Tulsa, Oklahoma -- The RealAutoSport, LLC Volkswagen New Beetle Rally Car is headed to Palmdale, California to compete in the Rim of the World Sports Car Club of America ProRally May 4 & 5, 2001 (www.rimoftheworldrally.com). Event organizer Paula Gibeault warns, "Rim can humble the best. It's the roughest event in the series, a real test of reliability." Racing over the mountainous fire trails of the Angeles National Forest is acknowledged as a true test of both machine and man.
Durability, however, is a trademark of the rally car that has been seen in over 55 million households starring in those "Cute Car" television commercials. Its mid-March return to rally action boasted a fine 16th overall and first-runner-up class finish at the grueling, three-day-long International Cherokee Trails Rally based in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Michael Halley, president of RealAutoSport, LLC and lead driver of the car that has come to be known as the StudBug said, "I am very excited about rallying in southern California. I learned a lot about the New Beetle racing over those Great Smoky Mountain trails and I was able to get comfortable with both the car and my teammate, Joshua Bressem of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. We can, and will, get up to competitive speeds right away at Rim."
Halley acknowledges that the best reason to be excited about the weekend's competition is the opportunity to compete against John Buffum, the man acknowledged as the country's best rally driver. "It's like a dream come true," Halley added, "John Buffum and I competing in the same class with comparable, state-of-art, Production class rally cars! It's like the weekend golfer getting a chance to compete with Tiger Woods!"
The Sports Car Club of America ProRally Championship is the nation's only performance rally series with uniquely varied venues coast-to-coast. Teams compete flat- out against the clock for hundreds of miles over closed-to-the-public forestry roads separated into a series of special stages. A co-driver tells the driver where jumps, dangerous turns or other obstacles are to the hundredth of a mile by utilizing a route book and special odometer. All events are televised on Speedvision (www.speedvision.com).
