Format:
Events in the SCCA ProRally Championship consist of flat-out competition,
in any weather, on challenging forest, mountain or desert roads. SCCA
Performance Rally events follow a basic rally format similar to that used
around the globe. However, USA events do not allow for on course practice
(recces). Competitors generally see the course for the first time as they
race it.
Racing takes place only on "special stages," using demanding back roads
closed by local authorities for the event. "Transits" connect the "special
stage" sections together and are driven at normal highway speeds, with teams
fully subject to all traffic laws.
SCCA Performance Rally vehicles are production-based cars and trucks
from manufacturers around the world. They compete both for the overall
victory and wins within a class structure that groups together vehicles with
similar performance.
Each vehicle carries a driver and a co-driver/navigator. Using a
detailed route book and a sophisticated rally computer, the co-driver keeps
the team on-course and advises the driver of any hazards ahead. This role is
as critical as the driver's skill, since the team is traveling at full racing
speeds over roads they have never before seen, in any type of weather.

Selected entries (driver/co-driver):
ˇ 1999 Overall Manufacturer, Driver & Co-Driver Champions Noel Lawler &
Charles Bradley; Open Class Hyundai Tiburon (debut of new 2000 model car)
ˇ Seven-time US champion Paul Choiniere and six-time co-driver champion
Jeff Becker; Open Class Hyundai Tiburon (also in a new 2000 model car)
ˇ Current 1999 GT (Japan) drivers Champion and Nissan (Lemans) works driver
Erik Comas, with co-driver Julian Masters; FIA Group N 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer
Evo IV
ˇ Canadian Snowboarding Champions and young rally phenomenon Patrick
Richard with co-driver Ian McCurdy; Production GT Class 1998 Subaru Impreza
2.5 RS
ˇ 1998 Group 5 Driver Champion (and 1999 runner-up) Ralph Kosmides with new
co-driver Ken Cassidy; 1996 Toyota Supra turbo;

Additional news interest:
ˇ Manufacturers Championship is heating up - Mitsubishi joins the points
race, Hyundai debuts two new cars, debut of new Group A Subaru Impreza,
Toyota represented with two Group 5 Supra Turbos.
ˇ The entire Oregon Trail event is held within a 50 mile radius of
Tillamook. The hotel/press room, Blimp Hanger display/start area,
scrutineering location and awards luncheon location are all within 3 miles of
each other on the same road (Main Street).
ˇ The 2000 season marks the return of globally recognized, FIA classed,
performance rally vehicles to the USA. The FIA cars will run under full FIA
technical regulations, and compete for a separate year-long, FIA cars only
championship.

Event Rank:
Oregon Trail returns to the 9-event SCCA ProRally Championship for the first
time since 1984. Drivers at this event earn points towards the national
championship, and supporting manufacturers (Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru and
Mitsubishi) earn points towards overall and class MFG Championships.

Credentials:
Press/Photo credentials will be available at registration on Saturday
morning. Access to press only photo areas will require a press pass.
Credentials are available only to members of the working press.

Interviews:
Drivers, co-drivers and crew members will be accessible throughout the event,
including Saturday morning's Scrutineering and at the Parc Expose prior to
the start of the rally.

Visuals:
During the event, action photography and video will be possible from special
viewing areas set up along the rally course, as well as other sites. A
Press/VIP van will be available (weather permitting) for transport to and
from these sites for registered press without transport of their own.

Media information:
Media relations will be able to provide driver and co-driver interviews,
event results and other information via telephone, fax and Email.

The 2000 season marks the 28th consecutive running of the series, and the
first time since 1989 that globally homologated FIA rally cars have been
recognized in the US championship, helping to set the stage for the return of
FIA rally competition to this country. Performance Rally is considered to be
the fastest growing motorsport in the world, with fan followings and similar
championships presented in virtually every country in the world.

SCCA ProRally racing takes place only on "special stages," using demanding

Start Order & Late Breaking News:
SCCAŽ ProRally Championship - Oregon Trail ProRally

A field of 52 cars from across the US and Canada have converged on the
coastal hamlet of Tillamook, Oregon for round #2 of the SCCA ProRally
Championship. All four Championship manufacturers (Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru
and Mitsubishi) are represented, with all but one debuting cars new to the
series. The two-day performance rally, held primarily on gravel logging
trails along the northwestern shoreline of Oregon, starts Saturday.

