Press Notes #1
Rim of the World PRO Rally, Palmdale, California
Round #5 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
May 5, 1995 - 10:00 PM PDT

1. Welcome to the Antelope Valley/Southern California, and the Rim of the
World PRO Rally, round #5 of the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series.
The weather has been the great unknown for this season's national PRO
Rally tour, and teams arriving in the Palmdale area today have
discovered 50 degree and raining rather than the 80 degrees and hot we
are used to. In South Carolina in February, we had sleet and ice
instead of the 60's, and it was sunny and warm in Washington State two
weeks instead the steady downpour that usually accompanies that event.

2. Some last-minute adjustments to the entry list:

--The ex-Greg Lund Mazda 323GTX, now owned and driven by Steve Walker,
will be a no-show as the team could not fix engine problems suffered
from the Wild West Rally two weeks ago.

--The Chad Dykes Group 2 Toyota Pick-up will stay in Escondido this
weekend as Dykes and his engine builder cannot find the source of the
constant overheating which has plagued the truck from its
introduction in March. Heat/steam pockets inside the block might be
      the culprits.

3. The weeks between Wild West and Rim have brought other aggravations
    for competitors:

--Selcuk Karamanoglu, who broke a control arm on his Eagle Talon,
figured two weeks was plenty of time to have the junk yard he called
ship a replacement. He waited and waited, and when it didn't arrive,
he had to spend much more money having one shipped overnight from
Chrysler. Of course, as soon as the expensive one arrives, the cheap
      one arrived as well...

--Rui Brasil has lots of work to do on his Audi Quattro after his
rollover in Washington, and his San Jose-based team got it done in
record time. Unfortunately, the crew forgot to fasten the hood pins
when they went to take the car for a front-end alignment before
heading South, and the hood flew open on the road, damaging the roof
and breaking the windshield. Late word is that the car arrived early
this morning - fixed again - and will run the rally.

--The Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes Ruby's Diner Ford Escort GT car
underwent major suspension work after Ralph's off at the media stage
in Washington. Ralph's wrist - also injured in Washington - has been
taped for this event, but is almost healed.

--The Chris Weleff/Brian Paul Group A Toyota All-trac also had major
under-carriage work after they hit a tree stump in a ditch in
      Washington.

4. The big four - the Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker Hyundai Elantra, the Carl
Merrill/John Bellefleur Ford Escort Cosworth, the Peter Moodie/Michael
Fennell Mazda 323GTR, and the Henry Joy/Chris Griffin Mitsubishi
Eclipse - all scored stage wins in Washington, with Merrill winning six
stages, Choiniere five, Joy four, and Moodie (before he broke) two
    stages.

Choiniere, who has won this event the last three years, is leading the
championship so far after four events - winning all three he has
entered - in his new Hyundai. After winning the overall title the last
three years in an Audi Quattro, the John Buffum-owned Libra Racing team
hooked up with Hyundai America this season, and their efforts so far
    have been terrific.

The Peter Moodie/Michael Fennell Mazda has moved up to the Open class
from Group A, where they won the national championship a year ago.
This has given them a chance to run a less restrictive engine intake
and enables them to run with the top guys. They are the only team
besides Choiniere to win an event this season, edging Carl Merrill at
the Doo Wops event in Washington in March.

Merrill and Bellefleur have had a frustrating year, having nagging
mechanical problems which have hurt their efforts to reach the top
spot. They lost a turbo in Ohio, dropping them to fifth position, and
lost fourth gear at the Doo Wops early in the event.

Joy and Griffen are a new driving combination, with Chris joining the
team at the Doo Wop event. His best finish so far was a fine second
behind Choiniere in Washington, missing his first PRO Rally win by 25
    seconds.

5. Add the Tom Ottey/Pam McGarvey Mazda 323GTX to the mix, as they have
moved up from Production GT to Open for this year, anticipating
delivery of a Hyundai Elantra later in the season. Ottey scored a
second place finished at the Sand Hills rally earlier this season, and
was very competitive in Ohio, finishing seventh overall.

6. In the Production GT class, Karamanoglu - last year's class champion -
is the favorite, but finds himself trailing Janice Damitio in her
Toyota All-trac after four events. Janice won the class in
Washington - her home event - after Selcuk broke. Also in contention
is the Jason Priestley/Kevin Caffrey Toyota All-trac, which was running
close to Ms. Damitio before they ran into a ditch in Washington.
Priestley finished, but lost almost 30 minutes to the field.

