tight turns provide exciting visuals.

driver interviews, and results. We will fax
stories and agate Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
We have B-roll available for TV. The press room will be

HOW A PRO RALLY WORKS:
Each team consists of a driver and a co-driver (or navigator), and the exact course is kept
secret until just before the event - different from World Rally, where practice is allowed.
The cars start at one-minute intervals and race against the clock over 10 - 25 stages which
range in length from four to 25 miles. Most of the rallies include night stages, making it
necessary for competitors to adjust their driving style. Speeds of more than 120
miles-per-hour could be reached on long straight-aways, with the team achieving the fastest
combined times winning the event.
Press Notes #1
Sunriser 400 Forest Rally Chillicothe, Ohio
Round #9 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
September 16, 1994, 8:00 AM EST
1. Welcome (or more accurately, welcome back) to Chillicothe, Ohio, and
the 23rd running of the Sunriser 400 Forest Rally, round #9 of the 11
events which constitute the 1994 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series. The
Sunriser 400 Forest Rally traces its beginnings to the late 1960's,
when the event was part of the newly-formed MONY
(Michigan-Ohio-New York) Series. According to many of the veteran
drivers, the roads of the Tar Hallow and Scioto Trail State Forests
here in Southern Ohio might be the finest rally roads in the country.
The roads are twisty and hilly, but equally smooth and well-maintained,
with more than-the-usual number of paved roads than the normal PRO
Rally event.
2. The weather will be an issue this weekend, with current forecasts
calling for mostly sunny skies Friday, with the highs near 90 degrees.
Friday night (the rally starts at 7:00 PM Friday night), there is an 80
percent chance of showers and thundershowers, low in the 60s, with
showers continuing until Saturday noon. Then, we should look for
partly cloudy skies and cooler, with highs in the mid-70s. This could
cut down on the crowd - which has numbered in the thousands in past
years - at Yoctangee Park on Saturday morning, where the competitors
will run a stage right in a city park. The Yoctangee Park stage and
Saturday morning activities are sponsored by Kroger Food and Drug.
3. While there is much rally news to report here, there is also some
"off the field" activity happening, so let's get up to date.
--Greg and Lynne Lund, from Duvall, Washington, have contracted with
Rally Engineering Development (R.E.D.), and British company with a Los
Angeles office, to have a World Rally Championship-style Ford Merkur
XR4Ti Open class car built for the 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series.
The car, which claims to have between 450 and 500 horsepower, will be
prepared by R.E.D. as well. R.E.D. has prepared and serviced the top
Ford Escort Cosworths on the World Rally circuit for several years, and
is interested in similar work in the U.S.
--Henry Joy has purchased a World Rally Mitsubishi Lancer (right-hand
drive) from Europe and hopes to prepare and run the car in the '95
Australia/New Zealand Championships. He will also maintain and run his
Open-class Mitsubishi Eclipse in the U.S. and run as many SCCA/Michelin
PRO Rally events as time allow. The Lancer will be a Group A car, with
final plans contingent on the availability of the proper transmission.
--Carl Merrill is nearing completion of his Open class, tube frame pick-
up truck (450 horsepower) to run in the '95 series. Details to be
released as soon as the truck completes its first test session. Word is
that it is now a Chevy S-10, but could be a Ford Ranger, Dodge Ram 50 or
GMC pickup depending on interest from the Detroit's OEMs.
--Hyundai, which showed interest in entering a factory Elantra for one
of several drivers in 1994 (DiMarco, Choiniere, Bawden have all been
mentioned) seems to have bagged its rally plans, at least for this year.
--The Jeff Zwart/Valvoline deal to sponsor Jeff's Porsche Carrera 4,
initially slated for only five events, has been expanded to cover the
balance of the season. Zwart's success at Pike's Peak, along with his
three victories this season, were the keys. You might want to pick up
the current issue of AUTOWEEK, where Porsche has announced the
introduction of the street version of the Porsche Carrera 4.