Selected late entries, news (driver/co-driver):
ˇ 1999 Production Class Driver Champion Karl Scheible & co-driver Russ
Hughes;
FIA Group N Class 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V
After an exciting debut run at Sno*Drift in January, where Karl nearly
captured the overall win Karl was going to sit out this event and run Rim of
the World in May. However, with Mitsubishi's entry last week into the SCCA
ProRally Manufacturers Championship, the Vermont Sports Car team is here to
make up manufacturer points it couldn't earn in January.
ˇ 2000 Alcan Winter Rally overall winner Paul Eklund & co-driver Scott
Huhn;
SCCA Open Class 1995 Subaru Impreza
Paul crashed hard at the finish of last months Doowop ClubRally in
Washington, and had to replace the entire front clip of his Impreza.
Re-assembly of the car was completed last night, so there will be no time to
test this very fast car prior to the start.
ˇ In addition to the new car debuts, tire selection will be one of the
weekend's top stories. While Michelin remains the tire brand of choice with
many entrants, the Oregon Trail entry list has a broad variety of rally tire
brands in use - the largest array seen at any ProRally in years. Among the
top brands are Pirelli, which carried 1999 overall driver champion Noel
Lawler to victory, with 5 entries, and Malaysian upstart Silverstone, in its
second season in the US, with 11 entries, the company's largest single
ProRally turnout ever. With every stage in the rally completely new and
un-driven by any rally team, this weekend is seen as a genuine litmus test
for the brand.
ˇ The rally starts at the Tillamook Blimp Hangar - a World War II era
structure of enormous dimensions - and a well-known landmark in this area.
The start features two special treats for the fans - a one and a half hour
"Parc Expose" - with all the drivers and cars in attendance for autographs,
interviews and photos. At the 2:30 start, each car will negotiate a special
RallyCross stage on the hangar grounds - giving everyone a chance to see the
cars in action up close. The rally ends on Sunday at the hangar as well -
with the final RallyCross stage also on the Hangar grounds.
ˇ Comprehensive spectator information is now available on the Oregon Trail
Rally website. (see link below) This information will also be available at
the headquarters hotel, in the pressroom.
ˇ Weather: Conditions in the Tillamook area are predicted to be seasonably
cool, with daytime temperatures in the mid 50's (11 C), dropping to the 40's
at night (7 C). Probability of precipitation is about 60%, with the
potential for nighttime snow flurries in the higher elevations.

Information regarding this list:
Start = order in which cars will leave at the start of the event
Car # = number on vehicle.
ˇ Cars numbered under 200 are ProRally entries.
ˇ Cars over 200 are generally ClubRally (regional) entrants, or rookie Pro
entries.
ˇ Class = Open, FIA group A & group N - are fastest cars with considerable
modifications
P & PGT are regular production cars very near to showroom stock
configuration.
G5 - two wheel drive high HP cars; G2 - two wheel drive lower HP cars

SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #2 - Oregon Trail
Day One Preliminary Results and Key Notes

With an unexpected but welcome break in the very soggy weather coming just in
time for the start, a final tally of 52 cars began the SCCA Oregon Trail
ProRally at 2:30 Pacific Time this afternoon.

Key Notes:
¨ The rally began at the Tillamook Air Museum, which is housed in a relic
of a bygone era, a gargantuan blimp hangar from WWII. The grounds around the
old airbase were converted into a special RallyCross stage, complete with
several mud bath splashes for the plentiful spectators on hand, many of whom
lined the course closely, then after a few showers of mud, from just a little
further away. The 1.8 mile stage also featured at least three different
surface conditions, including the aforementioned mud, Tarmac and Concrete.
The same RallyCross is scheduled to be repeated as tomorrow's final stage.
¨ Among the spectators this weekend is Allesandro Ticozzi, who flew in from
Italy to observe the US version of the sport. Ticozzi was Italy's 1997-98
Citroen Saxo Spec Car Rally Champion, and is considering entering several US
events, perhaps as soon as Rim of the World next month.
¨ European and Asian road racing hot shoe Erik Comas is making his
performance rally debut a successful one, effectively keeping his Mitsubishi
Lancer Evo IV in the top 10 for much of the first days running.
¨ Retirements started before the rally even began, the first victim being
Ron and Josh Sorem's 87 Subaru RX, with engine electrical problems. Lee
Shadbolt failed to debut his new Group A Impreza, but not due to any problems
with the car - Lee is very ill with the flu, and simply made the wise
decision not to compete in a new and very quick car with less than perfect
driver reflexes. Once the rally was underway, Special Stages 2 and 3 were
particularly hard on the ClubRally entries, with a total of 15 retirements
recorded by the end of SS4. Complete details below.
¨ 1999 Champion Noel Lawler was having a strong run in his brand new
Tiburon until hitting a rock in SS5 causing his first puncture in over a year
of competition. Continuing on to the finish, he hit another rock, bending
the left front steering knuckle. Regardless, he finished the evenings
driving only 18 seconds behind his teammate and overall leader, Paul
Choiniere.
¨ 1999 Production class champion Karl Scheible, who moved up to the new FIA
Group N category in January, with a thrilling run at Sno*Drift (2nd overall),
was having another good run up through stage 5, where, in a high speed
section of the course, rolled his Evo V, ending his day. Bill Malik suffered
a similar fate on the same stage.

