Team YO! Rallysport Heads for Headwaters

Grand Rapids, Michigan -- Team Yo! Rallysport is preparing for its second SCCA performance rally of the season, the Headwaters ClubRally to be held this weekend, May 13th, in Park Rapids, MN. The team, consisting of driver Jerry Brownell of Grand Rapids, MI, and co-driver Jim Windsor of Fort Wayne, IN, is anxious to try to improve on its 4th place in class and 14th overall finish at the Cherokee Trails ClubRally this past March. "It's not going to be easy," says Brownell, "there are more than twice as many entrants in this rally, and I hear the roads are faster, which might not suit our car very well."

Headwaters will be Team YO! Rallysport's debut within the highly competitive Central Division. 'Oskar', their 1983 Chevy Citation, will be familiar to many of the participants. The car was built in 1988 for Gail Hoult (Truess), the 1999 Production GT National Champion and first ever female National class champion in ProRally (the National version of ClubRally), and was last raced in 1997. Gail drove the car to a runner-up finish in the Central Division. The car has proven to be durable, and has finished 90% of the races entered. Only 50% to 70% of the cars entered in a race typically finish. It was acquired by Team YO! Rallysport in January of this year.

Upgrades for this rally include the addition of external and internal lighting for the night stages of Headwaters. "We didn't worry about lighting for Cherokee Trails, since it was a daytime-only rally," says Windsor, "but we spent some time in the last month working on the lights for Headwaters, since we'll probably be finishing after midnight. We're looking forward to running in the dark."

Another addition to the car for Headwaters is an in-car video system. Mounted on the rollcage on the inside of the car, the system will videotape the scene out the front window. "I can't wait to see the tape," says Windsor. "The driver gets to see the road all of the time, but the co-driver spends all of his time looking at the route book and odometer. It will be nice to watch the tape later, and see where we were!"

Performance rallying is currently the second largest spectator sport in Europe and is gaining popularity in North America. It is a flat-out race over closed sections of rural roads by modified production cars. Competitors race one car at a time against the clock, usually at one-minute intervals. Flat-out racing is done primarily on dirt roads and two-tracks blocked off from civilian traffic, rather than on prepared tracks. Each car has a driver and a co-driver (or navigator).

Additional races planned for this season include two more Minnesota ClubRallys, one in Munising, Michigan, and two in Houghton, Michigan.
