History of the STPR
Susquehannock Trail Pro Rally
Rochester, New York has always been a very active area for Rallying. In the 1960's and early 70's the local Rochester clubs presented two annual performance night rally events, run out of Rochester, down into the Finger Lakes area of the State. These events were part of the M.O.N.Y. series (Michigan, Ohio and New York) and were the forerunner of the Pro Rally series as we know it today. Even though these events were mainly held at night on remote roads, using a set average speed, they did often attract the attention of the local police and the occasional resident.
The route instructions might have indicated an average speed of only 49 mph, but careful adjustment of the odometer factor by the Rally Master often boosted the actual average speed well into the 50's. In those days there were no separation of transits and stages - it was more like one big stage on open roads. To increase the average speed even more, you had to stop at the controls, get your time, get back in the car and leave. The perfect time for a control was usually on the 55 second mark, and your out time was the top of the minute you entered. It was often almost impossible to make the required speeds, especially for the Snowblower, which was run in similar ice and snow conditions to that of the Maine Forest Rally. These events were run from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and were around 500 miles long, with the only service a gas sta tion about every 150 miles.
The last of these events to be run out of Rochester, was in 1972, and while the exact reason they were not held anymore is not know, it was probably a combination of pressure from the authorities, lack of insurance, and lack of National organization.
In the next few years a conversion to stage events was beginning to take place around the country. There was a desire of the Rochester rally following to join this conversion, but a major road block in New York State, was a law that was on the books, which banned the use of the roads for motorsport racing. This law was put into place after a spectator was killed at Watkins Glen in the early '50's, during an annual race there, which was run through the streets of the town in the days prior to the track being built. In 1975-6, a SCCA Finger Lakes Region member by the name of Bill Leathersich, tried to restart the night performance rallies, but when he found that the interest was not there, he turned to starting to organize a stage event. He found that Pennsylvania did not have a law regarding motorsports, and also found that there were an abundance of great rally roads in the forests just south of New York State. Bill made some great selections in those early days, many of the roads we use today were found by him and of course probably the most important choice was that of selecting Wellsboro to be the Headquarters of the Rally. From that starting point the relationship between the Finger Lakes Region and Wellsboro has grown to point now where the Rally is jointly organized by two committees, one in Wellsboro and one in Rochester.
In May 1977 the first Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally, or as it is mainly known today, STPR, was held. In those early days, it was the members of the Rochester clubs such as, Triumph Touring Club, Corvair Owners Club, MG Car Club, SCCA and several others, that worked together to get that all important first event off the ground.
From these beginnings, the event has grown to become one of the "Classic" PRO Rallies in the country, winning the "Top" PRO Rally award an unprecedented three times, in 1983, 1988 and 1990. Both the Finger Lakes Region members and the Community of Wellsboro, are proud to say this is our event.

Spectating The STPR
How To Do It Safely
PRO Rallying is called the most exciting and demanding of motor sports. It has also been one of the most difficult for the spectator to get to and watch - except at STPR '95. While some of the three STPR '95 spectator points are not in your backyard, you can be assured of seeing real Rally action, not something staged in a parking lot or industrial park just to attract a little publicity. Instead, we give you two exciting morning stages within a short drive of Wellsboro, including the Asaph Picnic Area, called by many the best spectator spot in North America. Safety at these spectator points is all important, especially with the large crowds expected this year. It really is just a matter of common sense, but for you folks who have never viewed a PRO Rally before, here are a few helpful tips.
Please follow the Spectator Marshals' directions at each spectator point. While spectating is free, we do have control over these areas. Our marshals are specially trained to recognize potentially hazardous areas and keep will people out of them for their own safety.
Please follow the marshal's directions when parking your car at these points. We must keep a clear access on one side of these narrow roads for emergency vehicles. All cars should park on the same side of the road and be heading in the proper direction to leave the area. If you follow the next rule you shouldn't have to walk too far.
Plan your spectating. Travel time to get to each of the three spectator points is listed in this program.
Pick your vantage point carefully. High on a hill or behind the tree line is best. The worst place to stand is on the outside of a corner or in the ditch. Rally drivers make creative use of the whole road. Again listen to the marshals. They know the safe spots. You must remain behind the Banner tape at all times.
Be wary and alert at all times, particularly at the daylight spectator points. The cars make far less noise than they once did. At night, their lights will warn you they are on the way, but in daylight, you might now know until it's too late.
