VANCOUVER, BC -- Fresh from its Production GT win at Rim of the World ProRally, B.C.-based Rocket Rally Racing is heading to Alberta for the Bighorn Rally on May 21. Bighorn is the third event in the 2000 Subaru Canadian Rally Championship.
Rocket Rally Racing, supported by Specialty Subaru of North Vancouver, Drummond Motor Sport and Dragon Eyewear, is hoping this event will help it maintain its leading position in the standings. Though this is only the team's first full national championship season, it is now ranked as the top Production GT rally team in North America, based on strong performances this year including wins in Quebec (Rallye Perce-Neige), Oregon (Oregon Trail ProRally) and California (Rim of the World ProRally). The team is the current Production GT points leader in the Subaru Canadian Rally Championship, the SCCA ProRally Championship and the North American Rally Cup.
This weekend's race is important for the team's championship hopes. "If we crash hard at Bighorn, we may not be able to attend the Rocky Mountain Rally, which follows only a week later. We would like to walk away with points from both events, so we're going to take a conservative approach to Bighorn, then go all-out at Rocky," said Ian McCurdy, Rocket Rally Navigator.
Held near Edson (Hinton), Alberta, Bighorn is known for its extremely fast, smooth roads. Enthusiasts often refer to the event as a test of courage, where the fastest drivers find their speed limited only by the gearing of their vehicles.
"Since it's our first time at Bighorn, we're really excited. We've never had the opportunity to legally reach such speeds on gravel. It will be interesting to see how the car handles in that situation," said Pat Richard, Rocket Rally Driver.
Rocket Rally Racing will be continuing its Photographer's Contingency Program at Bighorn, in which photographers who submit the best action shots from the event can win cash prizes of up to $100. This contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers.
All events in the Subaru Canadian Rally Championship are televised several times each on TSN and RDS.
