PRO RALLY SET FOR BIGGEST SEASON EVER; MANUFACTURER INVOLVEMENT DEEPENS

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- It looks like 1983 will be the "Year of the Manufacturer" in PRO
Rallying®. At least eight different carmakers will be fielding official or works teams
in either Open or Production Class during t he upcoming season. While drivers have not
been signed by everyone, it is clear that some 15 separate cars will have factory blessing
in all or part of the 10-event Manufacturer's Championship.

Very few changes in the rules have been made for this season, and all of the teams
who fought for points last season will be back. Audi will be defending its 1982 Champ-
ionship with a new 4wd Audi Quattro for John Buffum. Rod Millen, the 1981 Champion,
has been working for months on a secret Mazda project at Newport Racing. Insiders say
that the new RX-7 may have 4wd -- a modification allowed under PRO Rally rules.

Peuegot will once again field their venerable 504 Coupe and work is afoot to get a
Peugeot Talbot into the country. The nifty British rally car could give Peugeot a fighting
chance in the Open Class rally wars. Renault will have at least one of its Renault 5 Turbos
on the scene again this season and Lincoln-Mercury will debut its Lynx with Gar-Trac
drivetrain and power -- it should be a contender from the word go. Finally, it looks as
though Datsun may at last get serious about the Open Class and field one, or even two,
of its Group B 240SX rallycars.

If Open Class is busy, then ProFduction Class will be absolutely crowded with American
Motors, Audi, Chrysler, Datsun, Ford, Mitsubishi, Oldsmobile, Peugeot, and Renault all
fielding cars at virtually every event. Look for AMC to start with an SX/4 in Production
and then switch to a Jeep Cherokee XJ in Open as soon as it is available -- an American
Quattro? Audi will be back with its Coupe in Production and Chrysler will have the
Charger 2.2, although that will change before the season is over.

Datsun will be back with a media car backed by BFGoodrich and Kontrolle Shocks, and
Mitsubishi may well show up with a similar program. The Ford/Firestone Escort will also
be back with an ex-championat the wheel and Oldsmobile will become the most involved
American factory in PRO Rallying. Peugeot's effort will have some surprises and Renault
may well field a car even though their request for addition of the Fuego Turbo to the
Production Class was denied.

Cibie and Marchal say that they are going to get even more involved to provide
competition to Hella who has been, having a field day in PRO Rallying the past three seasons.
Kontrolle will become involved in a very controlled way and Toyota and Saab will offer
generous contingency programs even though they plan no team of their own. BMW will con-
tinue with its year-end-points fund.

As far as events go, there are several significant happenings including a Double in
Washington state, a Detroit special stage, rallying in Dallas (or maybe Ft. Worth), the
Budweiser POR, and the~season finale in Reno. The Michigan International will start with
a special stage in downtown Detroit and feature a 1,000 mile event. Northwest Rally Week
will find two events a week apart in Olympia, Washington with a parc ferme on the capitol steps.

There will be three categories of events this season. The first (Category A) will be
10 events counting for both driver's and manufacturer's championships. The second
(Category B) will count for drivers only -- probably three or four events. And finally,
(Category C or Divisional Events) will count no National points. For the drivers (and
co-drivers) they will count one half of all A and B events -- best score wins. Scoring
will once again be 1-20, 2-15, 3-12, 4-10, 5-8, 6-6, 7-4, 8-3, 9-2, 10-1. Points for
Production will be awarded separately.