7. In the Production class, Tad Ohtake has more points than anyone else
here this weekend in his ford Escort GT, but Lon Peterson and Bill
Gutzmann are debuting a new Kia Sephia - the Korean manufacturer's
first foray into motorsports in North America. The 1.8-litre, DOHC,
125 HP motor, combined with a strong chassis and independent front and
rear suspension, should make this a competitive Production car. Add to
this Peterson's extensive driving experience at Rim (and Ohtake's first
appearance here), and this should be an interesting battle.

8. The most populated class at the event it Group 2, where the Dave
White/Ben Greisler VW GTI hopes to add to its points lead. But White
is not as fast as Goran Ostlund and Steve Baker's Saab 99, which won
the class championship a year ago. Ostlund will not contend for the
title in '95, as his employer - Boeing Aircraft - has transferred him
to Estonia starting next month. Maybe he can run the 1000 Lakes of
    Finland...

On their tail will be the very fast and Rim-worthy Datsun 510 of Mike
Whitman/Kevin Linville, 1994 divisional champions and winners of the
Group 2 class at Doo Wops in March. Harris Done/Larry Scott's Mazda
RX-7 is also very fast with lots of Rim experience, so the Group 2
battle might be the best contest in the rally.

9. In Group A, the Chris Weleff/Brian Paul Toyota All-trac will be
challenged by the right-hand-drive Mazda 323GTX driven by the Tokyo,
Japan-based team of Makio Yamanaka/Fumiaki Yamazaki. This is Makio's
    third Rim event.

10. The Truck class title is Dave Turner's to win if he and co-driver Ben
Bradley can finish as the only class entry in the ex-Tony Shumaker
    Mitsubishi Pickup.

on Friday night (47 total entries - 2 divisional competitors will run
     on Saturday only).

12. After one stage, we have the following results:

   13. The two-minute-plus lead that Merrill/Bellefleur has put on the
field after only one stage seems like a typo, but it is a long,
13-mile stage that is mainly asphalt, and Merrill's 410 HP
outstrips the other top contenders by nearly 60 HP.

    14. We have a report that Jason Priestley/Kevin Caffrey's Toyota
Celica All-trac had an alternator problem on stage 2, and was
        unable to continue.

    15. Tom Ottey is reported sick and needed oxygen on stage #2, but the
husband/wife team of Ottey and Pam McGarvey is continuing.

Joy/Griffin are running a trouble-free event, but the others seem to be
having nagging problems. Moodie had a brake fire on stage #4, while
Merrill ran the last part of stage 5 on a flat tire. Choiniere lost a
windshield wiper, and then went through a large water crossing and
couldn't see for a mile or so on stage #5. The Hyundai was also not
running at the desired boost - a problem the crew hopes to correct in
  the morning.

The divisional results will be posted in the morning.

Press Notes #6
Rim of the World PRO Rally, Palmdale, California
Round #5 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
May 6, 1995 - 1:00 PM

20. The full day of rallying - eight stages - will start this morning from
the Antelope Valley Mall in Palmdale with a Parc Expose, with cars
leaving the Mall at 1:00 PM to head into the woods.

21. A tour of the top four competitors yielded the following information:

--The Carl Merrill/John Bellefleur Ford Escort Cosworth, which
finished the last two miles of stage #5 with a flat left-rear tire,
shredded the tire completely on the transit on the way back to the
hotel, leaving only the wheel and the sidewall. Otherwise, the
400hp Escort is running fine, and Carl is hungry for a national win.

--Murray Thomas, Henry Joy's crew chief, reports the car is running
perfectly, and Henry is continuing his torrid driving that had him
finishing only 25 seconds behind Choiniere. He and Carl Merrill are
in a flat-footed tie going into today's action.

--The Libra Racing team was busy replacing turbo hoses and checking
components on the Choiniere/Becker Hyundai Elantra after the car was
down on power during yesterday's event. Added troubles included a
broken driver windshield wiper arm, which caused problems when the
car hit a water crossing and paul couldn't see for almost a mile.

--The Peter Moodie/Michael Fennell Mazda 323GTX ran fine yesterday,
winning stages three and five after having a brake fire on the way
to stage #1 on the transit. The Mazda 323GTX of Tom Ottey/Pam
McGarvey stopped and helped the Jamaicans put out the flare-up.
Speaking of Ottey, he feels much better today after being sick in
the car last night, and hopes to improve on his seventh place
       position.

22. In the crowded Group 2 field, Goran Ostlund/Steve Baker in the Saab 99
holds a slim 30-second lead over Dave White/Ben Greisler in a VW GTI.
Mike Whitman/Kevin Linville in their Datsun 510 is running third, with
the Toyota Pickup of Matt Sweeney/Lucinda Strub fourth and the Volvo
240 of Bill Malik/Roine Anderson fifth. All five are veteran
rallyist, and have a shot at the Group 2 title.

