HOW A PRO RALLY WORKS:

Each team consists of a driver and a co-driver (or navigator), and the exact course is kept
secret until just before the event - different from World Rally, where practice and course
notes are allowed). The cars start at one-minute intervals and race against the clock over 11
stages (competition course consisting of closed public roads) which range in length from
four to 25 miles. Most of the rallies include night stages, making it necessary for competitors
to adjust their driving style. Speeds of more than 120 miles-per-hour could be reached on
long straight-aways, with the team going the fastest over the competition course winning
the rally.

Press Notes #1
Doo Wop III & IV PRO Rally Aberdeen, Washington
Round #2 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
March 12, 1994 - 9:00 AM (Pacific Standard)

1. Although the Doo Wop rallies - named after the former
Doo Wop Diner which hosted the Olympia area national
rallies for years - are traditional events in Washington
State, this is the first time that national points will
be awarded. For the divisional (or local and regional)
drivers, Saturday and Sunday's events are two separate
rallies, while the national drivers will earn their
points from combined totals of the two days' stages.

2. The weather is perfect for the weekend event - non of the
usual Northwest rain is scheduled and the starting
temperature should be in the low 60s F.

3. The national drivers will earn 60 percent of the points
usually garnered for a full national event, and there
will be no starter points awarded. Thus, first place
(usually 20 points) will earn 12 points; second place
(usually 15 points) is 9, etc.

4. The top two cars in the 60 percent national run on the
East Coast in February - the Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker
Audi Quattro and the Carl Merrill/Jon Wickens Ford Escort
Cosworth - will not be at this event, but will return to
the Northwest next month for the Wild West PRO Rally in
Olympia - the next event on the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally
    tour.

5. The other top contenders for the overall championship -
both of whom did not make it to last months' South
Carolina event - are the favorites to win the Doo Wop
event this weekend. The Valvoline Porsche Carrera 4, an
    all-wheel-drive Porsche 911 based on Porsche's all-out
959 world rally model, will be driven by filmmaker Jeff
Zwart and world rally co-driver Tony Sircombe. The other
top contender is Henry Joy, from Wilmette, IL, with
veteran co-driver Jimmy Brandt, is a 350 HP Mitsubishi
Eclipse AWD. Both Zwart and Joy finished in the top
three in several events last year, although both are
looking for their first victory in their present racers.

6. Some Formula Super Vee fans may remember the name Peter
Moodie, a young Jamaican driver in the Bill Scott Racing
stable in 1974 and 1975. Moodie went back to Jamaica
after his short formula stint and became a national
champion rally driver. This will be his second
appearance in a U.S. rally - he finished fourth in the
Coachman Stages event in Olympia in 1992 in a Hyundai.
This year, he will drive an ex-Rod Millen Mazda 323GTX.
Moodie will be running in the Group A class which -
unlike the Open class of the competitors above - requires
certain stock body and engine rules to apply.

7. Rhys Millen, son of former rally champion Rod Millen and
relatively new to the national PRO Rally scene, will be
running his second rally in his new Toyota All-Trac. The
car debuted last season at the Prescott Forest Rally, put
an off-road excursion and resulting mechanical problems
put him out of the event. Millen is in the Production GT
class, which allows relatively few engine modifications,
    but permits suspension work.

8. Greg Lund, from Bellevue, Washington, has made the
necessary modifications to convert his car from an Open
class vehicle to Group A, although his Mazda 323GTX does
not have to fancy Group A engine or transmission that the
    world rally cars use.

9. The new Group 2 class, two-wheel drive cars with normally
aspirated, small displacement engines under 2400 cc with
modifications allowed, seems to be a hit for '94 if the
first two rallies are any indication. There should be a
terrific Group 2 battle this weekend between the fast
Saab 900 of Sam Bryan and Mark Simons - always in the top
ten at national rallies - and veteran Mike Whitman of
Farmington, NM, is his fast and reliable Datsun 510.

10. The rally will run 66 miles through the new forest roads
in the Hoquiam area on Saturday, and 35 miles through the
more familiar Capitol Forest on Sunday.