--The Chad Dykes Group 2 Toyota, built by fellow competitor Dave Turner,
has been scheduled to debut at the last several rallies, but delays in
the engine development will most likely mean a 1995 effort instead of
any '94 events.
--A World Rally driver, along with his factory car, MIGHT come over for
the Maine Forest Rally to help promote that manufacturer's cars and to
promote World Rally to the U.S. media. We should know by October 1-
sorry, no hints.
4. As usual, yesterday's media stage, designed to be a benign event to give
local press people and VIPs rides in rally cars, turned out to be more
exciting than planned. With WCMH-TV's (Channel 4 - Columbus) Steve
Saunders aboard, Ford Escort Cosworth driver Carl Merrill scooted off
the road into a ditch - an event documented by both a cameraman and an
in-car camera. Although the car sustained little damage, the TV sports
reporter earned great respect for the sport of PRO Rally.
Other press stage reports:
--Henry Joy and crew were picking stones out of the driveshaft area
underneath their Mitsubishi Eclipse after their car had a close
encounter with a logging truck on the stage. The truck driver
had misunderstood how many cars were going to be using the road and
for how long.
--The long-awaited debut of the Vinnie Frontinan/Frank Arruda Group A
Toyota Celica Alltrac is officially underway as Vinnie gave media
rides yesterday. The car seems to be running "okay" according to
Vinnie, who will give us a more detailed report after tonights stages.
5. Selcuk Karamanoglu, the Turkish rally champion now living in Bath,
Maine, is the first SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally competitor to clinch a
class championship for 1994. With Production GT class wins at Sand
Hills, Wild West, STPR, and Ojibwe (where he finished third overall as
well), Selcuk has a 71-point lead with 3 events (total of 66 available
points) remaining. Also clinching his championship is veteran co-
driver John McArthur.

Sunriser 400 Forest Rally Chillicothe, Ohio
Round #9 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
September 16, 1994, 9:00 PM EST
6. The Sunriser 400 Forest Rally has perhaps the strongest field
ever when you look at the quality at the top of the entry list.
Everyone in the top 15 positions has a shot to finish in the top
five, with no less than seven drivers capable of winning the event
overall. Here are the top entries and their status:
--Paul Choiniere/John Buffum in their Audi Quattro S-2. Choiniere
leaders the series point standings, and could go a long way towards
his fourth overall national championship in five years and third in a
road. Choiniere's regular co-driver, Jeff Becker, is in Europe on
business, so car owner and step-father Buffum will fill in. The last
time Buffum co-drove for Choiniere at a U.S. rally, Choiniere went
off the road twice and had several mechanical problems on his way to
a third-place finish at POR (1993). This year, Paul's wins include
Sand Hills (South Carolina), Rim of the World (California), STPR
(Pennsylvania), Maine Forest Summer Rally, and Ojibwe (Minnesota).
--Jeff Zwart/Martin Headland Porsche 911 Carrera 4. Coming off a
disappointing fifth-place finish at Ojibwe, Zwart needs a top finish
to keep Choiniere in his sights for the season points title. Zwart
recently won his class at the July 4 Pike's Peak Hillclimb, and has
scored SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally wins at the Doo Woop PRO Rally in
Washington State, the Wild West PRO Rally (also in Washington), and
the Prescott Forest Rally in Arizona.
--The other two of 1994's PRO Rally "big four" have yet to taste
victory so far this season, due to mechanical failures, accidents,
and just bad luck. Carl Merrill's Ford Escort Cosworth was the
fastest racer at Wild West, but speeding on a transit stage caused
his disqualification. Henry Joy's Mitsubishi Eclipse has caught on
fire (STPR), and blown an engine during an odometer/fuel system check
(Ojibwe). Both Joy and Merrill and looking to cut into the overall
win monopoly now held by Choiniere and Zwart.