Do's and Don'ts for the Spectator
DO....
follow instructions. Meeting a rally car head on can be an extremely unpleasant and possibly fatal experience.
obey speed limits. Local residents will appreciate it.
take your trash out of the forest with you.
obey marshalls at the Spectator Points. The marshals are here for your protect ion.
enjoy STPR '95 !!
DON'T .....
forget your camera.
point your flash at approaching competitor cars. You should start clicking only when they are alongside or going away from you.
block driveways or access roads.
litter. Please leave the Forest cleaner than you found it.
build any fires except in fireplaces provided by the Bureau of Forestry.
violate Pennsylvania liquor laws!
STPR '95 Spectator Points are:
(SPA) Stony Fork Creek Crossing.
(SPB) Asaph Picnic Area.
(SPC) Ridge / Wilson Point Roads.
HOW TO GET TO SPECTATOR AREAS
So that you may safely view the action at some of our more spectacular locations, we have arranged for three Spectator Points which will provide exciting viewing. STPR safety marshals, in addition to Forestry personnel and State Police, will be overseeing parking and safety zones in these areas (which are all in the State Forests). Be sure to stay within the designated areas and remember that no alcoholic Beverages are permitted within any state forest.
Helpful Hints
All route instructions for Spectator points start at the "Green" in the center of Wellsboro. Readable materials on signs will appear in quotes. Four-digit State Routes, such as SR3008, are identified by fairly small white signs (12" high by 18" wide). It is often necessary to stop and look for them. Township roads, such as East Shambaker, are identified by larger green signs with white lettering. These signs may be some distance up the road from the intersections and, to make it more difficult, the road name is at the extreme bottom of the sign. Forest roads, such as West Rim, are identified by fairly large rustic brown wooden signs, with the name engraved in the wood and (usually) filled with white paint. Remember, due to differences in odometers, your mileage could be more or less than the official mileage shown with these directions.
Warning
Choose only one spectator point (Water Crossing or Asaph) in the morning. You will not have time to make both! There is only one spectator point at night (Ridge / Wilson Point Roads) but the cars will loop through the area two different times. The road at Stony Fork Campground will be closed to all traffic at 10:00 am. To get to the spectator area you must be here before that time. Please Note: The Stony Fork Creek Crossing is a traditional favorite, Again this year, we have a special problem. The bridge at the southern end of the Stony Fork Road, about 1.2 miles from the Crossing, remains torn down. You will not be able to approach the Creek Crossing from Route 414, instead, you will have to use the Stony Fork Road (SR3005).
Spectator Area Descriptions
Stony Creek - SPA
The cars approach this spectator area from a downhill straight into a tricky 90 degree right hand turn followed by a 90 degree left turn, immediately before the water crossing. The cars approach the right hand turn very fast and over the years this corner has been the downfall of many cars. The ones that don't make the turn, bounce off the trees or go over the small bank before coming to rest against trees further down.
The downhill part of the stage is densely wooded and quite dark, so that the driver's vision is affected by the bright sunlight when the cars break out of the trees to cross the water. There are different techniques used in crossing the creek successfully. One method is not to brake and so try to aquaplane across the top of the water. Another method is to brake before the water and drive slowly through it. An often fatal method is to brake hard as you enter the water, making the nose of the car to dip down, allowing water to flow into the engine compartment and often into the engine.
While all spectators would like the cars to speed through the water, the drivers keep reminding themselves that this is the first stage, the rally cannot be won on the basis of this stage, but, it can easily be lost by swamping the engine. Watch out for the quick actions of the 4x4 crew, who are standing by ready to extract any rally car that does not make it across, before the next car enters the water!
ASAPH - SPB
The ASAPH spectator area is at the junction of three roads in a valley, where the hills provide a natural amphitheater for spectators. The cars will approach this spectator area from the West, first crossing an "up and over" bridge and then about a tenth of a mile later, before the junction, they will cross another narrow bridge which does not have any guard rails. Immediately after this bridge the cars must turn left at the road junction and start climbing out of the valley. There is a lot going on in a short distance, which with the setting makes this a great spectating area. This stage is called Phasa Run this year - when it is run in the other direction it is called Asaph Run. Makes sense doesn't it - Phasa is Asaph backwards.