23. In Production GT, with the Jason Priestley/Kevin Caffrey Toyota
All-trac out of the competition, the battle is between the Toyota All-
trac of Janice Damitio/Barry Berg - Wild West class winners - and
defending national champion Selcuk Karamanoglu/Constantine Mantopoulos
in their Eagle Talon. Selcuk's car has had a myriad of minor
mechanical ills, while Janice - a Rim rookie - was being cautious
during the rough night stages. Currently, Damitio leads Karamanoglu
by a little more than a minute.

24. In Group A, the Tokyo-based Mazda 323GTX of Makio Yamanaka/Fumiaki
Yamazaki is leading the Toyota All-trac of Chris Weleff/Brian Paul by
more than two minutes. The Dave Turner/Ben Bradley Mitsubishi Pickup
(an ex-Chad Dykes racer, not the ex-Tony Shumaker racer as earlier
stated) is running a respectable 16th overall and first (and only) in
     the truck class.

25. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the rally (besides the overall tie),
is the performance of the newly built and never raced Kia Sephia,
driving by Rim veterans Lon Peterson and Bill Gutzmann. The car is
currently ninth overall, despite its meager 125 horsepower, and is
winning the Production class by more than five minutes over Tad Ohtake
and Bob Martin's Ford Escort GT.

26. Tony Chavez/Jose Soria's Mitsubishi Eclipse, a local favorite, broke a
motor mount yesterday, slowing their progress. Chavez, who has always
been competitive here in an older Datsun 510, fixed the problem this
morning and hopes to improve his 19th overall position during today's
     stages.

27. 21 national cars and 24 divisional entries took the countdown at the
Antelope Valley Mall and headed into the Angeles National Forest near
Lake Hughes. There will a dinner break and service at Lake Hughes
Community Center at 5:40 PM, with the rally finishing back at the
Ramada Inn in Palmdale at approx. 11:00 PM.

Press Notes #7
Rim of the World PRO Rally, Palmdale, California
Round #5 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
May 6, 1995 - 4:30 PM

28. Reports from the course after seven stages showed Carl Merrill/John
Bellefleur leading Henry Joy/Chris Griffin by only one second, but
Paul Choiniere and Peter Moodie are closing in, but the story of this
rally has changed dramatically on stage #8. Merrill's Ford Escort
Cosworth - the rally leader - is out of the rally with his car parked
on the side of the road on stage #8. Although we do not know the
specific cause of the DNF, we do know there is no visible damage to
the car, so the reason must be mechanical. Merrill had lost his power
steering on stage 7, and was very tired at the end of the twisty
     stage.

After eight stages, Henry Joy leads the rally by less than a minute,
with Paul Choiniere and Peter Moodie hot on his tail. Moodie won
stages #6 and #8, while Choiniere beat Henry on stage #7 by less than
     a second.

29. Other DNFs (cause unknown) include:

--Tony Chavez/Jose Soria Mitsubishi Eclipse - Stage 7
--Roger Hull/Sean Gallagher Eagle Talon - Stage 7

30. Goran Ostlund/Steve Baker's Saab 99 is now running fourth overall and
first in Group 2 despite running over a rock large enough to put a
dent in the floor on stage #6.

31. The drama up front continues on stage #9, where rally leader Henry Joy
has lost the lead to Peter Moodie as the Mitsubishi Eclipse has broken
the left rear suspension. The car has finished stage #9, and will try
to make it to the major service so T.A.D. Motorsports can try to fix
the problem. Moodie beat Choiniere by 21 seconds on the stage, while
Joy lost more than a minute to both cars.

32. Group 2 contenders and Friday night Divisional winners Dave White/Ben
Greisler have stuffed their VW GTI into a dirt bank on stage #9, and
are trying to extract themselves before they are time-barred (30
minutes after the last car finished the stage.)

Round #5 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
May 6, 1995 - 11:00 PM

33. The 12th running of the Rim of the World PRO Rally - round #5
of the 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series - is now history, and Paul
Choiniere/Jeff Becker have scored the narrowest of victories - 11
seconds - in their Hyundai Elantra over the hard-charging Jamaican
team of Peter Moodie/Michael Fennell in their Mazda 323GTR. The Henry
Joy/Chris Griffin Mitsubishi Eclipse, which fixed its driveshaft and
became 4WD once again after stage 10, made a valiant run at the top
spot, but finished third, 17 seconds behind Moodie. Joy was as close
as five seconds behind Moodie late in the event.