Press Notes #2
Doo Wop III & IV PRO Rally Aberdeen, Washington
Round #2 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
March 12, 1994 - 10:00 PM (Pacific Standard)

11. The first day of rallying is over through the forests
near Hoquiam, Washington, marking the half-way point in
the national event and the finish of Doo Wop PRO Rally
III. The leader at the end of seven stages is the
Porsche Carrera 4 of Jeff Zwart and Tony Sircombe.
Zwart, who ran very well in the car's debut in these
parts a year ago, made very few mistakes Saturday while
striking out to a one minute, 51-second lead over the
local Mazda 323GTX team of Dale Beard and Richard
Simmons. Rhys Millen/Chris Griffen in a Toyota All-Trac
are third by another minute, followed by the 1993
Divisional PRO Rally champs Mike Whitman and Kevin
    Linville in their Datsun 510.

12. In the divisional Doo Wop III rally, Beard was the clear
winner, followed by Whiteman and the Saab 900 team of Sam
    Bryan/Rick Delamare.

13. For the national event, the class leaders are
Zwart/Sircombe (Overall and Open Class); Beard/Simmons
(Production GT); Whitman/Linville (Group 2); and Rick
Davis/Ben Greisler in a BMW M-3 (Group A). There are no
Production class or Truck class entries.

As these are informational results only, we have one
glitch we have to straighten out in the morning. On the
entry list, Beard/Simmons are entered in both the
national (Production GT) and divisional rally, but on the
results sheet, they are listed only as divisional
competitors. If they are indeed not entered in the
national, then Rhys Millen leads Production GT.

14. First, to answer some of the most anticipated questions:

--Peter Moodie, the Jamaican national champion rallyist
whose ex-Millen Group A Mazda 323GTX was expected to
compete for a high overall position, was a DNF with
      gearbox problems.

--Henry Joy/Jimmy Brandt, also looking to compete for the
top spot overall in their Mitsubishi Eclipse,
overcooked it on the first stage and spun off the
course, losing several minutes to the leaders. He is
currently in sixth place overall behind Bryan.

--The good battle between Group 2 combatants
      Whitman/Linville, Bryan/Delamare, Ostlund/Baker
(Saab 99) and Thompson/Jackson (Volvo 142E) has lived
up to its billing so far, with all four running in the
top 10 and only about two minutes separating the group.
Thompson ended up with a much lower score, however,
after garnering penalty points for missing a check-in
time after a service after swapping a transmission.

--Another local favorite, Greg and Lynn Lund, were unable
to start the event in their revamped Group A Mazda as
their car would not run. A round trip to Tacoma to
replace a multitude of computer parts, and several
hours of pondering, and it looks like they will give
the Doo Wop IV divisional a shot on Sunday.

15. Joel Wright, from Burien, Wash., in a Mazda RX-3 with his
wife and co-driver Rosemary Tindall, suffered a bad crash
when their car hit a tree head-on during the early part
of the event. Wright was shaken up, but otherwise
unhurt. Ms. Tindall was airlifted to Harborview Hospital
in Seattle, where she is listed in critical condition.

16. The Bob Wakehouse/Todd Terp Fiat is also out of the
event, the victim of a multi-rollover incident. Both
    drivers were okay.

17. Other DNFs after day #1 (remember, these divisional
drivers listed below can come back and enter tomorrow's
event as it is a new divisional rally):

    --Gary Mitchell/Gary Jurss - BMW 2002
    --Tim Paterson/Penny Paterson - Mazda 323GTX

Press Notes #3
Doo Wop III & IV PRO Rally Aberdeen, Washington
Round #2 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
March 13, 1994 - 9:30 AM (Pacific Standard)

18. Our results as posted last night are correct as Dale
Beard/Richard Simmons are indeed second overall in
the national event and first in Production GT, as well
as the winner of the Doo Wop III divisional event
    Saturday.

