Round #8 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
October 23-24, 1998
Press Notes #1 - 10/21/98 - 11:30 PM
1. Welcome to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the 5th running of the
D&N Bank Lake Superior PRO Rally (the 25th running of a PRO Rally in
the Upper Peninsula, and the 51st running of some sort of rally event
(Press on Regardless, Marquette 1000, etc.). The weather, which has
brought snow and sleet to this event in the past, promises to be
seasonably cool, but not cold, with highs in the mid-'50s and lows in
the high '30s F, but little or no precipitation forecast. The route is
contained in an area 75 miles south and 50 miles north of Houghton,
Michigan, which includes land in the Ottawa National Forest; Houghton,
Ontonagon, Iron and Keweenaw Counties. The national event has a total
of 450 miles (143 stage, 307 transit). The Ottawa Divisional on Friday
is 277 miles (98 stage miles, 179 transit), and the Keweenaw Challenge
Divisional on Saturday is 174 miles (45 stage, 129 transit). Road
surfaces are rough, smooth, straight, twisty, sand, gravel & hard
packed dirt.
2. This is also the last event of the season for the 1998 Michelin PRO
Rally Championship - the first time the season has ended in Houghton in
more than 10 years. Several years ago, the SCCA PRO Rally Board
decided to vary the schedule so that each section of the country would
get to host a final awards banquet. The season ended in Shelton,
Washington, in 1996; Rumford, Maine, in 1997; and here in '98. We will
review the championship points chase by class shortly, but all eyes
will be focused on the overall championship, where David Summerbell, of
Kingston, Jamaica, only needs to finish sixth or better to unseat Paul
Choiniere, from Shelburne, Vermont, as the perennial PRO Rally
champion. Choiniere has won the drivers' title since 1992, and must
win or finish second in his Hyundai Tiburon to have any chance for his
seventh straight championship.
3. For those who follow the series on TV, here is the list of which events
are running when on ESPN2 (all times listed are Eastern):
Ojibwe Forests Rally - Tuesday, October 27, 6:30 PM
Wednesday, October 28, 5:00 AM
Prescott Forest Rally - Sunday, November 15, 7:30 PM
Thursday, November 19 3:30 AM
D&N Bank Lake Superior Rally - Sunday, November 29 - 7:30 PM
4. A late call from Eric Marcus, owner of the Dominos Pizza PGT Mitsubishi
Eclipse, let the organizer know that their service vehicle has broken
down in Ohio, and will not make it to the event. Driver Cal Landau,
with Marcus as his co-driver, won the Production class national title
in 1991, and the Production GT championship in 1996. In Production GT,
the '97 champions Steve Gingras/Bill Westrick will try to overcome a
one point deficit in their Eagle Talon against the Lee Shadbolt/Paul
Eklund Subaru Impreza. Whoever can finish in front of the other will
win the '98 class title.

The Auto Value Keweenaw Challenge Divisional PRO Rally
Round #8 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
October 23-24, 1998
Press Notes #2 - 10/22/98 - 6:00 PM
5. Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker will have an uphill battle to capture their
seventh straight national title. After their rear suspension
problems, they managed to scratch their way back to 13th overall in
their Hyundai Tiburon two weeks ago in Prescott, AZ, but the David
Summerbell/Michael Fennell Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV scored 17 big
points to take a 15-point lead going into the last event. With
neither driver having to drop points, Summerbell can clinch the
championship by finishing 6th or higher, no matter where Choiniere
finishes. Conversely, even if Summerbell DNF's, he wins the title if
Choiniere finishes any lower that second. The overall co-driver
points are much closer, with Becker leading Fennell by only five
points.
6. With the Noel Lawler Hyundai Elantra victory in Prescott, Hyundai
clinches the overall manufacturers championship - the Korean marques
third straight win.
7. In Production, Trevor Donison/John Allen in the Plymouth Neon finished
second in class in Prescott to take an 83 - 66 points lead over the
Honda Civic of Jay Kowalik/Scott Embree. Embree has already clinched
the co-drivers national title, but Kowalik will have to win the Lake
Superior PRO Rally if Donison finishes here in the UP. In order to
help Kowalik, teammate Bryan Hourt has revamped his suspension to run
his Honda Civic in Production instead of Group 2 to try to put more
possible places between Kowalik and Donison.
8. The Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes Toyota Supra twin turbo Group 5 car has a
terrific maiden season, including three wins and a national
championship. With a good showing this weekend, Ralph and Joe will
try to help Toyota win the manufacturers title. Right now, Toyota has
a 13-point lead on Mazda, with both the Mike Hurst/Rob Bohn and the
Craig Kazmierczak/Diane Sargent Mazda RX-7s ready to help the rotary
cause if Ralph falters. Added to the mix is the Henry/Cindy
Krolikowski Dodge Shadow - the 1996 Group 5 champs - ready to finish
in the top three in class.
