Bangor, Maine -- Last Ditch Racing posted their best finish to date, finishing 24th after starting 43 in a field of 80 cars in the SCCA sanctioned Rim of the World ProRally, in Palmdale California this past weekend. The team was the furthest continental entry to the event.
In the ClubRally portion of the event, the team finished 12, posting two top 10 stage times, another first for the team. Throughout the event, the team bested some turbo-charged all wheel drive cars in their normally aspirated 2.5L Subaru Impreza. Cassidy attributes their performance in the mud to aggressive driving and their recently installed PhantomGrip rear limited slip differential unit. "Even with all wheel drive, we often found the car going in un-intended directions," said Cassidy. "Without the PhantomGrip unit, our weekend would have been much less enjoyable!"
The team was plagued by problems with the ECU(engine control unit) at the higher than Maine elevations, resulting in a loss in power. "I was pumping the throttle going up the Mountain stages on Friday night trying to maintain speed," said Cassidy. The event was notable for the cold and very wet conditions, with some areas receiving inches of rain over the weekend. The rain, fog, and resulting mud made conditions difficult for all teams.
Despite, the ECU troubles, the team’s car, "Steel Tulip," lived up to her name, requiring little attention from the service crew. The team lost the engine in their tow vehicle in Springfield, MO, which will leave little time to prepare for the next event, the Susquehannock Trail ProRally June 5-6 in Pennsylvania.