--To other fast open cars - neither series regulars but both series
veterans - Doug Shepherd/Pete Gladysz Eagle Talon and Frank
Sprongl/Dan Sprongl Audi Quattro S-2 - are threats to win if
something happens to the front-runners (or even if something
doesn't). Shepherd would have won at POR last year if it was not for
penalty points, while Sprongl won the '92 Maine Forest Rally, and
has numerous wins in his native Canada.
--Peter Moodie/Michael Fennell Mazda 323GTX. Moodie, a Jamaican Rally
Champion, has a very fast Group A car capable of winning the event
overall - a fact he proved three weeks ago at Ojibwe when he finished
fourth overall, and just ten seconds out of third. Like Henry Joy,
Moodie has had a hard-luck season, but has won stages outright during
several of the events, and could win it all at any time.
7. Here is a quick summary of the class battles:
--Despite his DNF at Ojibwe, the Rick Davis/Ben Greisler BMW M-3
continue to lead in the point standings because of the previous
success and consistent finishes. Chris Weleff/Brian Paul, whose
Toyota Celica Alltrac was in contention behind Davis, was also an
Ojibwe DNF, crashing at the same corner as Davis. Weleff needs a win
here to have any chance of catching Davis in the points race, as does
Moodie/Fennell in their Mazda. Tony Takaori/Ken Cassidy in their
right-hand drive Mitsubishi Galant - another DNF at Ojibwe on the
same corner (now known as Group A Gulch) - did not make the trip to
Ohio.
The new story is Group A is debut of the Toyota Celica Alltrac
GT4 of Vinnie Frontinan/Frank Arruda. The New England-based team
ran their new car at Pike's Peak with a stock engine, but this is the
debut of the car in full Group A trim.
--In Production GT, the fact that Selcuk Karamanoglu has clinched the
points championship did not diminish the turnout of competitive
vehicles or the competitive spirit of the drivers. This was proven
when four competitors protested his car in tech, claiming the turbo
was too big and the gearbox was illegal. His Mitsubishi Eclipse came
through the tech test with flying colors, however, and the others in
the class had to resign themselves to the fact that Selcuk is just a
very fast drivers.
Rees Harris, currently second in class in his Mazda 323GTX, has again
tapped veteran co-driver Constantine Mantopoulos as his navigator.
He and Selcuk had a terrific head-to-head battle at the Maine Forest
Summer Rally, won by Rees by 16 seconds after Selcuk had two flats on
the same stage.
Other GT competitors include the veteran Cal Landau/Eric Marcus
Mitsubishi Eclipse team, Tom Ottey/Pam McGarvey Mazda 323GTX,
Craig Sobczak/Kevin DeLoughery Mazda 323GTX, Jason Preistley/Kevin
Caffery Toyota Celica Alltrac, and the Greg Trepetin/Sonia Ivanovs
Mazda 323GTX.
--The Group 2 battle ranges on, with the Goran Ostlund/Steve Baker
Saab 99 clearly enjoying the best season of the competitive field
running the first-time class for 2WD, non-turbo cars with a
displacement of less than 2.4 liters. Although the Saab 900 of
Sam Bryan/Rob Walden and the Datsun 510 of Mike Whitman/Paula
Gibeault have both been faster on occasion, Ostlund's consistency has
netted him his current points lead.
--In Production, points leaders Dave Turner/Bill Gutzmann can clinch
the class championship with a win this weekend in their 2WD
Mitsubishi Eclipse. They might have been able to clinch that title
three weeks ago at Ojibwe, but they fell off the road after moving
out of the way of a faster car. The Tad Ohtake/Bob Martin Ford
Escort GT and Jim Anderson/Matt Chester Honda Prelude will challenge.
Turner for the class win.
--That leaves us with the Rally Truck class, for which we have no
entries for this event.
8. Tires were a topic of discussion before the rally, as the abundance
of asphalt stages meant the top teams were rethinking their usual tires
choices. The top teams all use the Michelin F41 compound rally tire
for normal gravel roads, but those tires, with their soft compound
and tight tread design, tend to heat up and wear quickly on extended
high-speed asphalt stages. Choiniere thought the team might stay on
the F41s, and he would just take it easy on the asphalt, trying not
to lose too much time and make up whatever he lost on his strength -
gravel. Merrill has an assortment of tires, was going to try to change
from gravel to asphalt tires whenever service allows. If it got wet,
some teams even had Michelin road racing rain tires for wet asphalt.
