Tulsa, Oklahoma -- The RealAutoSport, LLC Volkswagen New Beetle Rally Car successfully completed the second longest ProRally of the Sports Car Club of America sanctioned series - the Susquehannock Trail ProRally in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania - and just like the longer one - Tennessee’s Cherokee Trails International Rally in March - the "StudBug" came home ready to tackle another rally race. In an event that boasted over 100 entries, 90 starters, 51 finishers and the largest Production class entry in recent memory the resilient VW finished 24th overall and 2nd from 15 starters and 10 class finishers. Thanks to the solid finish, Volkswagen automobiles claimed a one-two sweep in the STPR Production class battles!
Despite Mother Nature’s attempts to wash everyone off the slick, clay Pennsylvania Sate Forest roads, the New Beetle carried Michael Halley and new codriver Ole Holter safely to the finish securing a hold for each on third place in the Driver and Codriver Championships, respectively. Commenting on the weekend’s events, Halley said, "We chose to let the rally come to us. Our stage times were solid and consistent throughout this long, grueling day and Tony Chavez had to drive his Volkswagen Golf GTI very hard at the end to claim a close win. Despite the first-runner-up finish, I love this car! It may be cute on the outside, but it is a rally animal under the skin!"
The New Beetle Rally Car carried Karl Scheible and Gail McGuire to the 1999 SCCA ProRally Production Class Driver Championships and Halley remains optimistic about his team’s chances to secure the 2001 titles, "We have yet to let this New Beetle beast loose. I am very much looking forward to the rest of the season, especially July in Maine where the roads are rough but easily tamed by a solid car equipped with Drummond Motorsport Suspension struts and shocks."
The SCCA ProRally Championship is the nation’s only performance rally series with uniquely varied venues coast-to-coast. Teams compete flat-out for hundreds of miles over closed-to-the-public forestry roads separated into a series of special stages. A codriver warns the driver of jumps, dangerous turns, exposures and other obstacles thanks to the official route book and a hundredth reading odometer. All events are televised on Speedvision (www.speedvision.com).
