Middle Village, NY -- An early snowstorm and freezing temperatures made for an exciting race at the D&N Bank Lake Superior ProRally on the Keweenaw peninsula of Michigan, the last event in the 1999 Michelin SCCA ProRally Series. Although the snow did not accumulate significantly, what started as mud became a hard rutted icy surface during Friday's night stages. The challenge for driver Arthur Wojcik was simply to keep the car on the road. Although the team concentrated on survival over winning, they managed to finish fifth in class in Friday's Ottawa ClubRally. On the last stage the power steering failed, and what the team hoped was simply a broken belt, turned out to be sheared mounting bolts which could not be repaired in time for Saturday's stages. Arthur explains, "Friday night provided some of the most challenging stages I have ever driven. Tire choice was critical, but unfortunately, our best option was our gravel tires which were really too wide and hard for the conditions."

As the temperatures warmed during Saturday's Auto Value Keweenaw Challenge ClubRally, the team found themselves in their element; slippery, deep, rutted mud. The roads were still treacherous, and Arthur was able to practice his "Disco Polo" car dancing technique, which mostly involves going sideways at breathtaking speeds. Like all good rally drivers, Arthur lead with the passenger side of the car, giving rookie co-driver Chuck Cox the most exciting ride of his career. With more confidence and traction, they were able to finish third in class in Saturday's ClubRally and 11th in class for the two-day ProRally.

Arthur summarized, "Saturday offered some exciting stages, but without the power steering, I had more of a workout than I needed, especially on the tarmac stages. By the end of the day, my shoulders, arms, and hands were trashed, but that couldn't erase the smile from my face". The Lake Superior ProRally will be broadcast on Speedvision on 11/8 at 8pm and midnight.

Unfortunately, Team Artex Motorsport did not earn enough points to win the NEDIV ClubRally Championship yet, but they have two more Canadian events in which to get the 96 points they need for the championship. With the announcement of the 2000 SCCA ProRally schedule, Team Artex Motorsport is already planning the next season. With a lock on second in the NEDIV ClubRally championship, the team will be invited to the National ClubRally Championship in Paris, Texas in January where they will compete against other Divisional champions.