8. 38 cars took the countdown to start the Sunriser Forest Rally from the
Kroger Food and Drug in Chillicothe. More than 200 girls, mostly ages
12 - 16, mobbed the start control to get a glimpse of "Beverly Hills
90210" star Jason Priestley, who would just as soon forgo the fanfare
in exchange for concentrating on getting ready for the event.
9. Trouble started early at this event, with the first stage being narrow,
slippery and very dusty. Carl Merrill became the first DNF of the
rally less than four miles into the first stage as his Ford Escort
Cosworth got caught up in the dust, failed to negotiate a sweeping
turn, bounced off a tree and into a steep gully. Although both driver
and co-driver were unhurt, Merrill could not get back on the road, and
his event ended early. Co-driver John Bellefleur suggested that the
organizer might have to go to two minute intervals.
10. The Mike Hurst/Rob Bohn Group 2 Nissan 200-SX and the Rees
Harris/Constantine Mantopoulos Production GT Mazda 323GTX are also out
of the rally on the first stage, victims of similar off-road
runs.
P.S. - Sorry about the two #8s.

Round #9 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
September 17, 1994, 1:00 AM EST
13. Because of an accident involving rally workers and local residents,
resulting in some injuries which required the use of the local
LifeFlight helicopter, Stage #2 has been cancelled. More on the
accident as details are confirmed.
14. The bad luck for the Henry Joy/Brian Maxwell Mitsubishi Eclipse
continues, as Henry barrel-rolled the car on stage #4, finishing the
event for him and possibly destroying the car.
15. The Mike Whitman/Paula Gibeault Datsun 510 is also out of the event,
as the car hit a tree - also on stage #4.
16. Doug Shepherd/Pete Gladysz Eagle Talon, running third overall after
four stages, was only three seconds off the pace on stage #3.
17. Leaders Jeff Zwart/Martin Headland lost control of their Porsche
Carrera 4 at the flying finish of stage #4 and hit a tree, losing the
whale-tail spoiler, damaging the exhaust system, crumpling several
fenders and causing other damage. None of it was terminal, but it
remains to be seen whether Choiniere can catch Zwart before the end of
the evening now that the Valvoline Porsche has been slowed.
18. The Sprongl/Sprongl Audi lost time on stage #4 stopping to try
to help the Joy/Maxwell car when it rolled. The organizer has the
option to give them back some of the time they lost on the stop.

Press Notes #5
Sunriser 400 Forest Rally Chillicothe, Ohio
Round #9 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
September 17, 1994, 1:00 PM EST
20. Other Friday night activities:
--The Sprongl/Sprongl Audi lost several minutes when they stopped
to help the rolled Henry Joy Mitsubishi. When Joy's car stopped
rolling, it landed on its wheels, but the engine caught fire. The
Sprongls helped put out the fire, probably saving it from being
completely destroyed. As is traditional in rally circles, however,
the organizer gave them back most of the time they spent helping Joy
with his fire, so he was not penalized for stopping.
--Choiniere/Buffum and Shepherd/Gladyzs, running second and third
respectively, are both within striking distance of the lead, and
this morning's rain has wiped out all possibility for any advantage
Zwart might have had being first on the road. Besides, with Zwart's
car being banged up, and today's stages being on more familiar
gravel roads, both rally veterans figure to overtake Jeff before the
event is done. And don't forget the Sprongls, who lurk in fourth
place only three seconds behind third.
--The Scott Neff/Aaron Neff VW Dasher ran over parts of the
Joy/Maxwell car after it rolled, and a piece of metal from the
skidplate became embedded in their transmission, putting an end to
the day for the brothers from Chillicothe.
