STACY, MINNESOTA -- It was a very successful weekend for Mayhem Racing’s two entries at the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Headwaters ClubRally in Park Rapids, Minnesota. Mark Utecht and Brenda Lewis finished first overall in their Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, while Mary Utecht and Heidi Meyers drove a Dodge Omni GLH Turbo to fourth place in Group 5 in their first rally.
"It’s always great to win", said Mark Utecht, "but having my wife finish in her first rally was as good as a double win". Mark and Brenda had the advantage of starting first in the rally, so they did not encounter dust hanging in the air from previous cars. They were fastest on all of the nine stages, ultimately taking the victory by one minute, thirteen seconds (1:13) over the Mitsubishi Galant VR4 of Todd Jarvey and Richard Faber. Mark has been a class winner at Headwaters twice before, but this was his first overall win at this event.
"We accomplished our goals; we finished and we had a lot of fun", said Mary Utecht. "The Omni ran just fine all day. Our only problem was that as rookies we had to start near the back of the pack so the roads were pretty torn up by the time we came through the course. That meant we had ruts and soft sand in many corners and couldn’t pull out of the corners as well as if we had a clean road surface". Mary and Heidi finished 16th overall among the 21 finishers, and fourth in Group 5 among six entries.
Mark Utecht and Brenda Lewis currently lead the Production GT points in the SCCA ProRally series. They took first in class at the Sno*Drift ProRally in Michigan, and were second in PGT at the Oregon Trail ProRally in April. Production GT is considered a "stock" class, allowing very few modifications other than for safety.
The Group 5 1986 Dodge Omni Turbo is a front-wheel drive machine, a limited production, performance version of the popular Dodge Omni. More performance modifications are allowed under the Group 5 rules, but two-wheel drive is a limitation.
Utecht and Lewis won the SCCA ProRally Group 5 driver and co-driver titles in 2000 aboard a Dodge Omni GLH. In addition, they were awarded the Jon Woodner Cup, presented to the most successful two-wheel drive competitors in the ProRally series. The pair were also given the SCCA Land O’ Lakes Region Rally Driver and Rally Co-driver of the Year trophies at the region’s annual awards banquet.
The Headwaters ClubRally is organized by the Land O’ Lakes Region of the Sports Car Club of America. It is one of eight ClubRallies on the SCCA’s Central Division schedule during 2001. Sponsors of the 2001 Mayhem Racing ProRally effort include:
Mayhem Racing is based in Stacy, Minnesota, just north of the Twin Cities. Team manager is Mark's wife, Mary Utecht. J. B. Lewis is Chief Mechanic on the team's 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX.
