Friday Practice Stage Details Friday's practice stage provides an informal setting for interviews and photo opportunities for members of the working press to meet the stars of SCCA ProRally. A press caravan will depart from the Episcopal Church at 12:30 PM Sharp for the press stage location. All attending Press & VIPs must be credentialed prior to leaving for the stage. Please understand that this is not a closed "press" stage, but rather a working shakedown stage for the entrants. Rides for the press are not guaranteed, and will be handled purely on a request basis with drivers that have completed testing. Selected entries (driver/co-driver): Current Overall Drivers Championship points leader David Higgins (67 points), 2002 Subaru WRX. Current Manufacturer points leaders (55 MFG points) Mark Higgins and Michael Gibson in #5 car, former SCCA champions Paul Choiniere and Jeff Becker in #6 car, 2003 Hyundai Tiburons. 2001 Overall Driver and Manufacturer Champion Mark Lovell with Steve Turvey, 2002 Subaru WRX. 2001 Overall Driver's Championship runner up, Seamus Burke, returns for his first event since this year's Cherokee Trails Rally in March. Rhys Millen with Garry Cowan, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII - Millen has had a season full of highs and lows - now with a new car - expect to see the Pikes Peak champion turn up the heat. Additional news interest: Dust will, as is nearly always the case at STPR, be a huge factor in the outcome of the event, particularly in the events opening two stages, where, historically, the top finisher of those two stages goes on to win. Mother Nature, however, can also create major difficulties for teams in other ways: Last year's rainstorm that began at the second service completely changed much of the finishing order throughout the entire field with muddy roads that became slick as ice. The famous spectator-friendly but car-cruel Water Crossing at the end of SS1 often determines a number of rallyist's fortunes, with as much as 10% of the field retiring, sometimes in the creek! While Susquehannock Trail is geologically different in every way from last months Rim of the World, with its fast, smooth and well-groomed roads, the event does, none-the-less, also have a history of high attrition because of the narrow roads closely lined with big trees. With the Hyundai well in front of the Manufacturers Championship race, and independent David Higgins tearing up the Overall Driver's competition, expect absolutely flat-out driving and intense service area action as other teams, particularly Subaru/Prodrive and Mitsubishi, fight to close the gap. Press & VIP Credentials; Visuals, Interviews & Media information: Event Press/Photo and VIP credentials will be available at registration on Friday afternoon only, and for a very short period on Saturday morning. Access to press-only photo areas will require a Press Pass. Credentials are available only to members of the working press. Identification and/or proper work orders are required. Minors are not eligible for Press or VIP credentials. Action photography and video will be possible from spectator and press-only viewing areas along the rally course. Drivers, co-drivers and crew are accessible throughout the event, including the practice stage, the Friday evening welcome party, Parc Exposes and Services. Due to the very large geographic footprint of this event, Media Relations will only be able to provide event results and other information via e-mail post event. The press room phone number will be available on event day. The one-day event will be held on Pennsylvania state forest roads in the "Endless Mountains" to the South and West of Wellsboro. The rally starts Saturday morning, 01 June at 10:31 AM EST sharp, following an hour-and-a-half Parc Expose of all the performance rally cars entered. Late Breaking News: Weather: As was the case last year, late spring rains can play havoc with team event strategies. Some thunderstorms caused local flooding, and steady light rains have been falling in Wellsboro all week, with the forecast calling for more of the same well into Friday. While it is still possible that some drying out will occur by the start of the rally on Saturday, causing some stages to be dusty, others are expected to be extremely slick and dust free, keeping the rest of the pack in the hunt. Two year's ago, the famous Water Crossing at the end of SS1 was cancelled due to high water, but it appears that this year the stage will happen, as the water level is 'right at' the go/no go threshold. New to SCCA ProRally, but not new to extreme motorsport, is a family name familiar to motorsport fans worldwide - Robby Unser is expected to be making his performance rally debut this weekend, with veteran co-driver Ed Wahl. Slated to be driving an SCCA Open class Subaru Impreza, Unser is making the jump from the roundtrack circuits of the Indy Racing League to SCCA ProRally, with an eye at returning the Unser name to Pikes Peak when the SCCA ProRally Championship makes its series debut there on June 29. All three Open class works teams have been very busy since Round 4, Rim of the World, with Subaru perhaps the busiest. Mark Lovell's #1 car, which rolled heavily on Day 1 in California was returned to the Prodrive shops in the UK to be completely re-shelled. Ramana Lagemann's #2 car, which lost its motor on day 2, has a new drivetrain. Manufacturers' Championship leader Hyundai is confident that it has its early transmission teething problems licked, and is expected to run very strong this weekend on roads that suit both its drivers and the prodigious horsepower of their motors well. Mitsubishi, working an uphill developmental battle on Rhys Millen's all-new Lancer Evo VII, may be the dark horse this weekend. Seamus Burke, last years driver's championship runner up, with Rory Kennedy return to the SCCA ProRally Championship after a 3 month hiatus, and will no doubt be placing even more 'independent pressure on the works teams of Hyundai, Subaru and Mitsubishi. Currently, the Championship is lead by David Higgins, in the independently entered AV Sport Subaru WRX. In the 2001 season, Burke, in