Ridge - Wilson Point - SPC
The Ridge - Wilson Point spectator area is at the junction of three roads that meet forming a grassy centered triangle. The rally cars are required to go around the triangle in an anti-clockwise direction, to provide the maximum exposure for spectating. The cars approach this junction at high speed and must first make a right turn followed by an acute left turn. It is difficult to judge your speed for this acute and often the drivers over do it much to the pleasure of the spectators. While there are trees all around the triangle, the spectators are afforded a good view of the action as the triangle only contains on tree. The cars will come past this point early in the evening and then later at night, to give you two chances of seeing the action.
Stage Descriptions
Stage 1 STONY CROSSING
The surface is very solid, the first 4.5 miles are fairly flat, with nicely linked curves, ending in a crest over shale rock to the sideroad at 4.46 miles. From that intersection, the stage runs steeply downhill through a hairpin left to Bergeron's curve, which is a blind right with a culvert and rocky outcropping on the inside. Beware, this corner has ended the rally for more than a few cars. Then quickly on to the famous WATER CROSSING, for which you will have to use your own strategy to pass the finish flag in the middle of the stream. Many cars have been put out in previous years by not taking into account the water - the depth on Saturday morning will be posted on the Official Noticeboard - take note! After the water the road turns a little to the left before you go left at T after the water !!!
Stage 2 PHASA RUN
The first half of this stage is very fast, as it has a deceptively gradual descent down a wooded valley, along a stream to the spectator. This section has nice flowing curves, with a firm clay surface that can be slippery if wet. The deep gutters and soft road edges have claimed their victims over the years. There are two wooden bridges at the spectator area, which have provided many thrills to the crowds. The stage then twists and climbs out of the valley over a firm road surface with some shale, onto several very fast straighter sections which take you out of the woods. After a "vista" turn you reenter the woods to finish.
Stage 3 LEE HOLLOW
This stage is the reverse running of the last stage of our event. The stage runs from a valley on one side of a hill, over the top and down to the bottom of the next valley. The stage starts straight and narrow, but soon becomes twisty as it climbs with two VERY acute uphill switch- backs and a couple of other tight turns to keep you on your toes. It has mainly a hard clay surface that can be slippery if wet. The last 1.5 miles is wider, straighter and very fast.
Stage 4 RIM RUN
This stage starts in a switchback and then follows the canyon Southward, on a smooth, wide mainly clay surface which is very fast. The surface can become slippery and muddy with rain, with ruts developing if the rain has been extensive. The stage has a lot of nicely linked turns and is a pleasure to drive. Unfortunately the stage had to be shortened by 2 miles this year, due to requests from the residents.
Stage 5 GREEN SPRING I
This stage has been run in reverse for several years - the records are for that. The first 5 miles runs down a valley over a clay surface that is narrow in places, with a couple of deceptive corners. It can a little rutty and slippery if wet and has some wooden bridges to keep you on your toes. The next 6 miles begins with an acute left to cross a narrow bridge onto a better and wider road surface of gravel and cinders. It has some interesting turns on its slow climb to the spectator area at the pipeline crossing, which is in a clearing in the woods. Soon after the spectator area, the stage goes onto a narrow clay road that usually has ruts on the way down the valley. A hairpin left puts you onto a road with a level gravel surface with nice flowing curves for the last 3 miles.
Stage 6 FRANCIS RUN I
The first 3 miles is run over a good graveled surface with nice flowing curves down to a bridge and an acute left. The road changes to a firm forest clay surface for the next 5 miles, which is fast with some very tight turns, which are even more tricky if it is wet. The stage then straightens somewhat and the surface becomes even better, making it very fast for the rest of the stage. A great stage that blends together a lot of STPR quality. Enjoy it! We shall return
Stage 7 CEDAR POINT I
This stage starts with a flat smooth clay surface for 2 miles, before climbing up through some tight turns over a rock base surface, to a left at sideroad. Shortly hereafter, you will come to a spectator area at which you take the long way around a grassy triangle with a tree in the middle. The stage continues with a firm clay surface, along the ridge with a lot of nicely linked curves, before passing the site of the old fire tower, after which it drops into a difficult left hander !!!, at the timing line. A great drivers stage.
Stage 8 GREEN SPRING II
As this is the second running of this stage tonight, you should have it down pat and be able to set a better time. A hairpin left puts you onto a road with a level gravel surface with nice flowing curves for the last 3 miles
Stage 9 FRANCIS RUN II
This is again the second running of this stage tonight, often the fog or rain make the running different from the first run.
Stage 10 CEDAR POINT II
This the second running of this stage tonight - there could be fog now, making it look different.
Stage 11 BEAR HOLLOW
The first 3 miles run over a good graveled surface with nice flowing curves down to a bridge and an right. It then winds along a valley floor over a good stone surface, often close to a stream. The stage has nice linked turns and is very fast in places. Towards the end you will pass the bump where J.B. came spectacularly airborne, a few years back when the stage was run in reverse. Another great one.
Stage 12 MINE RIM
The first 4 miles twists and climbs up a valley on a gravel surface, which then straightens until the "T" at the top of the ridge. Where is my 6 th gear! After the turn, the stage changes to a wider smooth clay surface and runs over the stage 4 roads in reverse. A very fast stage that can be slippery if wet.
Stage 13 PAINTER RUN
This is the night-time running of Stage 3. The stage is smooth, wide and fast for the first 1.5 miles, then it narrows, with tight turns combined with some high speed straights. The 2 VERY acute downhill switchbacks, the rapid changes in elevation, combined with the lateness of the hour, make this a challenging stage to finish the rally.

Rallyists From Around the World Converge on Wellboro
In the sport of PRO Rally, parity has hit because of the hard work of the rest of the field to bring themselves up to the level of four-time defending champion Paul Choiniere. Although Paul is still getting used to his new car - a 350 horsepower Hyundai Elantra - and he is still leading the series, the Shelburne, Vermont resident sees the future of the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series changing, and he likes what he sees.
"When John Buffum and Rod Millen dominated our sport in the '80s, there was great competition between them, but not among the rest of us. Some people have thought that our team was headed in the same direction with four straight national titles, but this year, things are different," said Choiniere. "I haven't slowed down any with my Hyundai, but the rest of the field has caught up, both with fast equipment and driving skill, and PRO Rally events are now truly up for grabs," he said.
For example, in the April event in Washington State, Choiniere and co-driver Jeff Becker won only five of the 16 racing stages, and never won any stage by more than 10 seconds. In fact, four different drivers were fastest on particular stages - almost unheard-of in past years. A usual Choiniere victory used to be four or five minutes; this year, his margins of victory have been 29 seconds, 30 seconds, and 44 seconds. At the STPR event, no less than ten cars could win the rally, making Choiniere's domination a thing of the past.
And all the new cars making their first appearance at STPR has made organizer John McArthur more excited than ever. "The top ten cars develop between 300 and 400 horsepower, and should reach more than 120 miles-per-hour on the straight-aways in the Pennsylvania State Forests," said McArthur. Familiar drivers - new cars As mentioned, favorite Paul Choiniere is a familiar sight in his #1 racer, but the Audi Quattro which brought him so much success has been replaced by a new Hyundai Elantra. The Libra Racing team has been developing this car for the past six months, and Choiniere hopes this 340 horsepower, all-wheel- drive turbo racer is ready for prime time Right on his heels will be another new European-style rally car - the Ford Escort - Cosworth of Carl Merrill, from Ogunquit, Maine. Merrill, a favorite here last year, disapp ointed rally fans when a coolant hose popped 200 yards into the first stage, and he had to nurse the car to the finish of the stage - losing three minutes which could not be made up. Merrill sports the fastest rally car in North America, developing over 400 horsepower with a seven-speed gearbox. Other favorites to contend for the overall victory include the new right- hand-drive Mitsubishi Lancer of Henry Joy, from Atlanta, Mich.; the Eagle Talon of Doug Shepherd, from Plymouth, Mich.; the Mazda 323 GTX of Peter Moodie, from Kingston, Jamaica; Moodie's chief rival in Jamaica, Chris Issa, in a Mitsubishi Galant VR-4; and Bruno Kreibich, America's oldest active race car driver - in his late '60s - in an Audi Quattro.

Medford, NJ Philadelphia, PA # # # Press Notes #1 Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania Round #6 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series June 1, 1995 - 10:00 PM 1. Welcome to Tioga County - home of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and the State Laurel Festival - and the 19th running of the Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally, round #6 of the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series. The weather in Wellsboro on Wednesday and Thursday has been magnificent - sunny and warm with highs in the '80s. The weekend - when the rally takes place - looks less promising, however, with a low pressure system from the Midwest bringing moist air across Pennsylvania tonight and tomorrow. Friday will bring showers and thunder showers, with some downpours likely. Rain will continue Friday night and into early Saturday. The forecast for Saturday late morning - the rally starts at 11:00 AM - calls for variable cloudiness with a chance of showers, with thunderstorms likely by afternoon. 2. The immediate effect of this moisture on the rally is the famed creek crossing at Stony Fork - the end of stage #1. If the water is more than 8" deep, organizer John McArthur will be forced to cancel the stage as high water can lead to excessive water being ingested by the race engines. How high the creek rises by race time is a combination of cumulative rains over the past several weeks, and rains just before the rally begins. The positive effect of the rain will be the lack of dust on the course - a welcome relief from past years of poor visibility. 3. Some late-breaking news: --The debut of the Henry Joy/Chris Griffin right-hand-drive Mitsubishi Lancer has again been delayed as late parts have caused the T.A.D. team to run their Eclipse instead at STPR. The way Henry has been driving in the Eclipse, however, he probably has more potential to do well in his old car than in an untested mount. --Ditto for the Hyundai Elantra belonging to Executive Motors destined for Columbus, Ohio and the Red Roof Inns team of Tom Ottey and Pam McGarvey. According to McGarvey, the car was to clear customs in Miami today, and they hope to get their hands on it late next week. Meanwhile, they are here this weekend in "Mr. Mazda." --Due to a death in the family, Sandra Latreille will be not be co- driving for Jon Kemp in the Audi Quattro. We understand Kemp has a replacement signed up, and we will pass along that name as soon as we get it. --Not so lucky was Peter Malaszuk, who could not find anyone to co- drive with him in a Group A Mitsubishi Galant. Malaszuk has scratched from the event. --Doug Shepherd was scheduled to run this event in his Eagle Talon, but was forced to withdraw due to his work schedule. 4. Rusty Campbell, who has served as rally co-organizer for this event for the past eight years, stepped down over the winter to concentrate on his Rochester-area heating and cooling business. John and Donna Robinson continue to serve as the rally operations heads, while committee member and 1994 Production GT co-driving champion John McArthur has assumed Rusty's duties. 5. This is the fourth SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally being run in eight weeks, involving a round trip across the country and a 1800-mile commute from Olympia, Washington to Los Angeles. For those competitors at the top, blown engines and transmissions have been replaced, broken suspensions fixed, and cracked body parts left behind to keep the cars running from one event to the next. Eight of the top ten points leaders overall are here this weekend, with six of them having a chance to win the rally, and a seventh "guest" also a threat to win overall. --The "guest" is the Canadian team of Frank Sprongl/Dan Sprongl in an Audi Quattro S-2, which insiders say has more horsepower than the similar model in which Paul Choiniere dominated the series over the past two years. Sprongl is perhaps one of the most improved drivers in the sport in the last year, and he hopes to follow up his win at the Maine Forest Rally in December with a win here at STPR. Sprongl is also the defending Canadian National Champion and North American Rally champion. --But the story of this season has been the Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker Hyundai Elantra. Since Sprongl beat Choiniere by a mere five seconds in December when Paul debuted the Elantra, he and Becker have reeled off four straight wins, including the last three nationals at Sunriser (Ohio), Wild West (Washington) and Rim of the World (California). And those wins have been the toughest in his career as Henry Joy, Peter Moodie, Tom Ottey, Bruno Kreibich, Carl Merrill, and Doug Shepherd have been pressuring him all the way. With only minor teething problems, the Hyundai Elantra has proven it can go the distance in the heat of all-out competition, and Choiniere can go a long way towards his fourth straight national title with a win here this weekend. --For the Carl Merrill/John Bellefleur team, one can only label this season "disappointing" so far. If you look a comparative stages times versus the drivers mentioned above, you would think Merrill was leading the series. Flat tires cost him time at Wild West and Sunriser. A broken tie-rod caused a DNF at Rim. Loss of fourth gear early in the rally cost him a shot at Doo Wops (the 60 percenter in Washington). But a win here in his 400 horsepower Ford Escort Cosworth could heal many of those wounds, and give him a shot at the title going into the last three events. --For the Henry Joy/Chris Griffin Mitsubishi Eclipse team, the bittersweet experience of waiting for their new Lancer to be finished has been overshadowed by the terrific rallies they have run in the last eight weeks. They have won stages all out against the best drivers, and have moved into second place in the overall standings, two points ahead of Peter Moodie. Joy was in a position to contest the rally at Rim when his front differential broke, yet his still finished third, on the same minute with Moodie and Choiniere. He was only 25 seconds behind Paul at Wild West, beating the Hyundai on several stages. If anyone's due to win this weekend, it's Henry. --Peter Moodie and Michael Fennell, in the Kingston, Jamaica-based Executive Motors Mazda 323GTR, are the only team besides Choiniere to win an SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally event, capturing the Doo Wops in Olympia in March by 44 seconds over Carl Merrill. But Moodie has also been in a position to win both at Sunriser and Rim when late- rally engine trouble cost him wins. At Wild West, suspension failure lead to a DNF. But, like Henry and Carl, Peter has been running too fast not to win one of these next events. --The two "long shots" in the top seven are the Audi Quattro team of Bruno Kreibich/Rod Hendricksen and the Mazda 323GTX team of Tom Ottey/Pam McGarvey. Bruno, who has probably run this rally for all 19 years of its history, was third behind Choiniere and Ottey at Sand Hills (South Carolina) and was in the fight for the overall lead in Ohio until his windshield became smeared late in the rally and he couldn't see. Ottey, who moved up from Production GT to score Open class points in anticipation of the arrival of his Elantra, has run all year with the top pack, including his second at Sand Hills.

Medford, NJ Philadelphia, PA # # # Press Notes #2 Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania Round #6 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series June 2, 1995 - 11:00 PM 6. In typical PRO Rally fashion, we have the following co-driver news to report: --Frank Arruda, Vinnie Frontinan's regular co-driver, couldn't make it this weekend, so Frank Cunningham, a veteran driver from Boston who came to the event to spectate, will co-drive for Vinnie. More on Vinnie's car later. --Janice Damitio and her co-driver from the first several events - Barry Berg - have parted company, and Janice will have veteran Jim Miner co-driving for her. More on her effort later. --Berg was going to co-driver for Peter Watt, but instead hooked up with David Ralakis and Watt found spectator Dick Casey - an experienced STPR driver - to run with him. 7. A news release from METRO RallyeSport, the team which owns the Toyota Celica AllTrac driven last year by Vinnie Frontinan and Frank Arruda, announced that driver Bruce Newey and co-driver Charles Bradley will be entering the Group A car in the remaining 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally events. Newey, who was the first competitor to build a car specifically to the Group 2 rules (a Mazda RX-7), is a New Zealand ex- patriot now living in Atlanta. The car will be prepared by car builder and racer David Payne at Payne's shop in Atlanta, with assistance from Payne's-sometimes co-driver and fabrication specialist Mike Bryant. Newey and Bradley ran together in the RX-7 last year, and Newey also drove Tony Takaori's right-hand-drive Mitsubishi Galant - his only experience in four-wheel-drive rallying - last year at Ojibwe. 8. Meanwhile, Vinnie Frontinan and Frank Cunningham will be running a Production class Toyota Corolla owned by former rallyist and national safety steward John Ricker. 9. In a surprise development, Carl Merrill brought his newly completed Open class Chevy S-10 pick-up to STPR to show off and to "test" at the organizer's designated practice stage. The familiar lavender-and-white paint job adorns this new vehicle, which looks more like a custom street truck than a "baaad" off-road vehicle. But, don't be fooled. Underneath the immaculate paint job is a frame constructed from 1/4" steel, and the following specifications: Length: 140 inches 3 Brakes: GM/Corvette Width: 60 inches 3 Tires: Michelin XGT Height: 52 inches 3 Rally Tires Wheelbase: 100.4 inches 3 Electrics/Lights: MSD/GM/PIAA Weight: 2,500 pounds Engine: Chevrolet Bowtie V-6, 291 cu. in. Power: 456 HP @ 7,200 RPM Torque: 470 FT/LBS @ 5,900 RPM Transmission: ATI turbo 400 (automatic) Suspension: GM with Carrera Shocks 10. Here's a quick run through the classes: --Group A - This class got off to a slow start over the first couple of events as several of last year's competitors have either moved up in class or are not running this year. But there are two legitimate Group A contenders at this event. Besides Newey/Bradley, the 1994 runner-up for the class championship a year ago - the Rick Davis/Ben Greisler BMW M-3 - will be competing in the class for the first time in 1995. Whoever wins will tie Makio Yamanaka, the Tokyo-based Mazda 323GTX driver who won last month at Rim of the World, for the points lead. --Production GT - By virtue of her stunning victories at Wild West and Rim of the World, Janice Damitio vaulted to a large lead in the class, and has come to Pennsylvania for her first non- West Coast event in her Toyota AllTrac. Janice, who might have an even larger lead had she now gone off the road late in the rally at the Doo Wops, is 31 points ahead of Cal Landau's Mitsubishi Eclipse, which will challenge her this weekend. Selcuk Karamanoglu and Jason Priestley - third and fourth in the standings - are not here this weekend. David Ralakis, in the ex-Carl Merrill Mazda 323GTX, is here, and he currently holds down fifth place in the standings. --Production - Tad Ohtake/Bob Martin's Ford Escort GT team was the only one to make the Wild West/Rim West swing, and, although they had two hard weekends ("everything in the car broke at least once"), they accumulated a lot of points have a commanding lead over Jim Anderson's Honda Prelude VTEC and Bob Elliott's VW GTI. Ohtake and Elliott should run neck and neck here, with the Preludes of Jim Anderson and Greg/Sonia Trepetin challenging. The great unknown factor will be the Vinnie Frontinan Toyota. Vinnie might be the fastest driver in the class, but he has not rallied since last September, and his car is almost 20 years old. --Group 2 - With the top four points leaders (Dave White, Bill Malik, Dave Peterson, and Mike Whitman) all West Coast drivers who are not here, the Sam Bryan/Rob Walden Saab 900 has to be the favorite for this event. The Kurt Thiel/George Thompson VW GTI, which won at Sunriser, is a contender, along with the Damon Meyers/Phil Barnes, Toyota Corolla. Gerry Sweet/Stuart Spark in a Saab 99, and Pete Lahm/Jimmy Brandt in a Datsun 510. An interesting entry is the Walter Stone/Tim O'Neil VW GTI, as O'Neil, a two-time former class champion - and the only Production driver ever to win a PRO Rally event overall - will be making his first rally appearance in several years. Rally Truck - no entries 11. The final entries show 36 national and 9 divisional entries, for a total of 45 cars starting tomorrow in downtown Wellsboro. Many STPR mid-packers (L. Mark Stone, Dick Casey, Keith Kreisler, etc.) are not here, with some top runners like Selcuk Karamanoglu (broken transmission) missing as well. We had one disappointing late withdrawal - Frank Sprongl called and reported tow vehicle problems will force him to miss the STPR event. 12. Reports from the "practice" stage included: --The Carl Merrill/John Bellefleur Chevy S-10 Open class pick up - not entered this weekend - made its rally debut anyway, and "went like stink" down the straightaway, but too-soft springs caused the truck to mishandle, with Merrill spinning out, but not causing any damage. --The Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker Hyundai Elantra was reported to have some shifting problems - something the Libra Racing crew will work on overnight. Press Notes #3 Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania Round #6 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series June 3, 1995 - 2:00 PM 13. 44 cars started the 19th edition of the Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally - one less than the number of entries as divisional entry car #108 - the Raymond Jannelli/John Yue Ford Escort - is running the evening divisional only. The report from the end of stage #1 -the famous Stony Fork water crossing - is that all 44 cars finished stage #1 with only a few stalls and tows from the creek. 14. The only DNF as a direct result of the water crossing was the Datsun 510 of Pete Lahm/Jimmy Brandt, which ingested too much water and blew its engine. Other DNFs in the early stages have included: --Kotowski/Bulaj Eagle Talon --McIvor/Santargcangelo Pontiac LeMans --Fry/Kennedy Subaru Legacy --Brann Lippman Subaru 4X4 15. The Vinnie Frontinan/Frank Arruda Toyota Corolla was running well in the Production class when it overshot a corner and headed for a patch of ferns on stage #3. Vinnie thought he had enough room to go through the ferns and back on the road, but the ferns were hiding a large stump, and the left front suspension, control arm, tie-rod and strut were all damaged, causing a DNF. 16. The Peter Moodie/Bob Thelwell Mazda 323GTR (Thelwell - a member of the Jamaican team - was a last-minute fill-in for Michael Fennell, who could not make the event) had brake problems on stage #4, and locked up his wheels at a sharp corner. The Mazda rolled twice before landing on its wheels, and Moodie was on his way - losing about one minute to the field. 17. An addition to the entry list - the Lesley Suddard/Anne Thomas Dodge Charger is running for divisional as well as national points. 18. Carl Merrill/John Bellefleur Ford Escort Cosworth lost 30 seconds to the field on stage #1 when one of his twin fuel pumps died, causing loss of power. The team fixed the problem, and Merrill has been running well since. 