19. A chat with Henry Joy this morning revealed that only
part of his several minute deficit to the leaders
resulted from his car's failure to restart after his
stage #1 spin. Also, Joy's Mitsubishi is fitted with a
new electronic fuel management program, and it had some
teething problems yesterday in its first run at speed.

Joy also spent the winter ice racing with his previous
mount, a Mazda 323GTX. He thinks that the different
habits learned over the winter actually hurt his driving
technique yesterday rather than helped it.

A quick phone call to Ojibwe organizers and veteran ice
racers Bruce Weiman and Beryl Ann Burton confirmed that
throwing the back end out at every opportunity and
bouncing off the snow drifts to glide your car around the
course are ice racing habits that could hurt your
progress in the forest. By the way, today - Sunday - is
    Bruce's birthday.

20. No further word in co-driver Rosemary Tindall, who is in
Harborview Hospital in Seattle in critical condition from
injuries suffered in Saturday's rally action after the
car driven by husband Joel Wright hit a tree.

21. Rick Davis/Ben Greisler's BMW M-3 might be the prettiest
car on the circuit, and, although considerably slower
than the leaders, is on his way to his second top Group A
finish. Davis, who ran a legendary "splatter paint" BMW
2002 for several years on the East Coast, hopes to
campaign his car at most of the national events.

22. Mike Whitman/Kevin Linville, the defending national
Champions for the divisional PRO Rally class, are only
four seconds behind Rhys Millen's third-place Toyota All-
Trac in a much less sophisticated Datsun 510. Whitman,
one of the most talented drivers on the circuit, could
contend for an overall victory if a couple of the leaders
    falter.

23. Today's rally runs through the Capitol Forest - very
familiar territory for the Northwest-based rally drivers.

24. Rhys Millen's terrific run yesterday - his best ever in
his young career - shows the importance of an experienced
co-driver. Chris Griffen, who usually co-drivers for
brother Jeff in a fast Volvo 142 in Southern California
events, has helped the younger Millen control his driving
    style.

25. Of yesterday's six DNF's (24 of 30 starters completed
their run on Saturday), two will start the divisional
today. The Jamaican team of Peter Moodie/Michael Fenwell
has rebuilt the transmission in their Mazda 323GTX, and,
although they will not be eligible for national points,
will run the Doo Wop IV event. Also, the divisional team
of Gary Michael/Gary Jurss have their BMW 2002 ready to
    run this morning.

The refurbished and upgrade Group A Mazda 323GTX of Greg
and Lynn Lund - although running better than it was when
it could not make the start yesterday - is not running
well enough to answer the bell this morning.

26. Two usual fixtures at these Northwest events - Grant
Whiting and Rick Beson - are absent from the field this
weekend because they are building new cars that are not
ready yet. Whiting, who usually has organizer Ray
    Damitio as a co-driver, is building a Toyota All-Trac,
while Beson is constructing a new Mazda 323GTX 4-door.

By the way, Damitio's wife Janice, an improving driver in
her own right, is currently 11th overall and third in the
national Open class after yesterday's action in a Datsun
    510 with co-driver Monty Horn.

27. We just received word that the Doo Wop PRO Rally has come
to an end, and Jeff Zwart and Tony Sircombe have given
Porsche its first U.S. rally win since 1977, when John
    Buffum won a rally is a 2.7 liter Porsche 911. Zwart's
Porsche Carrera 4 finished as high as second a season
ago, but was unable to score an overall win in its first
season of competition. The car was built and is
maintained by Millen Motorsports. We hope to have
    additional details shortly.

28. We just spoke to the intensive care unit at Harborview
Hospital in Seattle, and co-driver Rosemary Tindall
remains in critical condition (Sunday - 6:00 PM Pacific
    time).

Round #2 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series

29. The co-favorite in the national class for this rally
didn't have a happy ending to his weekend as the Henry
Joy/Jimmy Brandt Mitsubishi Eclipse, pushed back to 6th
place yesterday because of a spin, blew its engine today
and did not finish. Joy was having trouble with the new
fuel management system on the car, and a quick diagnosis
indicates that its failure might have resulted in the
    blown motor.