9. 22 cars participated in the press stage at Keweenaw Research Center
test tracks - part of the Michigan Tech University auto tech program.
As usual, the press stage produced news which affects the upcoming
event. The David Summerbell/Michael Fennell, with wife Heather
Summerbell in the navigator seat for the first time for a ride, lost
the engine (threw a rod) in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV.
With the championship at stake, several people offered David their car
to drive for the event, but it seems that he will be driving the Henry
Joy Mitsubishi Lancer Evo II. The T.A.D. Motorsports team is
evaluating its options and opportunities, and we should have news in
the morning.

The Auto Value Keweenaw Challenge Divisional PRO Rally
Round #8 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
October 23-24, 1998
Press Notes #3 - 10/23/98 - 2:00 PM
10. For those who are following the rally details on-line, there will be
gaps in the submissions as we cover the event in the field. Our last
set of notes today - Friday - will probably come in the early
afternoon as we will be going into the field for the evening stages.
We will file Friday standings and stories very early Saturday
morning. On Saturday, we will file in the morning, and then again in
the late afternoon as the rally comes to a close. There will
probably be a quick results story by 6:00 PM, with the final results
and details coming either very late Saturday night - after the final
awards banquet - or early Sunday morning. If there is a need of more
up-to-date information, you can call Andy Schupack on the cell phone
(917) 864-8767 anytime during the event.
11. WOLV-FM, 97.7 FM on the dial ("The Wolf FM") will have hourly updates
on the rally once the event begins. The updates will run at :35
minutes past the hour while the event is running.
12. Auto Value Parts Stores will be sponsoring the rally's only tailgate
party Saturday at the start of the Delaware Mine stage, where the
rally cars will be going by at 10:51 AM and 2:17 PM. Auto Value will
be serving free hot dogs and soda for all starting at 11:00 AM.
13. The speculation that David Summerbell would try to find another car
to compete in today came true as good guy Henry Joy has given David
his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution II to run for the title. David will
also take Henry's co-driver - and David's regular co-driver, Michael
Fennell, to sit in the navigator's seat. Because the both Summerbell
and Joy had to withdraw their cars, and then Summerbell had to re-
enter as a late arrival, David is bumped to the back of his seed
position. In reality, however, he only loses two places as, with the
withdrawal of both cars, Summerbell's new entry will start 4th, right
behind Noel Lawler.
14. Chris Griffin, who was originally scheduled to co-drive with
Summerbell, will not have his navigator talents wasted as he will
help Woodner Cup hopeful Bill Malik in the Group 2 Volvo 240.
Malik's regular co-driver, Christian Edstrom, is here, but has taken
sick. Right now, Malik is trying to catch Ralph Kosmides, who has a
16-point lead for the overall 2WD cup.
15. The Lee Shadbolt/Paul Eklund Subaru Impreza, which is leading the
Production GT championship by a single point, will not make it to
this event because of the lack of vacation time and budget. Driver
Shadbolt could have come, but co-driver Eklund and service crew would
not have been available. This means, with the two points he will
garner from this afternoon's start, that Steve Gingras will clinch
his second PGT title in as many years with his Eagle Talon. Lynn
Dillon, who is co-driving for Arthur Odero-Jowi, and Eric Carlson,
who is co-driving for Chris Czyzio, both have an outside chance to
catch Eklund for the co-drivers title, but both co-drivers would have
to win the event.

Round #8 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
October 23-24, 1998
Press Notes #4 - 10/24/98 - 2:00 AM
16. 48 cars left the Dee Stadium hockey rink in Houghton to start the 1998
D&N Bank Lake Superior PRO Rally. Three additional divisional cars
have entered Saturday's divisional, for a total of 51 cars.
17. It didn't take long for attrition to kick in, as the Arthur Odero-
Jowi/Lynn Dillon Mitsubishi Eclipse broke its transmission on the way
to stage #1. The team will try to affect repairs overnight and enter
the divisional on Saturday.
18. The Tom Ottey/Pam McGarvey Mazda 323GTX, which had turbo problems
during the press stage, broke an oil line on stage #1 and had a small
engine fire, causing a DNF.
19. Also, on stage #1, the Craig Kazmierczak/Diane Sargent Mazda RX-7 went
off the road and bent the front suspension, causing a DNF.
