Contact Paula Gibeault at 760.375.8704 (voice) 760.384.2640 (fax) or via email at: gibeault@ridgecrest.ca.us Selected entries (driver/co-driver): ˇ 1999 Overall Manufacturer, Driver & Co-Driver Champions Noel Lawler & Charles Bradley; Open Class 2000 Hyundai Tiburon ˇ Sno*Drift & OregonTrail overall winners Paul Choiniere & Jeff Becker; 2000 Hyundai Tiburon ˇ 1999 Rim of the World overall winners Garen & Doc Shrader; 1997 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV ˇ 1998 Group 5 Driver Champion (and 1999 runnerup) Ralph Kosmides with Ken Cassidy; 1996 Toyota Supra turbo; ˇ 1999 Production Drivers Champion Karl Scheible, with Russ Hughes, 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V. ˇ 2000 Oregon Trail PGT winner Patrick Richard with Ian McCurdy; 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS Additional news interest: ˇ The Manufacturers Championship, which received a strong boost with the arrival of Mitsubishi at Oregon Trail, is expected to further heat up at Rim, with debut of Lee Shadbolt's Group A Subaru Impreza, and no less than five Mitsubishi Lancers. Hyundai's strong out-of-the-box debut of their two new Tiburons at Oregon Trail proved the company has done its off-season homework, and further development to keep them out front is expected in preparation for Rim. ˇ The tire war is building - Oregon Trail had no less than 4 different tire companies finish in the top 10 overall, and this trend is expected to continue, with strong efforts from Pirelli, Michelin and Silverstone all expected to run at the front. ˇ The Rim of the World Event is acknowledged as the most demanding event on the ProRally Championship schedule, with a history of high attrition. Rough twisting roads, choking dust and fickle weather in the high elevations quickly wear down drivers and equipment. Event Rank: This rally is a full points SCCA ProRally Championship event, and has long been a fixture of the championship, the 2000 event marks its 17th running. Drivers at this event earn points towards the national championship, and supporting manufacturers (Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi) earn points towards overall and class MFG Championships. Credentials: Event Press/Photo credentials will be available at registration on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Access to press only photo areas will require a press pass. Credentials are available only to members of the working press. Per California National Forest regulations, an 'adventure pass' is required to gain access to certain areas. The organizer will have a limited supply available. There is a nominal fee for each pass. Visuals & Interviews: During the event, action photography and video will be possible from special viewing areas set up along the rally course, as well as other sites. Drivers, co-drivers and crew will be accessible throughout the event, including the Friday morning press event, Friday afternoons brief Parc Expose, and Saturday morning's charity event and informal Parc Expose. Media information: Media relations will be able to provide driver and co-driver interviews, event results and other information via telephone and Email. All four Championship manufacturers (Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi) are represented, featuring the hugely successful Hyundai Tiburons, 4 Mitsubishi Lancers, and the debut of several new Subaru Imprezas. The two-day event will be held in the Angeles National Forest, on narrow trails that follow the mountain peaks along the San Andreas Fault. The Rally starts tomorrow. Selected late entries, news (driver/co-driver): ˇ 1999 Production Class Driver Champion Karl Scheible & co-driver Russ Hughes; FIA Group N Class 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V - Karl had a rough time of it in April's Oregon Trail event, rolling his Evo halfway through the first day of competition. Expect to see Karl really pushing for an overall win to makeup lost championship points. ˇ 2000 Alcan Winter Rally overall winner Paul Eklund & co-driver Scott Huhn; SCCA Open Class 1995 Subaru Impreza - One of several hard-luck stories at last month's Oregon Trail ProRally, shattering the gearbox close to the finish, Eklund arrives here with a new transmission and several more tweaks to his turbocharged engine. ˇ Local favorite Lon Peterson and newcomer Jonathan Ryther debut a pair of 2000 Subaru Imprezas, each built to SCCA Open class specification - which means lots of horsepower. Peterson campaigned an indestructible 1979 vintage Plymouth Fire Arrow for many years in southern California, but is now looking seriously at a run for the national title in state of the art machinery. ˇ The rally starts at the headquarters hotel at 6:30 PM with a Parc Expose, drivers will be on-hand for autographs, interviews and photos. At the 7:00PM start, each car will negotiate a special RallyCross stage at speed in a lot adjacent to the hotel giving everyone a chance to see the cars in action up close. ˇ Comprehensive spectator information is now available on the Rim of the World Rally website. (see link below) this information will also be available at the headquarters hotel, in the press room. Stage times with about a 1 hour time delay will also be available at the site. ˇ The weather for the event is expected to be much better than has been traditional, with warm mid-70's temperatures during the day, and mild 40's in the evenings. The good weather will be important, as the stewards reports indicate that the stage roads are the roughest they have been in several years. Attrition, particularly in SS 3, is expected to be high. For immediate release 5 May 2000 SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #3 - Rim of the World Day One Preliminary Results and Key Notes At 7:00 PM Pacific Time this evening a final tally of 51 cars began the 17th running of the SCCA Rim of the World ProRally, the Championship's most grueling event, under clear, crisp and blustery skies. Key Notes: ¨ The rally began at the headquarters Hotel, the Palmdale Holiday Inn, with the surrounding fields converted, as is now