30. More details on the finish:

The top four finishers overall were exactly the same as

31. Class winners included:

Zwart/Sircombe, Porsche Carrera 4 - Overall and Open Class
Beard/Simmons, Mazda 323GTX, Doo Wop IV Divisional winner
and Production GT class national winner
    Whitman/Linville, Datsun 510, Group 2 winner
    Davis/Greisler, BMW M-3, Group A winner
(no Production class or Rally Trucks entered)

32. Some noteworthy DNF's:

--Peter Moodie/Michael Fenwell, who broke a transmission
yesterday in their Mazda 323GTX which put them out on
Saturday, ran off the road today on stage #3 and got stuck in
      a ditch - a DNF.

--John Sparks/Don Schroeder Toyota Corolla rolled their car
early in the day - another DNF.

33. Janice Damitio finished second in the Open class in her
first national rally in her Datsun 510, and became the second
woman to score significant points early in the season. At the
Sand Hills-Sand Blast event in South Carolina last month,
Kerry Voll won the Rally Truck class - a points lead she still
holds as there were no trucks entered this weekend.

34. A correction on press note #26 - Rick Beson is building a
new Mazda Protoge 1.8-liter turbo which will be ready for the
Wild West event in Olympia, Washington next month - not a
    new Mazda 323GTX as reported.

Final scores and complete results should follow shortly.

Doo Wop III & IV PRO Rally Aberdeen, Washington
Round #2 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
March 14, 1994 - 12:01 AM (Pacific Standard)

35. The Group 2 battle didn't finish with as much excitement as
it started out with on Saturday, as Mike Whitman ended up besting
Goran Oslund by more than two minutes. The Saab of Sam Bryan -
also in contention of Saturday - fell off the pace when Bryan broke a
throttle cable and was stuck for six minutes before nursing the car
to a service area using a wire from the intercom system. Erik
     Thompson's Volvo was a DNF.

36. Further info on Henry Joy's DNF. After making adjustments to the fuel
management program on Saturday, they couldn't get the car started on
Sunday. They removed the valve cover before the start of the Sunday
action only to find bent valves.

37. After two events (both 60 percent nationals), the points look
     something like this:

      Overall: Paul Choiniere 12
               Jeff Zwart 12
               Dale Beard 9

ZWART/SIRCOMBE GIVE PORSCHE FIRST U.S. RALLY VICTORY IN

TWO DECADES; OTHER TOP RACERS DNF ON FAST WASHINGTON ROADS

OLYMPIA, WASH. -- March 13 -- For the first time since PRO

Rally guru John Buffum won an event in 1977 in a 2.7-liter

Porsche 911, the German carmaker can claim victory in a U.S.

 PRO Rally event.

Jeff Zwart, from Aspen, Colorado, with world rally co-driver

Tony Sircombe, from Newport Beach, Calif., drove their

Porsche Carrera 4 to a one minute, 31-seccond win at the Doo

Wop PRO Rally here, round #2 of the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally

 Series.

Zwart, who finished as high as second last season, drove a

flawless event this weekend, taking advantage of the absence

of his East Coast rivals - the Audi S-2 of Paul Choiniere and

the Ford Escort Cosworth of Carl Merrill. Last month,

Choiniere and Merrill finished one-two in South Carolina when

Zwart did not make it to the event.

The other pre-event favorite, Henry Joy, from Wilmette, IL,

and his co-driver Jimmy Brandt, were sixth after Saturday's

stages because of a spin, and then blew their engine on

Sunday. The Jamaican entry of Peter Moodie/Michael Fenwell

broke a transmission in their Mazda 323GTX yesterday, and

crashed today - also a DNF.

Other class winners included Dale Beard/Richard Simmons from

Elma, Wash., in a Mazda 323GTX (first in Production GT); Mike

Whitman/Kenvin Linville, from Farmington, MN, in a Datsun 510

(first in Group 2); and Rick Davis/Ben Greisler, from West

Chester, Penn., in a BMW M-3 (first in Group A).