--The Ohtake/Martin Ford Escort GT, which had been leading the
Production class, rolled on stage #4. The car was not damaged that
badly, but the windshield as shattered and the roof line was bent
just enough that a replacement would not go in easily.
--The Hurst/Bohn Nissan, the Sobczak/DeLoughary Mazda, and the Harris/
Manotopolous Mazda - all DNFs on Friday night - will run the
divisional event today.
--The Turner/Gutzmann Mitsubishi Eclipse, trying to clinch the
Production class season title, finds itself in dead last among the
national cars as a result of an off-road excursion which left the
front wheels pointing in opposite directions. While the team plans
to continue, don't look for their now-poor handling car to move up
in position. The only other Production car still running, the Honda
Prelude of Jim Anderson/Matt Chester, is about four minutes ahead of
Turner after Friday's stages.
--A quick rundown of the other classes shows the following:
o Peter Moodie/Michael Fennell in their Mazda 323GTR (we have
been calling it a GTX now for the whole season, but it is
really a Familia, which is the newer model, and a GTR, which is
the rally designation) lead the new Toyota Celica Alltrac GT4
of Vinnie Frontinan/Frank Arruda by more than two minutes. Third
is the Toyota Celica Alltrac of Chris Weleff/Brian Paul, while
season points leaders Rick Davis/Ben Greisler are fourth in their
BMW M-3.
o Production GT combatants are having their usual terrific battle,
and as has been the case all season, that battle includes the
Mitsubishi Eclipse of Selcuk Karamanoglu/John McArthur. The pair
has already clinched the season championship, and they have an
11-second lead of the fastest local competitors, Tom Ottey/Pam
McGarvey of Columbus, Ohio, in a Mazda 323GTX. The Cal
Landau/Eric Marcus Eclipse is third, two minutes behind, while
the Jason Priestley/Kevin Caffery Toyota Celica Alltrac is a
strong fourth, only one minute behind Landau.
o With the Whitman/Gibeault Datsun of the rally, the Group 2
battle will again focus on the Saabs, with the Sam Bryan/Rob
Walden Saab 900 a scant seven seconds ahead of rival Goran
Ostlund/Steve Baker in a Saab 99. The Karl Scheible/Russ Hughes
VW GTI is third, two minutes back, with the Datsun PL-510 of Pete
Lahm/Jimmy Brandt 30 seconds behind the GTI.
21. Today's rally activity started with a pavement stage through Yoctangee
Park, sponsored by the Kroger Food and Drug store here in Chillicothe.
The stage ran in reverse order (divisional cars first), and took place
during the steady rains which hit Chillicothe this morning. The 2.92
mile stage took everyone by surprise with its large yump only a couple
of hundred feet from the start of the stage. The gathered crowd and
crew members alike held their breath as cars flew into the air,
landing on their skid plates, front bumpers, exhaust pipes, etc. A
few cars, like the already banged-up Porsche of leaders Jeff
Zwart/Martin Headland, added to the excitement by hitting the haybales
which marked off the course. There were no DNFs from the stage, but
look for competitors to talk about this one for a while.
The "prince of the pavement" was Paul Choiniere, who recorded the only
sub-three-minute time, with Peter Moodie and Frank Sprongl tied for
second, four seconds behind.
22. The Sunriser 400 Forest Rally has now completed three stages on its
final day, and the Paul Choiniere/John Buffum Audi Quattro S-2 has
reclaimed the lead from the Jeff Zwart/Martin Headland Porsche 911
Carrera 4 - a 15 second margin. The Sprongl/Sprongl Audi is third,
one minute back, and the Shepherd/Gladysz Eagle Talon is just six
seconds behind the Canadians. Peter Moodie is fifth overall and first
in Group A, 30 seconds behind Doug, while Karamanoglu leads Production
GT and is sixth overall, 30 seconds ahead of class rival Tom Ottey.
Pat Ayer/Diane Houseal, in the ex-Paul Choiniere Audi Quattro, is
eighth, while the Frontinan/Arruda Celica and the Landau/Marcus
Mitsubishi round out the top ten.
