STACY, MINNESOTA -- Mayhem Racing’s Mark Utecht and Brenda Lewis have captured the Drivers and Co-Drivers titles in the Sports Car Club of America’s ProRally Production GT class. Utecht and Lewis took their 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX to two wins and three second place finishes in five ProRallies entered so far this year. They will wrap up their successful season at the Lake Superior ProRally on October 19-20, in Houghton, Michigan.
"We were concerned about the switch from a modified two-wheel drive class to a stock all-wheel drive class," said Utecht. "We were not sure if we could maintain the momentum we had from last year's championship season. Luckily, we were able to run a safe but fast pace that resulted in no DNFs for the season. The same can not be said for our competition. We are very surprised and pleased to win the championship in our first year with all-wheel drive."
"It has been an exciting couple of years co-driving for Mark," said Lewis. "I’ve learned this year to let him know when he is pushing too close to the edge, and I think that has helped us to finish more events. There have been other teams in our class faster than us at the beginning of most rallies this year, but they have often dropped out due to mechanical problems or driver error. It is important as a team to find that narrow range between speed and reliability and we seem to have found it this season."
Production GT is considered a "stock" class, allowing few modifications other than for safety and for comfort. The Mayhem Racing Eclipse has Sparco racing seats for driver and co-driver, Willans safety harnesses, a Mayhem Racing custom built roll cage, Auto Meter Gauges, a Terratrip rally computer, and a Terraphone intercom. Out front are Hella HID (High Intensity Discharge) Rally Lights in a custom pod, and the car rides on specialized Michelin Rally tires. The only performance enhancement is the addition of a GReddy Profec Boost controller.
Utecht and Lewis won the SCCA ProRally Group 5 driver and co-driver titles in 2000 aboard a Dodge Omni GLH. In addition, they were awarded the Jon Woodner Cup, presented to the most successful two-wheel drive competitors in the ProRally series.
