EDSON, ALBERTA -- The Waterloo Ontario based Two AM Rallysport team took top honours in the Production 3 or P3 class this weekend at the 2001 Bighorn Rally in Edson, Alberta. After making the long trek west, driver Andrew miller and co-driver Robin Fleguel were able to bring home their 1995 VW Golf first in class and 11th overall.
A long day consisting of 21 special stages on gravel forestry roads over 14 hrs of competition proved quite the test for team and car. The 3500 foot elevation and soft surfaces sapped the VW's already limited power, but luck was with the team when rival teams Steve Walkington/Hytham Moktar and Peter Reily/Ray Felice both ran into troubles. The former spent about 12 minutes of the road after missing a high speed turn and the latter had to slow due to rear suspension failure.
"It was a great event", said Miller, "we just ran as smooth and consistent as possible". He adds "The only disappointment is missing the top ten by just 11 seconds".
The next event for the team is this weekend's Rocky Mountain Rally in Calgary. A change of surface and a little lower elevation should suit the team well as they make a bid to grab more championship points in the west.
The Subaru Canadian Rally Championship, which consists of 8 events, runs from February to November. All 8 rounds are televised on TSN. Two AM Rallysport competes in the P3 class with help from its sponsors Volkswagen Waterloo, Dave's Tire Discounter, Frisco Auto Parts, Pennzoil 10 Minute Oil Change Center and AM Innovations Inc.