23. The only DNF so far today is the Group 2 VW GTI of Dick Casey/Martin
Depot - we don't have a reason as of now.

Round #9 - SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series
September 17, 1994, 10:00 PM EST
24. The 23rd running of the Sunriser 400 Forest Rally is now
history, and Audi Quattro S-2 of Paul Choiniere and co-driver
John Buffum has scored a convincing three-minute (approx. - scores
are not out yet) win over the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 of Jeff Zwart and
Martin Headland. Peter Moodie/Michael Fennell were third in their
Mazda 323GTR (and winners in Group A). Selcuk Karamanoglu/John
McArthur added to their already-championship-clinching point total by
winning Production GT and finishing fourth overall, while the Eagle
Talon of Doug Shepherd/Pete Gladysz was fifth. Other class winners
included Goran Ostlund/Steve Baker in a Saab 99 (clinched the Group 2
championship); Jim Anderson/Matt Chester in a Honda Prelude VTECH
(Production - Dave Turner/Bill Gutzmann finished second and still lead
the class, but did not clinch).
More later as soon as we have results.
25. The Audi Quattro S-2 of Frank Sprongl/Dan Sprongl would have finished
second overall, but a wrong turn on a stage (onto pavement instead of
gravel) resulted in four minutes of penalty points. As Frank put it,
"the car had a good day; we had a bad day in the car."
26. Both Mazda 323GTX national competitors who DNFed yesterday and entered
the divisional today DNFed again. The Rees Harris/Constantine
Mantopoulos car crashed, while the Craig Sobczak/Kevin DeLoughary
entry lost its clutch.
27. The ex-Paul Choiniere Audi that was being piloted so well by Pat Ayer/
Diane Houseal also failed to finish - we'll try to find out why.
28. The VW GTI of Dick Casey/Martin Depot was victimized by a popped ball
joint incurred when the car hit hard at the park pavement stage.
29. The Sam Bryant/Rob Walden Saab 900 Group 2 car, which was battling
Goran Ostlund for the lead in the class, ran out of gas and was time-
barred.

30. The Doug Shepherd/Pete Gladysz Eagle Talon was overheating late in the
event, and that slowed him down enough to lose out on fourth place to
Selcuk Karamanoglu by only nine seconds.
31. The Pete Lahm/Jimmy Brandt Datsun PL-510, with its good 16th place
finish, would have finished even higher if Pete hadn't run the car off
the road, bending the suspension, on the last stage.
32. The Cal Landau/Eric Marcus Mitsubishi Eclipse, which has never really
run to its potential since Cal first ran this car in 1993, was
overheating during the entire event. But Landau, the 1991 Production
class national champion, perseveres to finish third in GT and ninth
overall.
33. The Gail Truess/Cindy Krolikowski Chevy Citation had a fine 14th place
finish, nosing out the BMW M-3 of Rick Davis/Ben Greisler. Davis, who
crashed heavily at the previous event in Minnesota, took a slower pace
to conserve the car and make sure he scored the points necessary to
maintain his season points lead. He currents leads Group A with
81 points, and Peter Moodie now has 60 points.

For those who have been asking, Mark Molnar is recovering well from his injuries at the
Sunriser 400 Forest Rally. Mark was riding thru Scioto Trail Forest with his brother Dave,
and co-driver George (Yorgi) Bittner, putting up sponsor banners, on Friday evening just
prior to the start of the rally, when Dave missed a turn and hit a tree stump.
Dave's car sustained termianl damage to the right front corner as the A-pilar was shoved back
into Mark's right leg. Although he broke his pelvis in serveral places, and dislocated the
hip joint, the other injuries have healed well - as have those sustained by Dave and Yorgi.
All are back to work now, except for Mark, who will be undergoing physical therapy for a
while. I sounds like hel'll be back to work in November.
If you want to drop him a note, he's sitting home watching rally video's. He lives at:
