Olympia, Washington -- The somewhat famous Thurston County ORV Rallysprints concluded Sunday afternoon with trophies and smiles for all of those who finished the brutal track with their cars intact. The rally is held each summer just outside of Olympia, Washington and provides a "superstage" style venue for racers to treat their crews, rally workers, and fans to fun runs around the track.

This year, the track was slick with rain on Saturday morning. The AWD Subaru Impreza USX driven by Paul Eklund stayed ahead of the pack and took top time of the day on the 7/10's mile circuit, finishing first in the Open class. Second place went to an AWD Volkswagen Bug driven by Dave LaTourette. Remarkable driving put Dave Hintz into third with a rear-wheel drive Mazda RX-7 Turbo! Saturday ended with lots of fun runs for rally workers and their kids. That evening, the rally group cooked burgers and gave away dozens of great door prizes donated by teams and sponsors.

Sunday was beautiful and the track, getting rough with wear, was run backwards in front of the grandstands. Cars began breaking. Luckily no cars rolled, although some lost tires, shocks, rear bumpers, control arms, and oil. The Primitive Racing team suffered suspension damage to first the front and then the rear, evaporating a 15 second lead. Luckily the car held together all the way to the podium and Paul Eklund scored another top stage time and the rally win. His co-driver Karen Price also put in some great stage times I her first rally as a driver! Vance Walker, local driving hero, also put in some deadly fast times while driving the Impreza USX as a third driver on the team.

In the dry, Dave Hintz kept the RX-7 ahead of the mighty Volkwagen and finished in second place. This guy can drive! Subaru drivers Patrick Richard and Gary Cavett also put in great performances. Patrick drove his Subaru 2.5RS on two wheels for a ways before landing and bending a control arm moving him down in the overall standings but still first in his class. Gary's Subaru RX was going faster and faster all day!