20. The Garen Shrader/Doc Shrader Ford Sierra Cosworth also didn't survive
the first stage, sliding off the road and hitting a tree - busting a
wheel and unable to continue.
21. Right after the Shraders went out, the Ken Steward/Jim Dale Chevy S-10
pickup lost its engine - a DNF.
22. Even those who are still running after the first night were having
their problems with the fast course:
--The Mike Whitman/Paula Gibeault Ford Sierra Cosworth lost a turbo
hose, suffered through an engine miss, and some brake problems
before changing to Performance Friction 83 pads.
--The Steve Gingras/Bill Westrick Eagle Talon had two flats and broke
both right-side wheels hitting a rock, lost the brakes because of a
brake line leak (solved with a thumb tack), and hit a deer.
23. The Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes Toyota Supra twin turbo clinched the Jon
Woodner Cup for overall 2WD finishers when the Bill Malik/Chris
Griffin Volvo 240 lost its clutch and DNFed. Kosmides is staying in
the event to try to clinch the manufacturers title for Toyota.
24. David Summerbell has clinched the national drivers championship as the
Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker Hyundai Tiburon is a DNF after a wire
pulled out of the alternator on stage #5. Paul lost his auxiliary
lights, but kept the car going for two more stages before he was
forced to quit. The Noel Lawler/Charles Bradley Hyundai Elantra
currently leads the Summerbell/Fennell Mitsubishi Lancer Evo II by 11
second, and must finish if Hyundai is to win the manufacturers title.
On the other hand, Summerbell must finish if Fennell is to overtake
JeFF Becker for the co-driver title.

Round #8 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
October 23-24, 1998
Press Notes #10 - 10/25/98 - 9:00 AM
25. The D&N Bank Lake Superior PRO Rally is now over, and the
Michelin PRO Rally Championship has a new national titleholder as
Jamaican David Summerbell and co-driver Michael Fennell capped
off a won both a national championship and the event here in the
Upper Peninsula in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution II.
Summerbell/Fennell nipped the Hyundai Elantra team of Noel
Lawler/Charles Bradley by 1:02 to clinch their second win of the
season, and their first overall national championship.
Summerbell, with co-driver Chris Griffin, won his other rally at
Rim of the World in California in May. For Fennell, it was his
second national championship as he co-drove with Jamaican Peter
Moodie to the Group A championship in 1994.
For the John Buffum Libra Racing Hyundai team, it was a
bittersweet weekend. The disappointment of the Paul
Choiniere/Jeff Becker DNF with an alternator problem in their
Hyundai Tiburon was tempered by the fine Lawler/Bradley
performance and the winning of the manufacturers trophy for
Hyundai. With a 15-point deficit in the standings coming into
the event, Choiniere really lost his chance for a seventh
straight title with his suspension problems in Prescott and
subsequent 12th place finish earlier this month. Lawler and
Bradley, with their second win of the season, also elevated
themselves to the second position overall for the season points.
Finishing third overall - their fifth top five finish this year -
was the Ford Sierra Cosworth of Mike Whitman/Paula Gibeault.
Whitman survived a variety of problems during the weekend, not
the least of which was a "foot locker-sized" rock which crunched
the left front (co-driver side on the right hand drive Sierra) of
the car. Whitman was 6-1/2 minutes behind Lawler.
Scoring the best national PRO Rally overall finish for a woman
since Shannon Millen's fourth place at Rim of the World in 1991,
Gail Truess and co-driver Pattie Hughes were Production GT
winners and fourth overall in their Paul Truess-built Mazda
323GTX. Ms. Truess, a professional driving instructor and a
member of the PPG CART Pace Car Team, cracked the top ten for the
first time last August at Ojibwe, but this was by far her best
PRO Rally finish. Ms. Hughes, whose father Scott - a former
rallyist - was here to watch her perform this weekend, is also an
SCCA IT racer.
Other class winners included the Mark Utecht/Brenda Corneliusen
Dodge Omni GLH turbo (Group 5); the Wayne Prochaska/Annette
Prochaska VW Golf (Group 2); and the Evan Moen/Ron Moen Plymouth
Neon ACR (Production).

Thank You From The Carl Merrill Family
(read to the Michelin PRO Rally Championship awards banquet
audience on October 24 in Houghton, Michigan, by Henry Joy)
We wanted to write this note to the "Rally Circuit" to
personally thank you all for all the love and support you
have shown our family over the past three weeks. Your words
of deep-felt sympathy and stories about Carl have been
comforting, heart-warming, and sometimes quite humorous. We
knew Carl loved to race, but, quite honestly, we have been
blown away by the number of cards, flowers and donations made
to the Carl Merrill Children's Foundation by the rally
community.