Final Results - SCCA ProRally - Round #2 - Oregon Trail
Hyundai Triumphs, Erik Comas Astonishes

Oregon Trail is clearly back on the map as an SCCA ProRally Championship
destination with the conclusion of an exceptional debut event in the small
coastal town of Tillamook, Oregon. The rally posed a daunting combination of
tight, twisty and steep mountain trails that would challenge a Jeep and
smooth gravel roads built for huge lumber hauling trucks. Speeds ranged from
barely moving to nearly 100 mph, and provided real rally excitement for
participants and fans alike.

Key Notes:
¨ The Libra Racing Hyundai team was up late last night working on several
gremlins on Noel Lawler's new Tiburon, including some electrical and external
engine issues to be expected on a brand new rally car. The damage to the
front suspension after yesterday evenings puncture and rock impact were
essentially, according to John Buffum, the teams manager, 'a non-issue,' and
heading out this morning things looked good. However, the electrical and
turbo teething problems were an issue, and Noel had his hands full just to
hang on to second place in the overalls.
¨ Erik Comas' brilliant debut in US Performance Rally continued to go
exceedingly well, with a solid top 5 finish, and a win in the new FIA group N
category. The fast and smooth hard-packed gravel surfaces common to several
of the Day 2 stages suited Erik's road racing background, and he was able to
make substantial leaps up the leaderboard. Comas' Lancer Evo IV was also the
top finishing Mitsubishi, awarding the company its first SCCA ProRally
championship points since the Manufacturers' Championship was established at
the start of the 1999 season.
¨ Local favorites Paul Eklund and Eric Eaton, having strong runs in Day
one, both fell victim to transmission failures in SS9, and retired from
competition. Eric Eaton's PR agent did a good job of turning a bad day
around, announcing shortly after the retirement that Eric would be at Rim of
the World in an all new car - a turbocharged 99 Subaru 2.5RS.
¨ Thanks to clear skies, resourceful teamwork and a very supportive
Tillamook community of welders, mechanics and parts stores, 9 of the 17 cars
that failed to finish Day 1 were back at the start line this morning, buoying
the overall field back up to 39 cars. (52 started Day 1)
¨ The Group 2 race was tight, with series veteran David White capturing a
satisfying win in his first performance rally since 1998. It wasn't a walk
in the park however - hounded from SS1 to the finish by Jay Streets and Nate
Tennis, both rising west coast stars in the SCCA ProRally championship.
¨ In Group 5, Carl Jardevall, another local favorite, showed his mastery of
driving a big 7 series Volvo on loose gravel with an upset win over Ralph
Kosmides, in the Toyota Supra.
¨ Patrick Richard continued his steady climb up the ProRally ranks with a
commanding 6 minute win over the 2nd place Production GT entry, and an
impressive 8th place finish overall.
¨ The Production class winner treated rally fans to a rare sight - a
faithfully restored 1973 vintage Porsche 911, driven hard and fast by its
owner and restorer Dennis Chizma, bringing back a look performance rally from
its early days here in the United States.
¨ Errata: Corrections to last nights unofficial Day One results - Karl
Scheible (61) rolled in SS 6, not SS5, and damage to the Evo V is minor.
Paul Dubinsky (97) brakes did fail in SS2 as reported, but he did not have an
accident - and reported this morning that all the car needs is a new right
front brake line and he will be good to run at Rim of the World in three
weeks. Good thing too - Paul towed nearly 3000 miles from his home in South
Carolina for this event.