his TAD Motorsports Mitsubishi Lancer, kept the works teams on their toes all season long. Hall The STPR 2002 weekend kicked off today with the arrival of the competitors, inspections, and the practice stage. The three-mile stage was a relatively straight route with just a couple corners. The stage should prove to be a big help to those teams that participated as a variety of conditions greeted the drivers. The stage started at 1pm under overcast skies and presented a fast, but dusty course. The unpredictable weather that has become as much of a trademark for this event as the Stony Fork Creek Crossing then made an appearance. The skies opened up, first dropping rain, then hail that was over a centimeter in diameter. The competitors never took a break from the stage, racing in all conditions and getting a feel for the notoriously slick and fast roads that make STPR so exciting. Seven-time STPR champion Paul Choiniere says the biggest issue on the stage wasn't the slick roads but the fog. "Well when it's foggy you can't see, but neither can the guy in front of you so I guess it's ok, the worse the conditions get, the better it is for me, I am used to driving in this stuff(sic). Driver Jon Kemp of the number 80 Open class Audi was glad to see the chaotic weather, "we got a sample of all the conditions we see this weekend, that's very good." Many other competitors weren't as happy to see the roads get slick, drivers like Shane Mitchell, who is in a Subaru WRX for the first time after previously competing in an Eagle Talon remarked, "I am just trying to get used to the car, I'm not used to having brakes." Many drivers said they felt the stage was an invaluable opportunity to test the car and the roads, though all agreed they were running at about 80% in order to save the car for the start of the race tomorrow. The weather stayed calm and clear, a far cry from last year's torrential downpours, keeping rally speeds, and rally fans attention, way up. Key Notes: Excited fans packed the dense Pennsylvania woods from start to finish, and David Higgins, the soft spoken young man from England, with diminutive fellow countryman David Barritt co-driving, drove a flawless rally, keeping a resurgent Mark Lovell, the SCCA ProRally defending champion, at bay for the entire duration of this grueling event. Early on it appeared this rally might be Hyundai's big weekend, with David's brother Mark setting a blistering pace, or for Subaru, teams having challenging first halves of the season, were both back in top form. None of this mattered to the two Davids, who kept their focus on the road ahead, motored swiftly to the front early on, and stayed there. Electrifying stage times were set in the Pennsylvania forests due, in no small part, to 75 teams using stage notes. On the 5.96 mile Water Crossing stage alone, seven teams beat the record time of 5:25 set last year by Seamus Burke--including Mark Higgins, who did so by a blazing 24 seconds, posting an average speed on that stage of 71.4 miles per hour. Subaru's frustrating rallying luck continued as Ramana Lagemann's car had complete brake failure late in the evening. Team manager David Campion wisely chose to park Lagemann rather than risk a crash, banking on Lovell's fierce but calculating drive to bring home a fine finish - which he did, along with much needed manufacturer and driver championship points. The Mitsubishi camp battled some early overheating problems in Rhys Millen's all new Lancer Evolution VII, the car steadily improving throughout the event, helping him secure a solid 5th overall finish, and much needed Drivers and Manufacturers points. Lauchlin O'Sullivan continues to build on his lead in Group 2, the US spec two wheel drive Lancer doing exceptionally well on its first trip to northeastern US rally turf. Paul Choiniere earned his first finish of the season, and not a moment too early. With teammate Mark Higgins' Tiburon out with head gasket woes after setting a significant new record at the Water Crossing stage, The Libra Racing Hyundai Team threw all of its resources at ensuring a solid finish for the 8-time champion. Running a conservative, but competitive strategy, and battling some overheating woes of his own, Choiniere, with substitute co-driver John Bennie, came home in 6th. Mark Nelson continues to impress all as one of the fastest rising US independent drivers, who with veteran co-driver Charles Bradley bravely hanging on, banged off more than one large tree in the PA forests, finishing with a very tattered looking Lancer, but with a very respectable 3rd place overall. With one of the largest fields ever assembled in the US, the rapidly expanding Group N category this time was dominated by Canadian visitors - Peter Thomson and Keith Townsend, who kept the group of exotic Lancers and WRX STi's behind them the entire rally. With Gr N series regulars Peter Workum and Jason Rivas out with mechanical troubles, and Central US favorites the Krolikowskis on their roof, the tight battle for 2nd place was between 4 Subaru's - Shane Mitchell, Mark Utecht, Ralph Kosmides and Peter Malaszuk, the latter surviving a late rally roll to soldier on with a 15th place finish. Backfield in motion: A slew of rallyists who started towards at the back of the field showed that they have what it takes for an excellent finish at a demanding event. Eion McGeough, in PGT showed considerable moxie, rising all the way from 51st in start position to finish 9th overall. Other notables who rose up for a superb finish were: Patrick Lilly (33rd to 10th), Shane Mitchell (32nd to 11th), Lauchlin O'Sullivan (41st to 14th), Julien Pilon (55th to 18th), William Bacon (58th to 19th) and Craig Peeper (48th to 22nd). The Overall Manufacturers Points race has closed since Rim of the World: Hyundai is at 61 points, Subaru at 52, and Mitsubishi with 37. In the Group 2 Manufacturers Points, Mitsubishi has extended its lead considerably, now standing at 80 points with Mazda at 56. David Higgins' fourth straight overall victory puts him at a commanding 87 driver's points, with Mark Lovell in second at 59, Mark Higgins at 55, Mark Nelson at 37, and Rhys Millen in fifth at 33.