Carl's love and passion for rally racing was beyond words.
Even though he hated like hell to lose to any of you, the
relationships and camaraderie he had with you were more
important than winning (even though he would have never
admitted to that). This has been very apparent in reading
some of the letters and cards that you all have written over
the past couple of weeks.
A very special thanks to those who administered to Carl in
Prescott. By doing so, you made it possible for me to spend
precious time with him before he left us for good. I
appreciated the personal notes describing the play by play of
events that Friday. Trying to understand any of this has
been impossible and real difficult for all of us, but know
that we will all get through this in time. Each one of us
will have our own special Carl Merrill story; we encourage
you to share them with each other, not only today, or in the
next few weeks, but for the rest of our lives.
Thanks to those who attended the sunrise service in Ogunquit,
though Carl would have been laughing at all of us standing
out in the pouring rain. I was nice to have you there; it
meant a lot to us.
So, to all of you....drive fast; don't speed between stages;
tease each other unmercifully; and have as much fun at life
as Carl did.
Love,
Barbara Merrill

Round #8 - 1998 Michelin PRO Rally Championship
October 23-24, 1998
Press Notes #11 - 11/12/98 - 1:30 PM
26. I know that this is a full three weeks after the event, but wrap-
up activities have precluded this final page of notes - so here
we go:
--The banquet on Saturday night after the event - for both the
LSPR the season - was full of emotion for all. Emcee Henry Joy
set the tone by reading a letter from Barbara Merrill (which I
posted several days ago), and then awarded the first annual
Carl Merrill Award to Carl. Lance and WeeGee Smith, who
attended the rally weekend, accepted the award on behalf of the
family.
--As people were coming off that emotional high, Trevor Donison
was called up to accept the Production class driver's trophy,
which is named after his father Roy, who was killed testing his
rally car when Trevor was 12 years old. He told the audience
he was dreaming of this day since he was 12, and, with his eyes
raised skyward, said, "I did it, dad."
--Both John Buffum and Woodner Cup winner Ralph Kosmides
remembered Jon Woodner as an innovator and intense PRO Rally
competitor, with Buffum challenging the audience with "why do
we have to wait until people are dead to say nice things about
them?"
--The award of the overall national championship trophy was
enhanced by the participation of the entire Fennell and
Summerbell families from Jamaica. Not lost in the celebration
was the gracious handing over of the title from the Paul
Choiniere/Jeff Becker camp. As intense competitors, Choiniere
and Becker were very disappointed to not win the title again,
but showed nothing but class to the PRO Rally community and the
new champions.
27. An apology needs to go out to the Janice Damitio/Amity Trowbridge
Toyota Celica GT4 team from the Northwest. We were so excited
(as were Janice and Amity) to see Gail Truess and Pattie Hughes
finish fourth overall that we forgot that Janice and Amity had a
fourth overall finish at the Pacific Forests event in 1996. it
looks like "Girls Kick Butt" is catching.
28. Some additional detail from Replica Productions on the 1999 PRO
Rally TV package. There will be six one-half hour shows on
SPEEDVISION, with each event showing several times.
SPEEDVISION's 14.7 million households got a major boost this past
season as it secured the exclusive live rights in the U.S. for
Formula One. Advertising sponsorship packages for companies to
gain exposure on these broadcasts are a great marketing value.
Opportunities include 30-second spots, in-car cameras, in-depth
product information segments, course signage, video billboards
and other opportunities designed to strengthen brand image and
awareness. For more information, call Doug Plumer at Replica
Productions (617) 492-7444 or Kurt Spitner at (303) 779-6622.
Information on SPEEDVISION can be obtained by calling the network
at (203) 406-2500, or visiting their web sit at
<www.speedvision.com>. Besides being available on cable systems,
SPEEDVISION is also available on DirecTV and PrimeStar satellite
systems.
29. The PRO Rally Board continues to work with the Rally/Solo
Department on the marketing and exposure plan for 1999, with the
final version being posted within the next 10 days on
<www.scca.org>. The only visible change to the average
competitor at this point is the series logo, with "PRO" going
away and being replaced with ProRally. The name of the series
will now be The 1999 Michelin SCCA ProRally Championship. Still
under discussion is the name and roll of divisional rally and the
editorial emphasis of the TV coverage. Everything else, include
the classes and the assignment of competitor numbers, remain the
the same, with the $75 charge for using a season number being
dropped.
30. The plans for the public relations activities for the Michelin
PRO Rally Championship are being finalized, with a new PR
representative to be named shortly.
31. A reminder of the upcoming ESPN2 TV rally schedule:
