Drislane/Goodman Win First Rally New York U.S.A.
Monticello, New York -- After a day’s driving on the side-roads of Sullivan
County, the team of John Drislane/Paul Goodman (in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution) were clear winners,
taking the first Rally New York U.S.A. by 24 seconds. Eoin McGeough/Laura Keenan (Subaru Impreza)
placed second, a further 52 seconds ahead of Patrick Lilly/Bernard Farrell (Mitsubishi Mirage).
The big winners for the day were Daniel O’Brian/Stephen Duffy (Subaru Impreza), whose
fourth place was enough to take the overall and novice awards in the annual Eastern States Rally Championship.
Jonathan Bottoms/Cindy Krolikowski (Subaru Impreza) were the early leaders. But an
accident on the eighth of the twelve special stages (races against the clock) cost them more time
than they could make up. They placed last of 35 finishers.
The rally was held under seasonably cool but sunny conditions. The first car left the
starting line just after 8 a.m., and the winner returned in the dark after 6 p.m. There were twelve
special stages in the Narrowsburg, N.Y. area, making up 62 of the rally’s 240 miles.