19. The Bruno Kreibich/Rod Hendricksen Audi Quattro is running very well despite being down on power as a result of too small a turbo installed on the car. Bruno had order the correct turbo for the car, but the wrong size came from the factory, and he estimated this is costing him 30 horsepower. # # # Press Notes #4 Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania Round #6 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series June 3, 1995 - 8:00 PM 20. Merrill owns the narrowest of leads - 1.2 seconds over Henry Joy, with Choiniere and Kreibich lucking on the same minute. Moodie has fallen back because of his rollover, with the Pat Ayer/Diane Houseal Audi Quattro (the '92 Paul Choiniere national championship car) stepping up into fifth place. Press Notes #8 Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania Round #6 - 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series June 4, 1995 - 2:45 AM 31. The 19th running of the Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally is history, and a rather bizarre ending has given Paul Choiniere and Jeff Becker their fifth straight win - and fourth straight national win - in their Libra Racing Hyundai Elantra. Choiniere was having a good tussle with Henry Joy/Chris Griffin Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Bruno Kreibich/Rod Hendricksen Audi Quattro, the Peter Moodie/Bob Thelwell Mazda 323GTR, and the Carl Merrill/John Bellefleur Ford Escort Cosworth when bad things started to happen to the others. Moodie lost some time when he rolled his car on stage #4, and then dropped out of the rally on stage #6 with a broken suspension. Bruno was in contention until his Audi went off the road and broke a strut. Merrill was only 20 seconds behind on stage #9 when he rolled his car, leaving body parts all over the course and ending his evening. And Joy checked into a control five minutes early and received a five-minute penalty, and - although we don't have official times yet - we think that the five minutes will end up being the margin of victory. The final results will look something like this: 1 - Choiniere/Becker Hyundai Elantra Open 2 - Joy/Griffin Mitsubishi Eclipse Open 3 - Ottey/McGarvey Mazda 323GTX Open 4 - Ayer/Houseal Audi Quattro Open 5 - Bryan/Walden Saab 900 Group 2 Winner 6 - Newey/Bradley Toyota AllTrac Group A Winner Landau/Marcus Mitsubishi Eclipse Production GT Winner Pollard/Townsend VW Golf Production Winner More as soon as we have official scores. Choiniere was able to nurse an ailing clutch to victory when the second- place Mitsubishi Eclipse of Henry Joy and Chris Griffin incurred a five- minute penalty for an early check-in for a service area, and Paul went from a 30-second advantage to a five-and-a-half minute cushion. The other top competitors gave Choiniere chase early, but they all fell off the course with various ills, including the Bruno Kreibich/Rod Hendricksen Audi Quattro (broken strut), the Peter Moodie/Bob Thelwell Mazda 323GTR (broken suspension after a rollover), and the Carl Merrill/John Bellefleur Ford Escort Cosworth (rollover and flat tire). Third overall in the event was the Columbus, Ohio-based team of Tom Ottey and Pam McGarvey in a Mazda 323GTX, with the ex-Paul Choiniere Audi Quattro driven Pat Ayer and Diane Houseal finishing fourth. Class winners included Sam Bryan/Rob Walden, from Kent, Wash., in a Saab 900 (Group 2); Bruce Newey/Charles Bradley, from Atlanta, Georgia, in a Toyota Celica AllTrac (Group A); Cal Landau/Eric Marcus, from Coraopolis, Penn., in a Mitsubishi Eclipse (Production GT); and Pete Pollard/Keith Townsend, from Toronto, Ontario, in a VW Golf (Production). Only 21 of the 36 national rally competitors completed the event, even though the damp conditions eliminated the dust that usually causes visibility problems at this North Central Pennsylvania event. In a PRO Rally, each team consists of a driver and a co-driver (or navigator), and the exact course is kept secret until just before the event - different from World Rally, where practice is allowed. The cars start at one-minute intervals and race against the clock over 6 - 24 stages which range in length from four to 25 miles. Most of the rallies include night stages, making it necessary for competitors to adjust their driving style. Speeds of more than 120 miles-per-hour could be reached on long straight-aways, with the team achieving the fastest combined times winning the event. The next event on the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally circuit is July 8 in Prescott, Arizona, followed by the Maine Summer Forest Rally July 28-29 in Rumford, Maine. Many of the top competitors, however, including Paul Choiniere and Carl Merrill, are preparing for the Mt. Washington Hillclimb to be held June 24 - 26 in northern New Hampshire. 1995 Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally Entry List Round #6 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series National PRO Rally - Final Results *notes running Divisional as well Car Num.