Moodie had a 15 second lead over Paul with two stages to go, but a
miss in the Mazda engine gave Choiniere an opportunity to take the
lead. In addition to the windshield wiper and turbo problems
documented yesterday, Libra Racing had tried an experimental front
differential in the car, and team owner John Buffum admitted it didn't
work, causing Paul to work even harder to control the car.

Carl Merrill/John Bellefleur had been matching the other three stage
time for stage time until his car broke a tie-rod during stage 8,
exiting him from the event. Carl could only watch and wonder where he
might have finished as the other three battled it out.

The Tom Ottey/Pam McGarvey Red Roof Inns Mazda 323GTX maintained their
contact in the standings with a fourth place finish, while Goran
Ostlund/Steve Baker were fifth overall and first in Group 2 by 1:44
over the VW GTI of Dave Peterson.

In Production, the brand-new (two weeks old) Kia Sephia of Lon
Peterson/Bill Gutzmann tied for six overall with the Group 2 Peterson
(above) and won its class handily.

Janice Damitio/Barry Berg scored their second straight win in
Production GT in their Toyota All-trac when Selcuk
Karamanoglu/Constantine Mantopoulos' Eagle Talon was forced to
withdraw from the rally for personal reasons. Earlier in the event,
the Jason Priestley/Kevin Caffrey's Toyota All-trac lost an
alternator and was forced out of the event.

The Japanese Group A team of Makio Yamanaka/Fumiaki Yamazaki piloted
their Mazda 323GTX to the class win by more than eight minutes over
the Toyota All-trac of Chris Weleff/Brian Paul.

Finally, in the Rally Truck Class, Dave Turner/Ben Bradley survived
getting stuck while trying to pull Dave White (who was stuck) off a
rock to win the class as its only competitor.

THREE FINISH RIM ON SAME MINUTE; CLOSEST MICHELIN PRO RALLY EVENT IN YEARS

PALMDALE, Calif. -- May 7 -- Defending SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally champions
Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker, from Shelburne, Vermont, have scored the
narrowest of victories - 11 seconds - in their Hyundai Elantra over the
hard-charging Jamaican team of Peter Moodie/Michael Fennell in their Mazda
323GTR at the 12th running of the Rim of the World PRO Rally.

The "big four" of this season's field, Choiniere, Moodie, the
Henry Joy/Chris Griffin Mitsubishi Eclipse, and the Carl Merrill/John
Bellefleur Ford Escort Cosworth, were all running on the same minute late in
the event, which would through 115 miles of the Angeles National Forest in
Southern California.

Merrill's car fell out of the rally four stages from the end with a broken
tie-rod, and Joy lost a rear differential, leaving him with two-wheel-drive
only for almost two stages. Still, with two stages to go, it was Moodie by
15 seconds over Choiniere, and Joy only five seconds behind Moodie.

"Hyundai America got into this kind of racing to show the America public
that they make a durable car with good performance, and this event proved
it all," said Choiniere, who has won the national title four of the last
five years. "We jumped the car over water bars, sideswiped burms, powered
through ruts and over rocks, and strained the drivetrain to stay ahead of
the fierce competition - and we were able to come away with the win at what
is clearly the roughest event on the circuit."

It was Choiniere's fourth win in four tries this season, and widens his
points lead going into the sixth SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally event, scheduled
for Wellsboro, Penn., June 1 - 2.

Other Rim class winners included Janice Damitio/Barry Berg, Montesano,
Wash., Toyota All-trac (Production GT class); Makio Yamamaka/Fumiaki
Yamazaki, Tokyo, Japan, Mazda 323GTX (Group A class); Lon Peterson/Bill
Gutzmann, Victorville, Calif. Kia Sephia - the North American debut of Kia
(a Korean car maker) in motorsports; Goran Ostlund/Steve Baker, El Salvador,
Saab 99 (Group 2 class); and Dave Turner/Ben Bradley, Hemet, Calif.,
Mitsubishi Pickup (Rally Truck class).

In a PRO Rally, each team consists of a driver and a co-driver (or
navigator), and the exact course is kept secret until just before the
event - different from World Rally, where practice is allowed. The cars
start at one-minute intervals and race against the clock over 6 - 24
stages which range in length from four to 25 miles. Most of the rallies
include night stages, making it necessary for competitors to adjust their
driving style. Speeds of more than 120 miles-per-hour could be reached on
long straight-aways, with the team achieving the fastest combined times
 winning the event.

The 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series is sponsored by Michelin Tire
Corporation, with field administration by the American Rally Association,
and series sanction by the Sports Car Club of America. The 1995 Rim of
the World PRO Rally was presented by the California Sports Car Club
Region of the Sports Car Club of America and the Rim of the World Rally
 Committee.