becoming standard at SCCA ProRally events, into a special RallyCross stage. The 1.2 mile stage was primarily composed of the fine, silty dirt that is so much a part of the "Rim" mystique, with a 1/8 mile tarmac strip in the center of the run for an extra challenge. ¨ The extraordinarily fine dirt that makes up the Angeles Forest mountains began its legendary choking ways very early on in the rally, claiming Noel Lawler's Hyundai Tiburon as an early victim - shorting out the alternator halfway through stage 4. Paul Choiniere's Tiburon nearly befell the same fate in the same stage, but had enough battery power to make it to service. ¨ Early retirements claimed two front runners; Bill Malik's Volvo (transmission) and Paul Eklund's Subaru Impreza (engine). On SS4, Ralph Kosmides' Toyota Supra scooped up a rock into its accessory belt drive, shattering a tensioner and dropping the team back a staggering 24 positions. By the end of the night, Kosmides was able to gain back 10 of those spots, finishing 20th overall. ¨ Tony Chavez, a local favorite that always runs near the front, ran out of fuel on his way to the service, but luckily only lost one position due to the delay. Jay Streets (#351) suffered a similar fate, but was towed into the service by #97 (Dubinsky) loosing only a few positions. ¨ Garen Shrader, last year's overall winner, and who was running as high as 2nd overall tonight, high-centered on a berm in SS6 and has been time-barred from the event, after several unsuccessful attempts to extricate themselves. ¨ At the close of tonight's running, only two entries had retired due to accidents - the #377 Eagle Talon of Sean McKenna and Neal Kiley, and the #222 Nissan Sentra SE-R of Jon Tabor and Kevin Poirier, which squarely hit a rock, big enough to put the motor into the hood, and catapult the car into a spectacular multiple barrel roll. That car, clearly, is a write-off, but both driver and co-driver are fine. ¨ Eric Eaton, the newcomer who did so well at last month's Oregon Trail event until suffering transmission failure on the penultimate stage, is having another exceptionally good first half of the rally, and is clearly hoping for an equally good 2nd day. Eaton's new Subaru Impreza 2.5RS, which was scheduled to debut here at Rim, is still being finished, so his usually faithful Mazda 323GTX was repaired and put back into service for this weekend. ¨ And finally, 1999 Production class champion Karl Scheible, with co-driver Russ Hughes, is having a very good evening, finishing the night much the way they finished Sno*Drift in January - right behind Paul Choiniere in 2nd place, setting the stage for what will certainly shape up to be a very interesting Day 2. For immediate release 6 May 2000 SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #3; Day 2 - Rim of the World Preliminary Results and Key Notes Mitsubishi 1 & 2, FIA Group N takes overall At 1:00 PM Pacific Time this afternoon a reconstituted group of 36 cars were at the Day Two restart of the SCCA Rim of the World ProRally, with the strongest manufacturer field in a decade heading to the Angeles National Forest to test each other in a genuine survival of the fittest. Key Notes: ¨ The rally started its second day at the headquarters Hotel, following an extended Parc Expose. During the Parc, the organizers hosted a fundraising RallyCross event for local charities, offering rides in the rally cars to the fans; there were plenty of takers, with the MFG Championship Mitsubishi Lancers and Subaru Imprezas high on the 'preferred' list. ¨ As the afternoon turned to night the running order began to really move around, with multiple suspension problems plaguing front-runners and ClubRally entrants alike. The remaining factory Hyundai (#2, Choiniere) had a rear suspension failure in SS9, but, like the proverbial cat with nine lives, was able to get to service and effect repairs in time for SS10. ¨ Eric Eaton, the newcomer who had a great day one, had an even better day two, running as high as 2nd overall, falling back to 5th due to a puncture in SS12. ¨ Ralph Kosmides, in the Toyota Supra, made up 11 of the 14 minutes he lost last night - a remarkable achievement on the rough roads Day 2 presented, but not enough to gain back position. "Carl [Jardevall, #39] ran a brilliant race all day. I really, really hate that his car gave up on him. He deserved the win." ¨ And finally, 1999 Production class champion Karl Scheible, with co-driver Russ Hughes, achieved the win they have been striving for with an overall win for Mitsubishi, and big boost to the teams drivers and co-drivers championship points, and the first overall win for an FIA Group N car in the United States. Quotes: Karl Scheible: "There was always someone there to keep us honest. Eaton, Lahm and Plsek really pushed us the entire night. A very satisfying day, and a great comeback from Oregon Trail. Our Mitsubishi was solid the entire weekend. Lance [Smith, Vermont Sports Car] and the guys did a great job with the prep. A great event." Peter Lahm: "What a run back and forth between us! We had some road points to deal with, so we really ran hard at the end to be sure. To finish Rim twice in a row, both times on the podium, is twice the honor." Eric Eaton: "After the tough day at Oregon Trail, we knew our day was going to come - it had too. When I found out we were in 2nd overall, I really thought , wow, this is it. That flat on SS12 did us in though. Maybe we should have pressed on. But really, we did ok. I know now we can run there. A good day." Patrick Richard: (#162 Subaru) "Today was a good day. I'm finding that I'm better on day two of these events, and even though we had two punctures and a bent A-arm today, we were able to keep pace. I got a case of Kodak Courage when I saw the Speedvision helicopter, and really launched the Impreza on a jump - that landing though was our 2nd puncture, which probably cost us the podium. I hope the video is good!" Noel Lawler: (#1 Hyundai, retired Day 1) "I'll tell you this much: Stage 1 and 2 at Susquehannock Trail [round #4 in June] is going to be an F1 race, that's for sure."
