Wilmington, Deleware -- Lesley Suddard of Wilmington, DE announced today that her codriver for the Lake Superior ProRally will be John Dillon, Thousand Oaks, CA, of the Widget Rally Team. Suddard is a former ClubRally Runoffs and Canadian Novice champion with numerous divisional titles to her credit, while Dillon has earned divisional titles as well as special awards like the Carl Merrill Sportsmanship Award and Codriver of the Year in 2000.
"This will be the first time I've had John in the car with me, but he helped out our team as a crew member last June in Pennsylvania," she reported. "I look forward to having him call out the notes at LSPR." This rally takes place October 18 and 19, 2003, along the roads of Michigan's upper peninsula near Houghton. Her regular U.S. codriver, Doc Shrader, is sitting out the event so he can serve as Safety Steward.
"I'm excited to be racing with Lesley," said Dillon. "We had fun together at STPR [Susquehannock Trail ProRally in Wellsboro, PA] last June, so I'm sure it'll be even more fun at LSPR."
Suddard's car, a Ford Focus sponsored by Expansions Inc, Shelby East and Artwerkx, has suffered mechanical problems in the earlier part of the season, but she hopes those gremlins have finally been put to rest. The Widget Team is sponsored by Tombstone Paintball Park, Sampson Racing Communications, Porterfield Enterprises, and Shults Dot Com.
The service crew once again features the father and son team of Lee and Lee McElhinny, along with Matt Andrzejak. "Les is a great person to race with," said the elder Lee. "We enjoy helping her out whenever we can." LSPR was the very first rally they ever attended, only one year ago. Coincidentally, they volunteered to help out "Mad Mike" Halley in a Volkswagen New Beetle, whose codriver for that weekend was Dillon.
In an additional twist of fate, Suddard and Dillon will be racing this year against Halley and his new codriver Bill Montgomery. "I'm counting on Lesley to cross the line ahead of Mike," joked her codriver. "Whichever one of us finishes first will round out the Production-class podium for the year-end codriver's championship!" More importantly, the team has set four priorities: safety, fun, finish and fast, in that order. "Every driver I race with has these same priorities--I think that's why we always have a good time in the car."
The Lake Superior ProRally is the last event on the SCCA ProRally calendar, but Dillon has two more races scheduled with his regular partner Leon Styles: the Prescott Forest Rally in Arizona and the Ramada Express International Rally, headquartered in Laughlin, Nevada. Suddard plans to compete in one more Canadian event, the Rally of the Tall Pines, in November where she expects to wrap up a second place finish in the Production Class of the North American Rally Championship.
