georgia-based Irish driver Seamus Burke lost
Rally New York when his car failed while leading. This year, Burke came back, with
Maryland's veteran co-driver Mark Williams in a Hyundai Tiburon, to win the rally
by over a minute.
This time it was Burke's rivals who had problems. Three-time Rally New York winners
Tom Lawless/Jason Gillespie (Mitsubishi Lancer) took an early lead, but suffered a
broken transmission just after half way. And John Drislane/Ronan Burke (Mitsubishi
Lancer), one of the fastest entries, were penalized for early arrival at a checkpoint
following a road section, and later withdrew from the rally.
Patrick Farrell/Kieran McElhinney (Subaru Impreza) finished second, coming back from
fifteenth place early in the rally with a steady drive. Liam Egan/Sean Moriarty
(Mitsubishi Lancer) placed third, and won the Group N (production) class.
