NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- New York City based Eurosport Manhattan Rallying will field three cars at the 2002 Sawmill Club rally. Sawmill is a coefficient 2 performance rally counting towards the North East division drivers and co-drivers championship, and is sanctioned by the Blue Mountain region SCCA. The event will consist of eight special stages run on hard packed gravel forest roads surrounding the town of Morris, PA.
Andrew Hadjiminas and co-driver Luis Figueiredo will be back once again at the controls of the team's Open class Subaru Impreza Turbo. Andrew's last outing at the Sand Hills rally showed once again that his experience and consistency are beginning to translate in to respectable stage times. Andrew's confidence is very high for this event and will be looking to improve his experience even further and continue to pick up championship points.
Tony Birbilis will be driving his Open class Ford Escort RS Cosworth and looking to improve on the misfortunes of his last outing, where a slight off put the car on it's roof and ended his challenge. Tony will be working hard to get back in the finishers list and continue to improve his ability as a driver, but most importantly, continue to enjoy the sport. Tony will be joined in the navigator seat by new comer Martin Morse, who will be making his rallying debut. Martin was bit by the rallying bug at the Cherokee Trails International rally where he attended as a guest of the team. Martin's close personal relationship with Tony should be an asset that can only benefit the pair.
The third team car will be the Group 5 Volkswagen Fox Kit Car driven by Jose Vicente and co-driver Luis Vicente. The brothers begin their challenge for the Group 5 Championship with this rally and have very high hopes for the rest of the season. Extensive modifications have been made to the car from it's previous Open Class form and the Sawmill Club rally will be a learning experience used to asses the competitiveness of the car in the new class. Despite expecting to need improvements, as it will be the cars first outing in the new specification, the team will be looking forward for Jose and Luis to challenge for Group 5 class honors. Further, we will be joined at the event by British writer Jon Saxon. He will be here doing a feature on the VW Fox Kit Car. Jon will be arriving in New York on Thursday to meet with Sakis Hadjiminas and the rest of the team to find out more about the car. This has been in the works for some time now and plans have finally been finalized. This story will be featured in the magazine The Golf. It has a readership of around 30,000 each and every month and is distributed worldwide. The publication has been in circulation since about 1994.
